“Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the lives of Quinn & John, the unborn babies we have spiritually adopted who are in danger of abortion.”

Honoring our Veterans Each year we honor our Veterans on November 11th. This is a good and holy thing to do. Why? -Because our veterans are willing to put their life on the line to defend our nation. The Catechism of the Catholic Church not only states that public authorities “have the right and duty to impose on citizens the obligations necessary for national defense” but also that: “Those who are sworn to serve their country in the armed forces are servants of the security and the freedom of nations. If they carry out their duty honorably, they truly contribute to the common good of the nation and the maintenance of peace.” (CCC #2310) Therefore, even those who have been drafted and served honorably are rightfully honored with our gratitude. Patriotism, the love and service of one’s country, follows from the duty of gratitude and belongs to the order of the virtue of charity. While it is wrong to disregard what is morally wrong and unjust in one’s nation, patriotism seeks the moral good and justice in one nation and does not exclude the “just criticisms of that which seems harmful to the dignity of persons and to the good of the community.” (CCC #2237) Thus, while we must always condemn that which dishonors our armed services and our nation, we must show gratitude to those who have defended our nation, freedom, and the common good with honor, as the majority of our men and women in the armed services have done.

THANK YOU TO ALL OUR VETERANS!

Holy Days of Obligation

Unfortunate only a small number of our Catholic population comes to church on the holy days of obligation. I presume for many it is not a case of ill will or rebellion but more to do with a fundamental flaw in one’s understanding on the nature of the authority of the Church and sin. Some people are miffed when at one time it was a mortal sin to miss Mass on a holy day of obligation and then suddenly the day is no longer a day of obligation (i.e., to attend Mass). How can it be a mortal sin to miss a holy day one year and the next it is not a sin? Because of this confusion they do not feel obliged to fulfill this obligation. The mistake behind the question is a presumption that the sin is rooted in the fact that the individual did not attend Mass for that holy day. The sin is not so much the missing of Mass but of disobedience to the Church. The authority of the Church is founded upon the words of our Lord to St. Peter: “Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” (Matt. 16:19b). Therefore, if the Church binds us to attend Mass on a particular holy day under a serious obligation, then we are obliged to go. However, if the Church frees us from this obligation then Christ frees us from this obligation. As of now the church obliges us to attend Mass on Holy Days of obligation: “The faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed from their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin.” (C.C.C. #2181) All Saints - November 1, Immaculate Conception - December 8, Christmas - December 25, Mother of God - January 1, Ascension Thursday, Assumption - August 15 are all holy days of obligation in the United States unless otherwise stated. If the day falls on a Saturday or a Monday, there is no obligation to attend Mass with the exceptions of the Immaculate Conception, since it is the Feast Day for the United States, and Christmas. Since All Saints day fell on a Monday, the obligation to attend Mass was dropped. Please remember to mark your calendars for the next holy day of obligation on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Dec. 8. In Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, Fr. Jeffrey Galens
