HORNCHURCH ROCKS The ground under St Andrew’s is 450,000 years old, deposited by ice retreating from its southernmost extent over Britain. The Dell was the limit. Ice has come and gone since, and we are now recovering from the most recent of a series of Ice Ages. The earth moves.

This matters a lot to constructors of the Lower Thames Crossing, because the bounce back of the rocks deep down has caused shifts in the London Clay and other rocks through which the tunnel must go.

Change is happening all the time, not just beneath our feet. Barry’s retirement is a wake-up call, inviting us to answer questions like:

1) How is Hornchurch changing? Who lives here? Why? With what needs? What potential?

2) What are we like? How are we changing? How is the Church of England changing? And the rest of the church?

3) Who is for us? Who is against us?

4) What might the future hold?

The debate has begun, and all can contribute. For prayer and reflection the Lord’s Prayer makes a good syllabus. So:

Who loves us?

What could we imagine people being amazed at?

If Kingdom stuff is supernatural, where will we find it?

What does God want to happen here?

How can we get more Bread ?

Being wrong about God is an offence to Him. How can we get more Truth?

Can we help each other when in difficulty?

Can we get deliverance from evil?

God bless you.

Charity of the Month ~ Bible Society

Naomi Dunn, “Open the Book” International Development Coordinator, writes:

Teams of volunteers are visiting primary schools in and around Accra, Ghana, to tell a Bible story in fun and engaging ways; in costume, or with props. Most popular of all, they invite children to be characters in the story. Your kind gifts bring joy, happiness and life-changing revelation to many through the Bible.

The Micah Group

The 3rd Hornchurch Girls’ Brigade Company

We do badge work, games, trips out, theme nights. Come along and make new friends and have fun. For further details contact Karen Speller on 01708-442848

Lettuce with a gladsome mind

It was 19th September when the PCC made orange-ments to keep a date at North Street and address some currant issues. Plum topics for the evening included:

Word had leeked that St George’s needed a coat of paint, so our gardener, Mike, and warden, Nigel, leapt into action. In our other two Churches, quite a few light bulbs need replacing. To reach the top of St Andrew’s will require a cherry picker, but for St Matthew’s, we have generously been offered the loan of a tower. Raisin awareness of our needs so often results in a 22 carrot response.

Bumper crop from St Andrew’s music – in recent years, the development of a music group has flourished alongside our well-loved choral tradition. For its fruitful growth to continue, Andy will be organist and co-ordinator of the music group, while Bill takes responsibility for the choir. It’s always a berry good move to build on our strengths together.

When the chips are down, God provides. Mary has administered the electoral roll for seven years, but now that she and Barry are leaving, Roger has stepped in to take over. Well done for being prepeared to tend the field of names.

The end of a wonderful harvest – this was Barry’s last PCC meeting after 12 years as Vicar of our Parish. We have grown together, facing difficult issues and avoiding banana skins along the way. We are so grateful for all he has done and wish Barry and Mary a peach of a retirement.

This had been quite an evening – some planting, some pruning as we grapeled with points until it was time to say that shallot for the night.

Armistice Day Today’s Remembrance Sunday when we honour those who died Who gave their lives so we could live in peace. The end of all the fighting – the war to end all wars No more loss of precious lives – hostilities would cease. And as we stood in silence – and as we bowed our heads— I thought about my Granddad and his mates – who were all dead. I thought about their families, broken and destroyed, The children with no Father coming home, The Mothers who had lost their sons so young, most only boys, Victims of that far off war – now facing life alone. There are no marches in the street, No banners held up high. Remembering those families and their pain. They struggled on un-noticed to rebuild their damaged lives To help our country heal and live again. They paid the price for all of us – their lives were torn apart— So let’s remember them with love and hold them in our hearts. So as we honour those who died – who never had a choice— Remember loved ones left who never had a voice. Elaine Pavitt

DUTY DONE In Remembrance

Take a look at our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/messychurchinhornchurch/

for regular updates and further details about when and where Messy Church is meeting. We look forward to seeing you at a Messy Church session very soon

The first Messy Church at North Street Hall after the summer holidays fell on Thursday 26th September, coinciding with Harvest time AND Rev Barry’s retirement after 12 years as our vicar. Because Barry gave us the ‘go ahead’ to start offering Messy Church in the Parish, we felt it only fitting that he took centre stage on his last visit to one of our sessions. Not an exact likeness but the young people enjoyed creating our very special scarecrow! Our harvest theme was ‘Bread’, using Jesus’ quote “I am the Bread of Life” (John 6 vs 35) as our reference. We had a brilliant puppet show explaining how communion bread represented Jesus’ body when He died for us on the cross (well done Phoebe and Saffron!), then we had lots of crafts and science experiments on the ‘bread of life’ theme before we had our dinner (with Summer Pudding as dessert) which concluded our ‘bread’ themed evening. So if we don’t take communion, maybe next time we have a piece of toast or eat a sandwich we can remember Jesus then?! We hope the 3 new families and everyone else who came had as much fun as we did

and will be back to celebrate Christmas with us on 5th December (after enjoying our Light Party on 26th October) and as always we thank all of our volunteers, who are indispensable and who help make these occasions run so smoothly. God bless you all! The Messy Church Team

We look forward to seeing you there and challenging your little grey cells!

