LETTER FROM PASTOR MARK

Dear Friends,

Greetings and peace to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. We’re entering a season of gratitude, expecta-tion, and joy. These three attributes are at the core of our faith, and when practiced they have the power to transform our lives. Let’s take time and reflect on these important spiritual disciplines that bring strength to our spirituality.

There is power found in gratitude. Henri Nouwen writes "Gratitude goes beyond the 'mine' and the 'thine' and claims the truth that all of life is a pure gift. In the past, I always thought of gratitude as a spontaneous response to the awareness of gifts received, but now I realize that gratitude can also be lived as a discipline. The discipline of gratitude is the explicit effort to acknowledge that all I am and have is given to me as a gift of love, a gift to be cele-brated with joy." When was the last time you slowed yourself down and acknowledged that gift?

The season of the harvest is a beautiful metaphor reminding us that we have been blessed. Whether that har-vest is great or small, the Creator has blessed us with love and grace, and such gifts need to be shared. The holiday of Thanksgiving was born in the midst of the Civil War, and it becomes a reminder to us that we can live in gratitude even in the midst of difficulty, that we can find blessing even in the midst of pain. Perhaps our blessings have less to do with the list of all the things we have and more to do with the very gift of life, the gift of love, and the gift of God's loving presence with us.

There is the power found in expectation. Mary embodies this spirit when she sings in thanksgiving for her blessings in the midst of dealing with all the fallout of her pregnancy with Jesus: a fiancé who isn't sure if he can trust her and stay with her, a community judging her harshly as an unwed teenage mother in a time when that was considered unacceptable. All that is true, and yet she sings: "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on the low-liness of his servants. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed." (Luke 1:46-48).

Her spirit rejoices in divine expectation that God was going to do something amazing in her life that will bring hope and redemption to a broken world. How can we cultivate this practice of gratitude and expectation not through comparisons but through the awareness of God with us?

Finally, there is the power found in joy! Christmas should focus our hearts on the reconciling work of Christ. Paul couches the coming of Christ in terms of reconcilia-tion. "God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself" (2 Corinthians 5:19). Any cel-ebration of Christ should reflect the core purpose of His coming, and that was to recon-cile God to the world. There is joy in knowing that God so loved creation that He sent His only Son to the world, to bring forgiveness and reconciliation to all!

Let us journey together as we welcome this season of gratitude, expectation and joy into our lives. Wishing all of you God’s richest blessings!

CIRCUIT CHARGE CONFERENCE

Saturday, November 10 · 10 AM · New London UMC

All the churches in our circuit will hold their Charge Conferences together at New London United Methodist Church, 709 W. Pine St., New London. We will meet to lift up the ministries of each church and present our Charge Conference paperwork. The District Superintendent will then lead us in a brief workshop. Everyone is welcomed and encouraged to attend.

VETERAN’S DAY SERVICE Sunday, November 11 · 8 AM at Country Site, 9:30 AM at City Site

On Sunday, November 11, we will have a special Veteran’s Day Service. Please submit a picture of yourself or a special loved one during their time in the service and include the name, rank, year and theater of service. Pictures can be sub-mitted via email to [email protected] or dropped off in the church office no later than Monday, November 5. Please invite your friends and family to this special service.

HALLOWEEN COMMUNITY DINNER Wednesday, October 31 · 5—7 PM at City Site

Join us for a FREE meal of hot dogs, chips, pickles, desserts and drinks. We will also show a short, kid-friendly Hal-loween movie. Kids will receive a bookmark. If they bring in the New Life UMC Coloring Page from the “Say No To Drugs” Coloring Book, they will receive a free dilly bar coupon. All are welcome! Invite your friends and family mem-bers! COMMUNITY ECUMENICAL THANKSGIVING EVE SERVICE Wednesday, November 21 · 7 PM · St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 915 Ivory St., Seymour

All are invited to the annual Ecumenical Thanksgiving Eve Service as we gather as sisters and broth-ers in Christ to reflect on the many blessings God has given us and to give thanks with one voice as Chris-tians. The offering will benefit the local food pantry, or you may bring a non-perishable food item to do-nate to the pantry. A pie social will follow the service. Let us give thanks to the Lord for the many blessings we have received!

