Pastor Rick’s sermons are added to our website on Sundays, after the 11 a.m. service. Go to www.fumctullahoma.com, select the “podcast” tab and then you may scroll down on that page and select the sermon you want to listen to.

The Message—Pastor Rickey Wade Two Commands, One Rule

When Jesus was asked, “What is the greatest commandment?” this is how he

answered, “The foremost is, ‘Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is one Lord;

and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all

your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The

second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is

no other commandment greater than these” (Saint Mark 12:29-31).

Usually, when Jesus was asked a question, he answered with a

question. In this case however, he is asked for one command,

and he answers with two. The first command comes from

Deuteronomy 6:4-5 while the second comes from Leviticus 19:18.

It would seem that Jesus places these two commands as equals and

that together they comprise the greatest commandment.

If we are to take this co-command of Jesus as the greatest of all, what does it say to us? The command

has two parts: love God, and love your neighbor. To love God means that we worship God, trust God,

obey God, and spend time with God (study and prayer). In other words, loving God means that we have

an ongoing and vibrant relationship with our Creator. Just as important however is our love for neighbor.

Jesus defines our neighbor in Saint Luke 10:29-37, with the parable of The Good Samaritan, showing us

how such neighborly love is made known in the world. We love our neighbor by caring for their needs:

physical, spiritual, and emotional. Loving one another requires that we invest in one another.

Since the Christian way of life is the way ordained of

God, we believe that God is reconciling the world to

himself through Christ, and we believe that Jesus has

called the Church into being to take this reconciliation

to the ends of the earth. Therefore, we must endeavor

to love God and neighbor even when it means personal

sacrifice! When we wall ourselves in as a church and

focus only or primarily on loving God, we miss the

mark. Likewise, when we spend our time helping

neighbor without acknowledging the reason or source

of that help, we miss the mark. 1 John (and James) leads

us to believe that without love for neighbor, we cannot

love God, and without love for God, we cannot truly

love our neighbor. Obviously, Jesus meant for us to take

his co-command of God and neighbor as a both-and, not

an either-or. -God bless, Pastor Rickey

This year we are combining our Veteran’s Day service and our Sunday of Service. We will have one unified service at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary, with a soup and sandwich lunch immediately following. After lunch, those who have signed up for a project will go out into the community to serve others, in honor of those who have served. The lunch is meant to be a time of fellowship for the entire congregation, not just those who signed up for a project. We will have a slideshow of everyone who has served, as well as an insert with a list of names and service information. Please submit any pictures or information to the church office via email, [email protected], by November 2nd.

November 2018 Children’s Ministry—Julie Uehlein

Summer is all but a memory and the holiday season is quickly approaching. During this very busy time, let us all pause to count our blessings

and spend time in daily prayer and devotion.

The school of the month for November is Robert E. Lee Elementary and they are running low

on Kleenex. Your child can bring these during the Sunday School hour for a trip to the prize box.

Our memorization for this month is the “Apostle’s

Creed.” Your child will be given a copy of this during Sunday School to work on at home. Those children who can recite this to me by the end of November will earn a $10 WalMart gift card.

Summer 2019 Cedar Crest Camp dates are June 23rd-28th. This would make a great Christmas

gift for your child!

Thank you for the honor of loving and serving your children. -Be blessed, Miss Julie

Thought for the Month: The Bible urges us to live a life of thanksgiving each day. Being thankful to God for all of His blessings is truly a mark of a Christian. Based on Psalm 100, a song of praise to God as our Creator, Sustainer and Redeemer, here are four biblical ways to praise and worship God. (1) "Make a joyful noise to the LORD" (Psalm 100:1). God loves to hear our praises, (2) "Serve the LORD with gladness" (Psalm 100:2). When you are serving the Lord, don't be afraid to do it with a glad heart, (3) "Come before His presence with singing" (Psalm 100:2). God calls us to come into His presence privately each day and together in corporate worship, and (4) "Know that the LORD, He is God" (Psalm 100: 3). He wants us to know that He is God and we are not, that He is the Creator and we are His creations and that we are His sheep and He is our Shepherd. Let's make it our determination to praise, worship and get to know God more intimately.

Charlie Bair presented our Golden Circle program in October on model airplanes and

gliders. A very exciting and interesting program. The public is invited to come out and see how

these aircrafts are flown on Saturdays.

Sue Wilkins -“Walking Away the Pounds” Class

It was a cloudy and somewhat rainy day, yet we enjoyed our trip to the zoo and

lunch at Piccadilly's in October.

