On October 2, 2018, Peer SupportSpecialist Team Lead Crystal Castro andPeer and Family Support SpecialistNathaly Martinez proudly representedNAMI San Diego PeerLINKS at a resourcefair held at the Mexican Consulate in LittleItaly. This event focused on addressingthe physical health needs of the Hispaniccommunity. PeerLINKS was the onlymental health table on-site. Because of thelong standing stigma related to mentalhealth needs and treatment, this was thefirst time a mental health service providerhad been featured at a resource fair withinthe Mexican Consulate. Communitymembers eagerly engaged inconversations with Crystal and Nathalyabout improving their own mental health,or in helping to assist family and friendsthrough NAMI San Diego support groupsand classes. Bilingual Peer SupportSpecialists, Crystal and Nathaly impactedthe community by helping to reduce thestigma associated with mental illness,providing resources, and offeringmeaningful peer support.
