Fallsburg Library Welcomes
New Director!
Pennie Mercado, Principal Clerk, Fallsburg Library
The Fallsburg Public Library in Sullivan County welcomes
their new director, Kelly Wells.
As a native Fallsburg resident, Kelly is no stranger to
Fallsburg Library. She was
a Summer Page in 2001-
2002 and then after
receiving her Bachelor’s
degree from Flagler
College, she again joined us
in 2012 as a part-time clerk.
Kelly again returned to
college and received her
MLIS from Valdosta State
University shortly before
being appointed as Director
of Fallsburg Library.
Kelly knows almost
everyone and they know
her. She holds the commitment to our community very high
on her priorities. Her knowledge of the town, the people and
the area are invaluable and she has been welcomed with open
arms. Small changes have been taking place at the library and
bigger ones are yet to come as the Board of Trustees is
talking about expanding.
When not at the library, Kelly can be found working in the
box office at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts on concert
days or teaching swim lessons for the Town of Fallsburg’s
Learn to Swim Program.
Her family includes her husband of two years Mike,
stepson Tyler and two dogs, Lilly a golden retriever and
Hunter a bully mix. In her limited spare time, she enjoys
spending time with her family and friends engaged in
activities such as traveling, hiking and swimming.
Kelly is enjoying her work at Fallsburg Library and looks
forward to collaborating with other members of RCLS.
Welcome Kelly Wells!
New Fallsburg Library Director Kelly Wells

Teen Battle of the Books
Randall Enos, RCLS Youth Services Consultant
On Saturday, September 10 while tennis stars were battling it out at the U.S. Open in
Queens, Teen Battle of the Books stars were battling it out at the 8th Annual RCLS Teen
Battle of the Books at SUNY Orange in Middletown.
Fifteen stellar teams representing RCLS member libraries competed for the honor of being
the 2016 RCLS Teen Battle of the Books Champs. Team members read a set of eight books
and competed to be
the first to answer
questions about them
and the best part is
they all seemed to
have fun. This year
all of the teams
p r ov ed to b e
particularly well-
prepared. There were
many close, nail-
b i t i n g b a t t l e s ;
however, only one
team prevailed as the
championship team.
For the third year
in a row, the winner
of the book battle
was the Daniel
Pierce Library Team
from Grahamsville, which steamrolled to the top and will reign as the 2016 Champions.
Congratulations to the Team, Coach Matt Haynes and library staff member Anita Jones.
The powerhouse Cornwall Public Library Team expertly managed to work its way into
second place. Congratulations Cornwall Team, Coach Lisa SinClair and staff member Liz
Fisher.
The team from the New City Free Library came back from an early loss and placed third
this time around. Congratulations to Team New City and Coach Mary Phillips.
A diagram showing how all the teams fared is posted to the RCLS website.
We were especially pleased to have Assemblyman James Skoufis (99th District) present at
the program. Assemblyman Skoufis gave a brief greeting and praised all the participants for
their endeavors in keeping literature and learning alive and healthy. He also gave a special
shout out to the four teams from his district (Albert Wisner, Cornwall, Moffat, and Rose
Memorial).
Special thanks to the SUNY Orange English Department for cosponsoring the event again
this year and thanks to all who participated volunteers, officials, coaches, planners,
parents, families, and most of all the team members. We look forward to seeing them all
again next year.