Our Get Fit-Tullahoma FUMC fitness program ended October 15th. Our eleven (11) teams walked 8,972.12 miles. The “Henry Center Humble Serv-

ants” was the Top Team in our church with 1,592.30 miles and Bill Caps was our Top Walker with

420.80 miles. Check our Senior Board for other stats. Thanks to everyone who participated and many thanks to those of you who cheered us on.

Our After Party will be Sunday, November 11th in conjunction with our Sunday of Service Luncheon.

Hey Everyone,

Back in October, I had a minor infection that caused

me a lot of discomfort as I was leading worship on

a Sunday morning. Specifically, it hurt when I

would flex my abs and if you know anything

about singing, your abs “should” be engaged at

all times to support your voice with breath. This

made singing pretty uncomfortable, but not impossible.

Worship was wonderful that Sunday and the scripture “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made

perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9) comes to mind. But this experience got me thinking. What do I real-

ly sacrifice when it comes to worship? Read that sentence again. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

That Sunday, I was sacrificing my personal comfort. It hurt when I sang. God used it, I have no doubt. But in

all honestly, on a week to week basis, I sacrifice very little. It usually doesn’t take a physical toll on my body

to sing to God. We have a lovely building to meet in. We have heat and air conditioning. We serve snacks and

coffee. Those things are all well and good and I enjoy those things very very much. But I was and still am con-

victed that God wants more. He is always calling to us, wooing us, drawing us to Himself. He wants us to sac-

rifice more and more. Not so that we can have nothing, but so that we can have more of Him.

When I was in high school I had a chance to go on a missions trip to Africa. There was a little old lady who I

met on the trip who would bring a little wooden box, about the size of a brick, to church with her so that she

didn’t have to sit on the floor or stand. She comes to mind when I think about what I sacrifice in order to wor-

ship God. She would travel miles on foot, sit on her little wooden brick for +3 hours on a Sunday morning

during worship, and travel home again.

This message is not to discourage you or convict you,

maybe it has, but I want you to know that the God of

all creation, wants to know you and be known by you.

He doesn’t want an hour on Sunday, he wants every

minute and every moment of your life. Will you set

aside the things you know are keeping you from Him?

I pray that you will.

Church Family,

Allow me to share something of what we have been working on as it relates to congregational care and safety. Church/campus safety is a key aspect of pastoral care. In early 2018, the pastor and church leaders began to evaluate FUMC procedures and the current safety of our campus. We believe the church to be lacking in procedures for a variety of events and will bring forth a proposal to amend those needs. This is a look at the major aspects of the proposal. The following persons comprise the team working on this proposal: Pastor Rickey Wade, Team Chair Dwight Miller, Elmo Birkhead, Larry Warwick, Craig Diller, Bill Caps.

We believe the following are necessary:

Review/Development of safety procedures

Development and institution of a church/campus safety team

Upgrade of physical safety with the addition of cameras and magnetic door latches.

The project scope is to review and develop procedures related (but not limited) to: Safe Sanctuaries, Missing/Abducted Children, Medical Emergencies, Hazardous Weather, Criminal Activity/Acts of Terror, and Fire; organize and imple-ment a safety team; work with Church Trustees to provide physical upgrades to the facility.

We have resourced safety procedures from several churches and institutions around the country along with interviews and consultations with local law enforcement and emergency personnel. Draft procedures are complete and will be re-vised and updated by the safety team as training and implementation occur. Final procedures will be ready for review and approval by the Church Council once the safety team is trained and in place.

We are looking to have six to eight safety teams of six people each (36 to 48 people). Six safety teams will serve on a rotation basis approximately eight weeks a year for regular Sunday services. Two teams would be for special services or events such as Christmas Eve, Trunk or Treat, funerals and weddings. Within each six-person team, four persons will be needed on any given Sunday or event. The team will be trained in the above procedures and provide communica-tions, aid, and assistance to the congregation and outside resources. In addition, the safety team will monitor the cam-pus. Also, within the safety team structure, the church office will operate as the command center for communication and advice. The command center will be manned normally by a staff person, but one person from each team will be trained as a command center operator. At the command center we will have the ability to monitor the weather, local emergency communications, campus cameras, and magnetic doors latches. The command center will be the communi-cation point between our campus and outside resources, and as such will direct outside resources as to any need and lo-cation of said need. The safety team will always be in radio communication with the command center. The organiza-tion of the safety team with the needed training and communication is Phase I of the project.

Phase II of the project will involve updating our existing camera system, magnetic door latch system, a hardline connec-tion between the Main building and the Family Activity Center, and installation/upgrade of doors to accept the magnetic latch system. (Note: Phase II does not involve the purchase of additional cameras or magnetic latches; it only prepares for such.) The affected doors of the upgrade will be those of the main sanctuary vestibule. The double doors by the stairwell will be upgraded to lock with panic bars for emergency exit. The two vestibule doors in the rear of the sanctu-ary will be replaced (without affecting the framing or architecture) with aluminum doors with frosted glass (suitable for magnetic latches) equipped with “touch sensor” panic bars for emergency exit. The hardline between the Main building and Family Activity Center will require trenching the alley between the two and installing conduit.