“BLESSINGS OF HOPE” SERVICE

Thursday, December 6 6:30 PM at New Life UMC City Site

New Life United Methodist Church and Muehl-Boettcher Funeral Home are once again sponsoring the “Blessings of Hope” service. “Blessings of Hope” is an evening of fellow-ship and prayer to help those families who have lost loved ones understand how to cope with the upcoming holidays. Everyone is welcome to attend. If you know of some-one who would benefit from this service, please pass the information on to them.

FINANCE COMMITTEE Consecration Sunday will be held on November 4th. There will be an All-church meeting to decide how to go forward with the Country Site. This is a very important meeting! Please attend worship No-vember 4th at 9:30 a.m. worship with the meeting shortly after. Now is the time to make donations to the church. EFT, Electronic Funds Transfer, are always an option. Just sign up and funds will be automatically transferred to the church. Be generous all year long with EFT’s.

BELL CHOIR The Bell Choir is still looking for one or two more members. It is a great way to be involved with the Music Ministry here at New Life! Are you concerned about not being able to read music? Don’t

worry! If you can count 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4, you can play the bells! The Bell Choir meets each Wednesday at 5:30 pm (except the first Wednesday of the month). Call Melissa Rettler 920-841-0519 if you are interested in joining. And thank you to eve-ryone who donated to the bell cleaning and refurbishing fund. It has been paid in full. We look forward to many more years of playing the bells during worship!

CHANCEL CHOIR The choir practices each Sun-day at 9:00 AM. Join us for a fun practice, fellowship and making a joyful noise to the Lord!

NEW this year: Our Kids will be hosting a Vendor Sale Fundraiser in St. John’s Gym from 8am-2pm. These ven-dors will be donating 10-25% of their sales on December 1 to the Our Kids program: KEEP Collective, LuLaRoe, Mary Kay, Norwex, Pampered Chef, Pink Zebra, Thirty-One and Tupperware. Join us on December 1st for great

gift-giving ideas.

OUR KIDS AND KAPTURE SALON JOIN FORCES FOR HOLIDAY GIVING Kapture Salon will be collecting shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, toothbrushes and toothpaste that we will deliver to students with the Our Kids bags on December 21. School counselors also requested socks for the

students. Please join us in donating socks for students in need at our local schools.

HOLIDAY SCRIP ORDERS SCRIP orders will be placed every week from November 4 through December 17.

A great big thanks to John Lueck for leading the (Kwik Trip) Milk Moola milk caps fundraiser (please continue to collect the milk caps and bag labels). A great big thanks to all who helped

with and made purchases at the Sal’s Brat Fry in September. $750 was raised that day.

We are currently serving 177 students through the Our Kids program.

NEW LIFE UNITED METHODIST WOMEN

We have a busy schedule coming for the end of the year. We are hosting the Halloween free community meal. Children who received the Say No to Drugs Coloring Book from the Advertiser Community News can color the New Life UMC page, bring it to the meal and receive a free DQ Dilly Bar. Every child at the meal will also receive a book-mark. Thank you to DQ of Seymour for donating the Dilly Bar coupons. The 8th Annual Craft Sale will be held on Saturday, December 1st from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. A $1.00 donation will get you in the doors. (All the proceeds from the entrance fee will be donated to the Seymour Food Pantry.) We will again be serving “The

Largest Walking Tacos” in the City of Seymour. Crafters are already register-ing; cream puffs will be ordered. If you know of any crafters who may be interest-ed, please call Nancy Brinkman at 920-833-2614 or the church office at 920-833-7308. The Miriam Circle will meet on Wednesday, November 7th, and Wednes-day, December 5th at 5:30 p.m., and then pack the Our Kids bags. The Mary Circle will meet on Thursday, November 15th, at 9:30 a.m. for their regular meeting. Their Christmas Party is at Kary’s Restaurant on Thursday,

December 20th at 11:30 a.m. Please bring two $1.00 gift wrapped presents for Bingo. Spouses and guests are wel-come.

