month together (July 2021) we had an average weekend attendance of 880 people between both sites, we finished October with an average attendance of 1,116, that is 236 more people than how we began or a 26% growth. This is a great sign for us, especially as we are still coming out of the pandemic.

Another sign of hope has been the amazing response of both Latino communities of our parish.

I invited all parish leaders in these communities to participate in faith and community formation sessions over five consecutive Fridays in October and November. Their response was very moving for me, Fr. Elvio and Sisters Guadalupe and Claudia. Over 110 people attended our sessions every Friday night. Their desire to know our faith and to be active participants in the unity of both communities has been a true consolation for me and our team. The Spirit is definitely moving and we are grateful.

I thank you for the gift of your presence every week at Mass and I ask that you please continue to invite your neighbors to make our parish their spiritual home, to come worship with us, serve those in need with us, and share their lives with us.

Sincerely, Fr. Manny

It has been four months since the canonical unification of Saint Mary’s and Our Lady of Lourdes took effect on July 1st, 2021. Over the last few months, I have been working with our priests, religious sisters, and lay leaders along with the Archdiocesan Renew My Church Team in establishing a good understanding of the different communities we are trying to serve and their needs. As I have stated before, though on paper it may look like we are trying to unite two parish communities, the reality is that we are bringing together five different communities: two English speaking communities (one at Saint Mary’s and one at Our Lady of Lourdes), two Spanish speaking communities (one at Saint Mary’s and one at Our Lady of Lourdes) and a wonderful Filipino community at Our Lady of Lourdes. Each of these communities has their own expectations and hopes for the future.

As your pastor along with my team, it will be our goal to serve each community to the best of our abilities while not losing sight of the larger goal of bringing the presence of Christ, His Love and Mercy to our neighbors in Buena Park and Ravenswood who are not yet part of our community. While the challenges ahead of us are many, I am enthused by the response you have given in these initial months of unity. As you can see, our welcoming team has been counting people attending all of our masses since we joined. While in our first

MICHAEL RUZICKI, DIRECTOR OF SACRED MUSIC AND LITURGY

community. [St. John Berchmans Parish and Notre Dame de Chicago Parish, Chicago IL]

Between the pandemic, the parish merger, and staff turnover, I recognize that we may feel unsettled. But God’s presence is here. Together, we will journey along this road and support each other on the way. Let us remember that it is at liturgy that we bring our whole lives – the sufferings and joys, the struggles and victories, the deaths and new life – to the tables of the Word and Eucharist. Here, we are nourished to go forth and change the world.

I look forward to meeting you, ministering with you, and journeying with you. Come say hi after mass or send an email [email protected]. It’s important for me to get to know you.

Blessings, Michael Ruzicki Director of Sacred Music and Liturgy

•Becoming a youth choir director at age 16 taught me that leadership does not only belong to a certain age group. [St. Mary of Ostrabrama Parish, South River, NJ]

•Overseeing several choirs during college taught me that various styles of liturgical music should be embraced by and shared amongst the faithful. [The Catholic University of America,

Washington DC]

•Serving as a pastoral associate for liturgy and music at a suburban parish taught me to recognize that, while parishioners may have busy lives, they will be willing to serve if expectations are clear and see that their presence is valued. [Resurrection of Our Lord, Laurel, MD]

•Ministering in a parish with multiple worship sites taught me that mergers have great potential to break down walls of parochialism and build up the Body of Christ. [Catholic Community of South Baltimore, MD]

•Working as a diocesan catechetical leader taught me that parishes change and grow when their adult members learn to live sacramental lives. [Archdiocese of Baltimore, MD]

•Navigating the waters (twice) of the Renew My Church initiative taught me that reenvisioning and revitalizing parish life is in the hands of the baptized – all of us to get actively engaged in the workings and ministries of the

Everything in life is catechetical. Every person, every encounter, every experience has the power to reveal God’s presence to us if we are open to it.

As a Catholic Christian, I believe that liturgy has the power to inform our minds and transform our hearts so that we leave each celebration on fire with the Holy Spirit. The liturgy, as the Catechism states, is the privileged place for catechesis. By celebrating the rituals of the Church, we are shaped to live a life that shares the Good News outside the doors of the church.

It is my hope that we each come to liturgy with the openness to being transformed more and more into the image of Christ. Whereas effective catechesis shapes our mind, will, heart, emotions, and imagination – so should liturgy! Since liturgy is a communal prayer of the Church, we each play a role in each other’s spiritual journey. The way we worship as a faith family has the ability to shape the world. That is not an exaggeration – our celebration of the liturgy is meant to bring light to a darkened world. We have the responsibility to fan the flames of each other’s faith.

My name is Michael Ruzicki and I have recently started serving the parish as the Director of Sacred Music and Liturgy. In addition to my role here, I serve as the Training and Events Manager at Liturgy Training Publications, an agency of the Archdiocese of Chicago.

