Revd Jeanette writes … Dear Friends……. We are at that time of year again which calls for Remembrance. The leaves are falling, the winds are picking up and the weather is turning that bit colder. Autumn is most definitely here, with the darker mornings and the longing to be warm and cosy indoors.

As November beckons, we are, at that ‘remembering place’. We will remember ‘All Hallows Eve’ or Halloween as it has become known. Following immediately on the heels of this is ‘All Saints Day’, in which we remember the saints living and departed who have worked so tirelessly for the glory of God. Then comes ‘All Souls Day’, when we remember the ‘faithful departed’. Those who have died and gone before us into eternity.

We will also join in with our national celebration of Bonfire Night on November 5th, when we remember ‘Gunpowder, treason and plot!!’ Bonfires all over the country will light the night sky, and the darkness will be banished, if only for a short while.

Remembrance Sunday falls on 10th November this year, when we remember those who gave their lives and their all for the pursuit of freedom in all the wars that have taken place. To top off this period of remembrance, at the end of November we celebrate ‘Christ the King’. A time for acknowledging that Jesus is Lord of heaven and earth, Indeed Lord of all that is.

The thing that binds all of these acts of remembrance together is the theme of ‘light’. Light coming to brighten our darkness. Who can forget when the prophet says in the bible “the people who have walked in darkness have seen a great light”. We are preparing ourselves for the

Page 4: November Magazine - Ryburn Benefice · 2019. 11. 1. · Churchwardens Jen Hallos 01422 832700 Jenhallos2@gmail.com Lynne Wheale 01422 834993 lynnewheale@hotmail.co.uk Verger Eleanor

coming darkness as the days grow shorter, and as we prepare to enter Advent, a time of preparation and waiting for ‘the light that is to come’.

The very act of remembering can also help us to shed light on things long past. We remember people, places, times of sorrow and times of joy. We are all human and are not immune from the experiences of life, nor are we immune from remembering. Remembering one good thing though, at a particular time of darkness can make all the difference in the world. It can lift our spirits and give us renewed hope. I hope that happens for you this November. That you find renewed hope in all things, especially God’s power for mercy and love.

God bless you all Revd Jeanette

Ketchup

A woman was trying hard to get the ketchup to come out of the bottle.

During her struggle the phone rang so she asked her four-year old daughter

to answer it. “It’s the minister, Mum,” the child said to her mother.

Then she told her caller: “Mummy can’t come to the phone right now. She’s

hitting the bottle.”

While out in the town, I saw an elderly couple holding hands while they were walking. As they approached, I commented on how romantic it was.

The man replied, “We have been holding hands when we go out in public for years. I have to. If I let go, she shops.”

Hello God ……. Nigel Beeton writes: I hope we’ll all have a great time celebrating Guy Fawkes Night. But all that firework fun is tinged by the hatred between different groups of Christians across the centuries…

Guy Fawkes Night Sharp sounds and bright illuminations Roaring fires and celebrations Incandescent constellations Multichrome disintegrations Festive fireworks and frivolity Jumping Jacks and all such jollity!

But, pause between those stellar shows, Perhaps we might remember those Through centuries of”Christian” strife Have lived their faith, and paid their life. Remember too, before you’re done, That Jesus prayed we might be one. by Nigel Beeton

The last Sunday before Advent is the Sunday of Christ the King….

As the shock of the nails

The hope of a people,

Far away,

A people who don’t know about distance.

But one far-off one

Comes close,

Reaches for the kingdom

As he shares

The cross crisis,

As he cries

In God-recognition,

In longing,

In hanging

A voice in the night ‘The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue, to know the word

that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear

to listen like one being instructed.’ Isaiah 50:4

Awake in the early hours, and my thoughts fluttering here and there, the

name of a friend dropped into my mind as if from nowhere together with the

words: “Tell her, ‘God is aware of you.’”

Eventually I fell asleep again but when I woke in the morning the words were

still there. I had a busy day ahead but as I ate my breakfast, I felt I should text

her straight away with what I had been given and trust it would make sense

to her.

Midmorning I received a message back. I knew nothing of her circumstances,

but both she and her husband were facing major difficulties in their work

situations. As they prayed together the night before she asked the Lord to

send her a word of encouragement. As she started her day my text arrived.

She was so encouraged, and so was I.

As I ponder this event two things stand out to me.

(1) God is intimately aware of each one of us, and knows our circumstances.

He sees us, He knows what we are going through. He will help us find a way

through. And give us the strength and guidance we need. As you read this, He

says to you: ‘I am aware of you.’

(2) If God drops the name of someone into your mind take it as an indication

to pray for them. If words are given to you for them, then share them – either

personally, or via a written note or a text message. It may be just what they

need to hear.

ST PETER’S CHURCH, SOWERBY – BELLS -

The eight bells in the bell tower at St Peter’s Church were made by

John Taylor and Co. at their foundry in Whitechapel in London. Cast in

1781 they were a complete ring of eight. Four of the bells were

donated by the Stansfeld family of Field House, Sowerby. Along with

the Rawson family of Brockwell, they had connections with the church

for generations, contributing to St Peter’s throughout its existence.

The bells have the maker’s name and date –“William Chapman of

London, Fecit 1781 and “recast” by John Taylor& Co Loughborough,

1954. They also have the following inscriptions ---

Treble bell – “For the old bell”

2nd – “By assessment”

3rd – Gift of Joseph Priestley”

4th - “Gift of Martha Stansfield”

5th – “Gift of Ann Stansfield”

6th –Gift of George Stansfield”

7th – “By subscription”

8th – “Gift of Susan Stansfield” - (this surname spelling used in the

booklet “A Brief History & Guide”)

To commemorate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth 11 in June 1952

the bells were removed to be re-cast in 1954 at the firms

Loughborough foundry. Long serving bell ringers included Thomas

(Tommy) Brown of Sowerby Hall (facing King Street) and Ken Harrison a

former employee at the Halifax Courier.

There is inscribed on the waist - “This ring of eight bells was recast by

John Taylor & Co. 1954 in commemoration of the Coronation of Queen

Elizabeth 11. June 2nd 1953”.

When I was a pupil of St Peter’s Infants School across from the church,

now a Community Centre, during the early 1950s, a special treat was to

be taken into the Church. Teacher Mr. Ingham occasionally gathered

his class together and announced we were going up into the “ringing

room” where the bell ropes were hanging down. Here the class sat

cross legged on the floor to hear Mr.Ingham read to us from a book we

were following. It was here that the slightly scary teacher – known for

his chalk & blackboard rubber throwing – took on a more gentle and

humane approach to his lesson!

Some years ago it was possible to climb up to view the bells and to visit

the top of the tower to view Town Gate & beyond, but this is no longer

possible due to Health & safety rules.

And Finally….. Lead us not…

I had been teaching my three-year old daughter the Lord’s Prayer. For several

evenings at bedtime, she would repeat after me the lines from the prayer.

Finally, she decided to go solo. I listened with pride as she carefully

enunciated each word, right up to the end of the prayer: “Lead us not into

temptation,” she prayed, “but deliver us some e-mail. Amen”

Why not war?

The history teacher was trying to impress upon her class the advantages of

peace and disarmament. “How many of you boys object to war?” she asked.

Up went several hands. “And why is that, Charles?” she went on. “Because

wars make history,” Charles responded soberly.