On Saturday 14th September, the sun shone as 50 bell ringers and friends departed for our autumn coach outing to the Bedford area. At our first stop, Toddington, we joined the local coffee morning before ringing their bells to the tunes of Stedman Triples and Yorkshire Major. Moving on to Husborne Crawley, the bells were again quite heavy and the high ceiling made them challenging to ring. Courses of Bob Major and Grandsire Triples were successfully achieved. Our buffet lunch at Bromham Water Mill was gratefully received and non-ringers had extended time to eat and drink whilst the ringers went off to perform at nearby Biddenham. The tower at Biddenham was

accessed by climbing an outside staircase over part of the church roof. At Bedford ( St Paul’s) we had the opportunity to ring on a musical set of 12 bells and managed to sound Call Changes on 12 and Plain Hunt on 11. Inside the church, non-ringers visited the Wesley Pulpit where John Wesley

preached the Assize Sermon in 1758 on the theme ‘We shall all stand before the judgement seat of Christ’ Our final ring at Cardington was on a heavy but musical set of 8 bells and we enjoyed some of our best ringing of the day. This was followed by a carvery dinner and our return to Hornchurch. Our thanks go to John

Church for such a well organised and enjoyable day! Clive Stephenson

Life at St George’s Hot on the heels of the good news about the redecoration of the church (as mentioned in last month’s magazine), I can now reveal some further work due to be undertaken. The old door leading from the vestry to the outside is due to be bricked up (as detailed in our church meeting report in the July article). It has not been used for a number of years and it will have a window, so that we don’t lose too much light. This work is due to be done during half-term. At the same time, the handrail on the organ side of the steps leading up to the altar will be slightly repositioned, so that it will be much easier to use. However, in the midst of this “good” news, we are sorry to report the death of Joy Rodgers, a long-standing member of our church, whose funeral took place on 26th September. She was such a lively and versatile character and that is why it had been so sad to see her health deteriorate so rapidly over the past months. Our thought and prayers are with her daughter, Sharon (who regularly enabled her to come to church) and the rest of the family at this difficult time. We also heard of the death on 28th September of Barbara Price. Although she had never been a regular member of our congregation, she had been very much involved with various activities - both at St George’s and also in the parish. That is why she was well known by many of us. She had been ill for a long time and our thought and prayers go also to her family. Pat Bromhall

Plastic-Free Planet

One of our activities this term has been to investigate the use of plastic, how much we use it and how it is affecting our planet. We discussed at length how much plastic can be recycled and how much we actually recycle. With the help of our Young Leaders, the Rainbows created some plastic sculptures of Whales, Dolphins, Animals and Birds which are most affected by plastic pollution. St James the Least of All On the perils of eating with members of your church . . .

From: The Rectory, St James the Least of All

My dear Nephew Darren, One of the rather dubious pleasures of being rector here is to dine twice a year with Lord and Lady Shuttlingsloe. I was summoned to go along yesterday evening.

As usual, I was greeted by the footman and led into the entrance hall, where only a few weeks ago we held the parish Harvest supper for 200 people. I relinquished my coat, took a deep breath, and set off to follow him down endless corridors to the drawing room. The house is rumoured to be haunted, but I suspect any sounds of footsteps come from guests of previous years still wandering the corridors trying to find their way out.

There were the usual guests, most of whom were merely continuing conversations they had had the previous evening at another stately, decaying pile in the county. They were standing because all the chairs were occupied by the Lord's dogs, and everyone agreed that the dogs looked far too comfortable to move. Since one aged golden retriever recognised me, having developed an over-familiarity with my own dog, he amicably let me squeeze beside him on a sofa, even if it left me for the rest of the evening looking as if I was wearing an Afghan coat. When the meal was ready, the butler arrived with our overcoats, because the dining room is a cavernous chamber which is largely unheated as birds are nesting in the chimney. Lord Shuttlingsloe considers this perfectly acceptable, since his family have been eating in this way for the past 500 years, which is how long most of the present staff have worked there. Conversation at my end of the table was less than easy, since Lady S dozed throughout the meal and my companion on the other side seemed to hold me personally responsible for the Spanish Inquisition. Had I been, she would most definitely have been on my list for questioning. As Rector, one has one's social responsibilities, but I confess, there were moments when I rather envied your own evening, with a meal on a tray in front of the television – in a warm house. Your loving uncle, Eustace