As you can tell from my introductory paragraphs of this message, I love the liturgy, but I see it in a much bigger context. The various experiences in my ministerial journey have shaped my understanding of liturgy’s place in the life of a parish.

HISTORY OF THE APPARITIONS OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN OF GUADALUPE IN MEXICOOne Saturday in 1531 at the beginning of December, an indigenous man named Juan Diego, went very early in the morning from the town in which he resided to Mexico City to attend his catechism classes and to hear Holy Mass. When he reached the hill called Tepeyac, he woke up and heard a voice calling him by his name.

He climbed to the top and saw a Lady of extraordinary beauty, whose dress was bright as the sun, who with very kind and attentive words said to him: “Juanito: the smallest of my children, I am always the Virgin Mary, Mother of the true God, by whom one lives. I strongly desire that a temple be built here for me, in order to show and lavish all my love, compassion, help and defense to all the inhabitants of this earth and to all those who invoke me and trust me. Go to the Bishop and tell him that I desire a temple to be built on this hill. Go and put all your effort into it. “

Returning to his town, Juan Diego met the Virgin Mary again and explained what had happened. The Virgin asked him to go again the next day to speak with the bishop and repeat her message. This time the bishop, after hearing Juan Diego told him that he should go and tell the Lady to give

him some sign that would prove that she was truly the Mother of God and that it was her will that a temple be built for her.

On his return, Juan Diego encountered the virgin and told her what had happened. The Virgin commanded him to return the next day to the same place because she would give him the sign there. The next day Juan Diego could not return to the hill because his uncle Juan Bernardino was very ill. In the early morning of December 12, Juan Diego hurried to get a priest for his uncle because he was dying. Upon reaching the place where he was to meet the Lady, he preferred to take another path to avoid her. Suddenly the virgin came out

to meet him and asked where she was going.

The embarrassed Juan Diego explained what was happening. The Virgin told him not to worry, that his uncle would not die and that he was already healthy. Then the indigenous man asked her for a sign that he should take to the bishop. Our Lady told him to go

up to the top of the hill where he found fresh Castilian roses and putting them on his tilma, he cut as many as he could and took them to the bishop.

Once in front of Bishop Zumarraga, Juan Diego unfolded his tilma, the roses fell to the ground and in the tilma appeared the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Seeing this, the bishop took the holy image to the Greater Church and built a hermitage in the place that Juan Diego had indicated.

Pius X proclaimed her as “Patroness of all Latin America”, Pius XI of all “Americas”, Pius XII called her “Empress of the Americas” and John XXIII “The Celestial Missionary of the New World” and “the Mother of the Americas “.

The image of the Virgin of Guadalupe is venerated in Mexico with great devotion, and the miracles obtained by those who pray to the Virgin of Guadalupe are extraordinary. You can also visit the exact replica of her image in our church.

NOVENA TO THE VIRGIN OF GUADALUPE Starts on December 3 and ends on December 11 Every day at Saint Mary of the Lake with 6:30pm Mass, reflection and then the praying of the Holy Rosary.

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and Christmas and the New Year are close on its heel. For many people, the holidays can be a time of increased stress or sadness, and those reactions are perfectly normal. There are many factors that contribute to the holiday blues: We frequently overschedule ourselves with social events in November and December. We might overeat and drink too much at these social events. Family get-togethers can result in arguments and increased stress. There is the pressure of end-of-year deadlines at work and overtime requirements, or there might not be enough work to pay for the gifts we would like to give. During the holidays we especially

miss loved ones who do not live nearby or who are no longer with us. The lack of sun at this time of year also can contribute to a sense of feeling down. Any one of these factors alone can lead to physical illness, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.

There are several ways that we can prepare ourselves for holiday stress. Self-care is always important, and especially so at the holidays.

1. If you’re feeling overwhelmed with social activities, prioritize which ones you can attend and kindly and gently accept your own

limitations and boundaries.

2. Recognize that you do not have to force yourself to be happy if you do not feel that way; be honest about your emotions. Avoid using alcohol or other substances to numb or escape your feelings.

3. Set a realistic budget for gift-giving. Often, we get caught up in the commercialization of the holidays, but we can refuse to let

advertisers increase our stress.

4. If you’re dealing with loss, grief, or trauma, ask for support. People want to help, but often do not know what would be helpful. Ask someone to bring over a cup of coffee. Even a small connection with a friend or neighbor can go a long way in

alleviating our sense of isolation at the holidays.

5. If the lack of sunlight is an issue for you, try to get outside at lunch for a while when the sun is brightest. Acknowledge your lack of energy and create a comfortable space for yourself indoors in which you can rest and feel supported.

If you utilize these tips and still feel depressed or overwhelmed, professional help is available. I am here to support you. Counseling does not have to be a long-term undertaking. Counseling is available for as few as one or several sessions, which can help tide you over during what can be a difficult time of the year.

If you need to talk, please reach out today.
