[Zoom and Live] Small Cars, Big Inspiration Book Launch and Art Exhibit Anthony Schmidt Synchronicity, suddenly appearing through a Facebook click, can open the door to magical experiences.  I do not remember how this post caught my eye, but I was immediately drawn to a Kickstarter project to help fund a coffee table book, Small Cars, Big Inspiration. Anthony Schmidt, a 12-year-old boy, who also happens to be on the autism spectrum, has turned his love of

cars into an art form. He photographs his miniature model cars, as seen through a new perspective, creating the illusion of full-sized vehicles placed in natural scenery or as part of the downtown scene. As a bookstore owner, I was fascinated to find out more about this young man with such creative talent, focus, and determination.  

In March of 2020, when I joined, there were approxi-mately 50 group members of “Friends of Anthony Schmidt.” I discovered that Anthony had found his passion in collect-ing and photographing model cars. He uses this focus to help face the daily challenges of being on the autism spectrum. I learned through his mother’s posts, that his family believed by supporting their child’s passion, they could help him grow into his best self, able to support himself as an adult with his own creative talent.

765 people were drawn to support the publication of his book and by the time of the release in August 2020, Anthony’s social media followers had grown to over 142,000. In the first two weeks, Small Cars, Big Inspiration sold 1,000 copies, which is unheard of in the publishing industry for a first-time publication from an unknown author.

Anthony’s group has brought together people from around the world who are car enthusiasts, autism advocates and photographers. It is a village of people who respect each other and support each other with encourage-ment, inspiration, and sharing from the heart.

As the first bookstore to approach Anthony’s mother to request to carry Small Cars, Big Inspiration at Phoenix & Dragon Bookstore, I am delighted to announce an exhibit of his photography in our gallery with an Exhibit Openin on Sunday, November 8, 2020 from 4:30pm to 6pm. We will be connecting with the Anthony and his family by Zoom to share the celebration of his Bookstore Launch of his book, calendar, puzzles, t-shirts and prints. There will be a wide range of his photography, perfect for holiday surprises.
