Hi everyone,

The majority of people are far more politically aware these days,. Take the BBC’s programme Question time for instance. The audience contains a wonderfully diverse representation of the public and some very young people too. So why, at a time when public interest has probably never been higher than it is today would a government allow the destruction of the evidential material that was intended for the ongoing investigation into MPs’ expenses. John Bercow, the Speaker, faces further accusations that he presided over a fresh cover-up of MPs' expenses. Tens of thousands of pieces of paperwork appertaining to claims made prior to 2010 were shredded. Outraged members of the public wrote to Kathryn Hudson, the standards watchdog, to raise concerns about their MP’s claims only to be told there can be no investigation due to lack of evidence. Under the House of Commons' "Authorised Records Disposal Practice", overseen by Mr Bercow’s committee, records of MPs’ expenses claims are destroyed after three years. The move is necessary to comply with data protection laws, according to a Commons spokesman. However, under that same set of guidelines, the pay, discipline and sickness records of Commons staff are kept until their 100th birthday. Some people just can’t help themselves can they?
