According to Dr. Suzanne Fussell, Board Certified Family Physician and CEO of Healthwise Home Care Solutions Inc., medical homecare agencies provide community outreach programs to include free services to seniors, advocate on behalf of loved ones, and communicate with the patient’s primary physician on issues such as medication reconciliation, one of the leading causes of patient readmission. Medical home care agencies work closely with hospitals to transition the patient’s care and provide nursing, physical therapy, social services, and home health aides, all in the privacy of the patient’s home and under the supervision of a licensed medical doctor. Accredited medical home care agencies provide education for family members and/or friends while maintaining the recipient’s dignity and independence. This quality of life can be lost even in the best institutions. Medical home care also allows patients to take an active role in their care. With an increase in the elderly population among the aging baby boomers, it is important to understand the services available with insurance and Medicare. The current trend, from doctors and medical facilities, is to decrease unnecessary readmission rates to hospitals. More About Medical Home Care

Services . . . .

What’s available to our community?

According to Dr. Suzanne Fussell, Board Certified Family Physician and CEO of Healthwise Home Care Solutions Inc., medical homecare agencies provide community outreach programs to include free services to seniors, advocate on behalf of loved ones, and communicate with the patient’s primary physician on issues such as medication reconciliation, one of the leading causes of patient readmission. Two-Minute Activist and

AAUW’s Local, State, & National Focus on Public Policy

The central core of AAUW is its work on public policy issues. Without this advocacy, the AAUW wouldn’t exist. AAUW members have a unique opportunity to affect public policy in both California and nationally. Include your voice in making the changes that are long overdue in pay equity as well as other crucial issues.

Do you want to have the biggest impact you can? Do you want to be part of creating a better world for women in California and nationally? Are you tired of it taking so long for women to earn the right to the gains they should already have? Then this is perfect for you!

Sign up for the Two-Minute Activist. It’s easy. Go to AAUW.org/what-we-do/public-policy/two-minute-activist. You will receive prewritten letters, on AAUW letterhead, to send to your representatives. It will only take a click of a button! Read on for some updates on AAUW Public Policy activities at the local, state, and national levels.

Focused at the local level, equal pay is one of two, main issues. AAUW’s public policy committee is currently starting to work with both the Simi Valley and the Thousand Oaks branches to coordinate activities for Equal Pay Day, 2016. When a larger group joins forces, there is a greater impact with regard to educating the public on this issue. Activities will involve going onto the local college campuses to inform, educate, and inspire young women.

Title IX is the second, main issue at the local level. Soon the public policy committee will be contacting local schools to see if they are in compliance with federal Title IX requirements. This will ensure young girls in this community are given an equal chance from the start. If you are interested in participating in either of these projects, educating and inspiring a new generation of women, please contact [email protected] or (818) 917-9174.

At the state level, on October 6th Governor Brown signed into law the Equal Pay Act. This makes California the state with the most stringent pay equity laws. Specifically, previously most people read the law to mean that equal pay for the same position only applied to male and female workers who had the exact, same job and were employed at the same physical, plant. This law closes both those loopholes and expands the definition of equal pay to include men and women performing similar tasks. It further includes men and women who may be performing their duties in different physical plants for the same company. Additionally, the new law bars employers from setting employee wages lower than those paid to employees of the opposite sex for similar work, and it applies to employees who work at different offices for the same employer.

California is also above the national average with women making $0.84 for every $1.00! While this is a great job in closing the loopholes, let’s keep working together to close the wage gap farther.

Planned Parenthood and voter registration are the headliners at AAUW nationwide. Since September, AAUW has been sending letters to both houses of Congress opposing elimination of funding to Planned Parenthood. In these letters, AAUW is urging Representatives to oppose the Defund Planned Parenthood Act (H.R. 3134) and the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Act (H.R. 3504). Both bills would make it more difficult for women to access reproductive health care.

Voter registration has become AAUW’s second cause. Because many states are currently trying to erect barriers to voter registration, AAUW has decided to highlight some of the states which have passed laws to actually make voter registration easier!

For example, Oregon passed the nation’s first law to establish automatic voter registration. Individuals will automatically be registered when they renew their driver’s license or their state ID cards. In Pennsylvania, in August they became the 23rd state to announce an online voter registration program, making registration more convenient and accessible. And Vermont has launched the same day, voter registration program.
