We've all heard about diabetes mellitus (or simply diabetes), usually in reference to how the disease isbecoming so prevalent. More than 25 million Americans have it, according to the American DiabetesAssociation but not many people know what it is and how they can avoid getting it.

The food we eat is digested into nutrients which are then absorbed by the body. Protein turns into aminoacids, fat into fatty acids, and starch (carbohydrates) into glucose. Glucose is transported by the blood tothe cells where it's used for energy. However to enter the cells, insulin is needed. Without it, the level ofglucose in the bloodstream gets too high and can damage the blood vessels, cause kidney failure, impotence, blindness, and risks for amputation.

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body still produces insulin but the cells have become resistant to it. Fora while, the body can compensate by producing more insulin but the cells become even more resistant. When the body can no longer produce enough insulin, type 2 diabetes has occurred.

The largest risk factor is being overweight. Others include age, a family history of the disease, high bloodpressure, high cholesterol and lack of exercise. Before developing Type 2, people almost always havepre-diabetes, a condition marked by a blood glucose level that's too high. There are no symptoms so thosewith pre-diabetes often don't realize they have it but if their doctors will warn them, they should listen.

Because it could take some time for pre-diabetes to turn into a full-blown case, there's an opportunity forprevention. Studies show that changes in diet, weight loss and exercise can prevent diabetes in up to 60percent of cases.

Veterans Day gives all Americans the opportunity to show appreciation to veterans for theirservice and their sacrifices. Not to be confused with Memorial Day which honors those who losttheir lives in military service, Veterans Day is a different type of celebration. It honors livingveterans of American wars. It's a day for us to honor and appreciate them.

Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to markthe end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918. In 1954, after havingbeen through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress changed the nameto Veterans Day and it became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

In 1968, the Uniform Holiday Bill was signed and was intended to ensure three-day weekends forFederal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays, including Veterans Day. Thefirst Veterans Day under the new law was observed with much confusion and it was quite apparentthat the commemoration of this day was a matter of historical and patriotic significance to manycitizens and so President Gerald R. Ford signed a public law restoring the annual observance ofVeterans Day to its original date beginning in 1978.

Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11,regardless of what day of the week on which it falls. Therestoration of the observance of Veterans Day to November 11not only preserves the historical significance of the date but alsohelps to focus attention on the important purpose of VeteransDay: A celebration to honor America's veterans for theirpatriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice

for the common good.

Greta Heinemeier

At the age of eight, Greta suddenly developed a stutter when she spoke. It affected her schoolingto an extent—before her elementary school graduation she was told that she would have been theprimary speaker for the event if it hadn’t been for her stutter. She didn’t let this stop her frombecoming involved in other activities; she loved playing sports like basketball and softball. Greta graduated from high school in 1953 and then attended Valparaiso University, a Lutherancollege in Indiana. She graduated in 1957 with a degree in social work. She met and married aLutheran minister, James. They moved to Connecticut and had two children while living there.Greta helped and taught in the church and in kindergarten classes. She recalls that when she sang, she never once stuttered! Their family then moved to Detroit, where James was a pastor. Greta remembers witnessing thecultural and social changes occurring at the time. Violence in the area sometimes necessitated thatthe church become the “grocery store” for the neighborhood, as business were afraid or unable toopen. Her husband was recommended for a job in Northern California so their family moved onceagain to the community of Foster City, in the Bay Area. Greta applied for and got a job as a socialworker in a continuing care facility in Cupertino. She absolutely loved the senior citizens she got towork for and befriend. She especially loved hearing their stories about their lives. Greta retiredafter 20 years in Cupertino. When she was 60 years old, Greta’s stuttering suddenly stopped. A close friend asked her howthat had happened, and she simply replied, “I just got tired of it!” Greta raised two children, Kristin and Tom, and has two wonderful grandsons, Peter andBenjamin. Greta enjoys sing-a-longs and entertainment here at Carlton. She also enjoys being ableto associate with so many residents and staff. The things she likes most about the community arethe food, privacy, and musical entertainment. Greta jokes that she loves the “terrible shoes” she wears! They’re 15 years old, but they’recomfortable and supportive for her peripheral neuropathy. She’s proud of how long they’ve lasted!

Greta Heinemeier was born February 19, 1935 in Anna,Illinois, a small town about 120 miles southeast of St. Louis,Missouri near the Mississippi River. Her father was aLutheran minister and held his first congregation in Anna.Greta had one brother, four years older than her, who shedescribes as “incredibly smart and a Navy man.” The family eventually moved to Evansville, Indiana, where her father continued his services to the Lutheranchurch. He unfortunately lost his ability to speak and thefamily again relocated to St. Louis, where he could work inthe headquarters for the church.

Greta models her mother’s purse. Her mom was a flapper!
