November Knightly News
Are you doing
the
KNIGHT
thing?.... Principal’s Message...
Dear Queen Elizabeth Families,
October was a busy month! The QE staff has been hard at work setting goals for improving
student achievement in literacy and numeracy. Ask your child about strategies they are
learning in class toward our school goal of improved problem solving skills. When you are in
visiting at the school be sure to look at the front bulletin boards where student problem solv-
ing work is on display for each of our grade level divisions. As part of our goal setting for
student achievement we review our 2013-2014 EQAO results. For those who would like to
view our results, the EQAO School Report is available on our school website at
www.publicboard.ca under the Queen Elizabeth school listing. Integral to achieving these
goals is the valuable partnership between home and school. Continued this year is the No-
vember Progress Report as well as the parent/teacher interview times. You will receive your
child's Progress Report on November 17, 2014. It is intended to provide you with an anecdo-
tal summary of your child's progress throughout the start of the term as well as ways in
which you can assist your child in their learning experience. The first term Report Cards,
complete with grades will be sent home on February 2, 2015. This year, the parent/teacher
interviews will take place the evening of November 20, from 4:30 to 7:00p.m. After reading
your child's report, should you have questions or concerns we encourage you to call the
school and make an interview time with your child's teacher. Please note there is a PA Day
on Friday, November 21-staff will be involved in Professional Development during that day.
Another important factor in increasing student achievement is “time on task,” (time spent
learning). Research shows that increasing time on task results in “substantially improved
student achievement”. Every day at Queen E, our staff endeavours to make sure every mi-
nute of instructional time is focused on purposeful learning. Missing any of that time puts
students behind and creates frustration or defeat because they feel they cannot catch up. It
is extremely important that students attend school, arriving on time between 8:15-
8:30a.m., every day. Unless students are too ill to participate in regular school activities,
they should be at school. Please try, whenever possible, to schedule appointments outside of
instructional time. If your child is going to be absent or late arriving, please be certain to call
the school and leave a message. As part of ensuring that all of our students are safe we are
required to speak with the parents/guardians of students who are absent or receive a mes-
sage regarding all student absences and lates from the parent/guardian. Thank you for as-
sisting us in maintaining the Safe Schools protocol.
Thank you to all who were able to attend the October School Council meeting. School Council
provides an opportunity for you to stay informed and also to participate in school life at
Queen E. We welcome and encourage you to join us at our next meeting in January. Babysit-
ting is provided free of charge for children of parents attending. Please join us!
Queen E. Knight spirit wear will be on sale soon. Look for the order forms to come home with
your child at the start of the month. Along with t-shirts, long sleeved shirts and sweatshirts,
school caps, toques and track suits will also be available. NEW this year- school spirit wear
will also be available in our Castle Colours. Your child will know which Castle they belong to if
you wish to purchase accordingly. The spirit wear is not a fundraiser- all items are sold at
the school cost for purchasing.
As always, please feel free to contact us at the school with questions, concerns or good news
to share. Your input is always valued!

Math problem solving continues to be our instructional focus at QEPS. Look at the problem
solving that is happening on all four bulletin boards surrounding the main office.
Coats for Kids
Thank you to all those who brought in
coats, hats, gloves or mittens. Thank you to Don’s appliance for donating
the collection boxes. Distribution of Coats for any families
who require gently used winter jackets will be taking place at the South Essex
Community Council, 215 Talbot St. E. on:

From the Knights of the Green Table… Our Eco-club continues to build upon its relationship with the local community. Discussions with representatives from Gleaners and
Access Kingsville will lead to an increase in our gardens in the spring with a focus on greater food production for those in need.
Trees from our Nursery have recently been planted in our schoolyard in places that lack substantial shade. Our Thursday
group is keeping their fingers crossed as they recently submitted a
grant proposal to the United Way for new tools and lumber.
Intramurals are well under way at QEPS Junior and Intermediate students will continue to take part in
intramural Dodgeball during morning recesses during the month of the November. At the same time, we are beginning to run
primary soccer games at recesses for our grade 1 and 2 stu-dents.
Cross Country Success…
Our Cross Country Team concluded another successful season with top
20 finishes for Sydnnie, Amber, Aubrey, Arthur, Ariya, Keyara, Charlize
and Lydia at the East Mersea Meet. At the County Meet in Kingsville,
our junior girls team placed 3rd and qualified for the District Meet where
all of the girls finished in the top 100. Great effort, knights!