80th Birthday Celebration in the Tower

Bell ringer Tony Ammerlaan celebrated his 80th birthday on Sunday 22nd September 2019. Tony has been a bell ringer at St Andrew’s for a large number of those 80 years. He was taught to ring in 1953, aged 14 and rang his first quarter peal in 1957, on the tenor to Plain Bob Triples. St Andrew’s tower was closed for 3 years in 1958 and Tony then began a long break from bell-ringing to start a family. It was his old school friend and work colleague, Ray Rogers, who persuaded Tony to return to the tower in the mid1990’s and Tony has remained a loyal member of the band ever since. In 2003 he took on the role of steeple keeper whose job it is to keep the bells in good working order and the tower clean and tidy. In this respect, Tony has done an excellent job. Additionally, Tony is involved in the local school visits to St Andrew’s where he regularly entertains groups of primary school children with stories from the tower. It therefore seemed more than fitting that Tony’s 80th birthday was marked with a celebratory drink and presentation in the tower. The photograph (above right) shows Tony with his wife Joyce receiving his present from bell master Clive Stephenson. A quarter peal was rung on his actual birthday with details shown below: Hornchurch, Essex St Andrew Sunday, 22 September 2019 1260 Plain Bob Triples 1 John W Stephenson 2 Ros C Skipper 3 John M Church 4 Jaime Hamper 5 James Laken 6 Christopher C M Pain 7 Clive J Stephenson (C) 8 Hayden R Musham For Evensong and to celebrate the 80th birthday of Tony Ammerlaan on this day. First in method - 4. First on 8 - 8.

Following bell practice on Tuesday 17th September, Barry was invited to the tower for a farewell presentation and drink. Ringing Master Clive Stephenson thanked Barry for his valuable help (left) and support over the past 17 years, particularly for the ‘new ninth bell’ project in 2013-14. Barry commented on the regular peal ringing that had taken place during his time as vicar and the peal for Barry & Mary’s wedding in August 2009 was recollected. Barry also said that he had appreciated the good integration of the bell ringers within the church community. A farewell quarter peal was rung as a tribute to Barry on his last day of ministry at St Andrew’s. Full details as follows: Hornchurch, Essex St Andrew Sunday, 29 September 2019 in 48min 1260 Grandsire Triples 1 John M Church 2 Heather A Rayner 3 Leonie J McCaughren 4 Paul T Crick 5 Jonathan R Slack 6 Gavin S Carpenter 7 Matthew E Rayner (C) 8 Alan S M Street A farewell compliment to Revd Barry Hobson on his last day of ministry at St Andrew’s, Hornchurch Clive Stephenson

Wednesday Music Evenings at Hornchurch Library

Wednesday 13th November - Just Say 'R' - presented by Stephen Raindle. Not a programme about going to see the doctor but a celebration of a few of the many well known composers whose name begins with the letter R and will include, among others, music by Rimsky-Korsakov, Rodrigo, Ravel, Respighi and quite possibly Sigmund Romberg and Richard Rogers. Wednesday 27th November - 1939 in Music & Song - presented by Brian Luck. Despite the storm clouds of World War 2 looming there was some wonderful music during the year that brought us the films Gone With the Wind and Wizard of Oz plus shows by Ivor Novello and Jerome Kern while Glen Miller made some of his most famous recordings. Local musician Brian Luck will have spent much time sifting through musical material from 1939 to present a nostalgic and memorable programme. Admission to all programmes is free but we do ask for a nominal contribution to interval refreshments. All the music is from recordings played on high-quality sound equipment. The programmes commence at 7.30pm ending by 9.30pm and are held in the 1st Floor main meeting room, Hornchurch Library, North Street (buses 165, 256 & 370 stop nearby). For any further information contact Stephen Raindle 01708 470670 or email [email protected]

Many people today would perhaps be surprised to know that less than 100 years ago the village had its own brewery. It stood on the site opposite the King’s Head (now Prezzo). Today the area is covered by shops which are well set back from the road across a very broad pavement. In 1789 the business was owned by John Woodvine and his name is now remembered by apartments off Butts Green Road off Burnwood Avenue. The brewery was sold in 1874 to the Holmes brothers of Grey Towers. Apparently it was not very prosperous and after about a year went into liquidation. It was bought from the Official Receiver by Philip Conran. When he died in 1894 it was inherited by his two sons who also had an interest in Fielders Brewery in

Brentwood. In 1925 the brewery was sold to Mann Crossman and Paulin, the Mile End brewers for £171,000. The brewery buildings were not demolished until about 1931. I have a watercolour which details a view of the brewery from the corner of Station Lane. It shows the locum which overhung the road; this contained a winch for off-loading supplies into the building. This picture also shows some Almshouses and the sign for Rumseys Garage which is shown advertising Pratts Petrol.

Rumseys also sold bicycles, tyres and inner tubes. (Above: a photograph of the same scene C1908. At that date the cycle shop to the right was Ainsworths) If the church needed to buy beer for any festivities, this was brewed in Hornchurch Hall. Russell Spencer

Prayer to our God and King

Lord Jesus, King Jesus,

In this world of trouble, we thank You that You have overcome the world! You understand the mess we are in and offer us hope and a future. We may not see how to go forward, or how to solve the problems that surround us and those we care about and those who suffer, but You are sovereign over all situations and circumstances. We can trust You, our King and our Saviour. In Your Name we give thanks and stand with confidence and strength to face each day.

Amen.