Phase III of the project will involve the addition of more cameras and magnetic door latches with the associated moni-tors and recording devices. It will also locate the operation of all magnetic latches in the church office. With the com-pletion of all three phases, a person in the church office will have control of all normal access to the main building and the Family Activity Center. In addition, cameras will provide visual identification of any wishing to enter our services of worship, allowing office personnel the ability to magnetically latch one or all doors to preclude entry, if necessary.

This is a basic overview of the proposed work to upgrade our care and safety of the congregation. No action has been taken by the Church Council yet and this project (if approved) will likely be amended and adjusted as we move for-ward. The purpose of this information is to keep you abreast of the work behind the scenes, allow for your input, and educate.

To this end, we have three (3) orientation sessions planned for those volunteering to become part of the safety team. The three (3) orientation sessions will be identical and a person can attend the one of his/her choice. The three sessions will take place in Davidson Hall on the following dates: Sunday, November 4th (4-5 p.m.); Monday, Novem-ber 5th (6-7p.m.); Wednesday, November 7th (6-7p.m.). Any/All are welcome to the orientation meetings to learn more.

The Henry Center—Jeff Harrison

Hey Everyone,

The ministry of the Henry Center continues to improve all the time. From new volunteers

to renovations, we are always striving to serve the most people we can in our local commu-

nity. We are in need of more volunteers as one of our regulars, Jill Lamb, will be moving in November. Jill, we thank

you for all your help in the work of the Henry Center. You will be missed. We managed to get the ceiling and floors

replaced in the waiting room for the food pantry, thanks to the work of our trustees and the grant that we received

from Food Lion and Second Harvest. We are still waiting for Food Lion to come and visit and volunteer to do even

more work. They are still adjusting after the recent hurricanes. If you are interested in being a part of this ministry,

please contact me at [email protected]. We can always use more help, and please give generously on the first

of the month as we collect our Henry Center offering during communion. -In Christ, Jeff

Annual Turkey Dinner - 2018 Wednesday, November 14, is the date of one of our church’s longstanding annual events – the Turkey Dinner. It is not only an opportunity to enjoy a great meal, but a time to gather and socialize with others we may not see on a regular basis. This activity brings together many members working together behind the scenes to make it all happen. We typically have more than 40 people doing some form of food preparation and clean-up. The process for pre-paring dressing, for example, takes three days. About 20 tur-keys will be carried home on Saturday, November 10 by vari-ous volunteers to be cooked, boned and returned on the 14th. This year the net proceeds from the event will be distributed between two mission projects our Church regularly supports. The Food Pantry provides food for needy recipients locally on a regular basis and around the holidays could use additional funds. One of our ongoing international mission projects is working to improve facilities for education and medical care in Guatemala. Team members from our church have travelled there for over ten years and are currently working to improve facilities for medical treatment of patients in the rural moun-tains. I offer thanks in advance to those who support this church ef-fort in any way. If you cannot attend, consider a donation as this is an opportunity to provide special support for these two mission projects. We have held the line on meal price at $8 for adults and $3 for children under 12, as the event is more than just a fundraiser. The fellowship that is generated is priceless…see you at the dinner. Henry Center Needs Hi Church Family,

Fall temperatures are upon us, with Winter fast approaching. We want to say "thank you" for responding to the requests for items needed and for your generous financial contributions. We at the Henry Center Food Pantry are attempting to get a head start for meeting the needs of those folks coming to us for assistance. We would like to bring before you special needs we have increasingly seen, even over the Summer months, with the plight of the Homeless. Following are a few items we are hoping to have available as needed: tents, sleeping bags, yoga mats, back packs, folding roller utility carts, etc. Please note, these items do not have to be brand new items if in good condition and clean. As you give prayerful consideration to these requests, imagine what living outdoors in the Winter must be like for the homeless in our community.

God bless each of you for the continued support of the Food Pantry, Clothes Closet and the Book Nook. Your help touches many lives each week. -Henry Center Volunteers

Congratulations!

All Saints Sunday

On Sunday, November 4th, we invite you to join us for worship as we remember the lives of our church members during the

roll call of the saints. We will read the names of every member who has entered into the Church Triumphant within the past year. We light a candle placed on the altar and ring a bell for each saint as a symbol of the light of their lives now shining

with God's eternal light. We invite you to come light a candle and lift a prayer, remembering your friends or family members.