YOUTH 2019 · July 10-14, 2019

Y19 or Youth 2019 stands for the National Youth Gathering for United Methodist Youth in the United States. This event occurs every 4 years and is ap-proaching July 10-14, 2019. We had 13 from our youth group attend the National Youth Gathering back in 2015 and we hope to have another group attend this up-coming summer. Youth2019 takes place in Kansas City, Missouri and is available to all current 6th gr - 12th gr (2018-2019 school year). There are mission and service opportunities, prayer stations, fun fellowship time, Chris-tian concerts, etc. The only cost to attend is $150 per youth which includes Y19 registration, transportation, hotel and some food - as well as your participation in trip fundraisers. DEADLINE to sign up is Wednesday, November 28, 2018. If interested please touch base with Kristi for more details. :-)

WE ARE ON A MISSION…

Many mission opportunities are available for our congregation to participate in. If you don’t feel drawn to any of our current projects you can always suggest another one. The world is in dire need of the Love of Christ. Mis-sions is simply putting our hands, feet, talents, gifts, and yes, money, to work to express the Love that God has for a lost and dying world. Each of us is under an obligation to spread the Good News. Our entire denomination is built on this principal. Giving of your resources to fund the Warming Shelter, Food Pantry, Salvation Army, Our Kids, UMCOR, and multiple other programs and projects is greatly appreciated, BUT we also have the ability to get more hands on. We can throw our whole body and soul into this work.

The Rainbow Covenant is an example. Each band of the rainbow rep-resents a different arena of mission opportunity. This gives each of us an avenue to follow our passion. Red is Local Mission; Yellow is Conference Pro-jects; Blue is International Advance Projects; Violet is UMCOR; Orange is Special Sundays; Green is Nation Advance Projects; Indigo is In Mission To-gether; and Burgundy is Missionary Support. As you can see, we are already doing several bands of color. One of our biggest obstacles is we MUST pay

our apportionments in full each year. Our church family can do this! Let’s work together to make this happen and have our Love for Christ have an impact around the world. Thank you to those that have stepped up and taken a Saturday at Pillars Adult Shelter (formerly known as Fox Valley Warming Shelter). There are still dates available, including December 15. There are many ways you can help – cooking, serving, praying, donating etc. Contact Becky or the church office to pick your date. Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays are wonderful and joyous for most of us; however many of our neigh-bors are in need and face a bleak season. Giving opportunities abound for our church. Look around you and pick one that you are comfortable with. Don’t forget to have fun also; the craft sale and our famous cream puff sale generate funds for mission projects. What could be easier?! Don’t forget to recycle your aluminum cans for missions. Just throw them in the bin by the edge of the driveway.

Looking ahead the Mission committee would like to plan a working mission trip to the Midwest Distribution Center near Springfield, Illinois. Your help is needed – we must register in advance to be put on the calen-dar to schedule the date and length of stay. Once we make a commitment and send in our deposit ($20 per person non-refundable) we can obtain a date(s). We must know the level of interest and how long you would like

to stay – a day or two or up to a week or two. There is a dormitory with kitchen facilities. Work days are Monday- Friday 8:30-4:30 with an hour lunch. Ages 11 and up are welcome. Please contact Becky or the office for more de-tails and to sign up. (We know – depending on the date you may not be able to attend.) A brochure is available on the bulletin board. Continue to pray for our outreach and mission projects and pray for discernment as to how you can become an integral part of God’s mission to the world. God Bless, Becky Mueller (920-464-0320)

SALVATION ARMY RED KETTLE BELL RINGERS NEEDED

Calling all ringers, one and all! The Red Kettle season is starting soon for The Salvation Army, Outagamie County Service Extension. Please consider ringing 1 or 2 hours. The money stays in your community to assist low-income families with food, Thanksgiving, Christmas, emergency assistance and many more programs. TEENSERVE 2019 INFORMATIONAL SUPPER Saturday, November 3 · 5:30 PM · Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Seymour

FREE Chili and Soup Supper! At this dinner you will hear about TeenServe, coming to the Seymour community in June 2019. Hundreds of teen and adult volunteers from across the Midwest are coming to help with home repair, painting, wheelchair ramps, house steps, and much more. All these efforts will help the elderly or those who can’t physically or financially afford it. TeenServe is going to be an incredible event! Come learn how you can quali-fy for free home repair, or how you can get involved and volunteer.

The Goal: PROVIDE FREE home repair and services for 40-60 resident families of our community IN ONE WEEK! The hotline is open! Call 1-800-596-3498 to tell us about your home.
