Dear Member

The NTEU believes it is important to support staff elected Fellows of Senate who have a good understanding of the issues facing University staff and the direction of the University. We are urging staff to vote for the following active, prominent NTEU members. They have all played an important role in the NTEU’s recent campaigns, our Enterprise Bargaining negotiations and our response to the University’s Strategic Plan 2011 - 2015.

It is critically important that we have advocates for staff, the University and higher education who are our representatives on the Senate.

ACADEMIC CANDIDATE INFORMATION Dick BryanProfessor, Political Economy

I have been at the University of Sydney since 1984. I am Professor of Political Economy. I have twice been on the NTEU enterprise bargaining team, including that which negotiated the current agreement, an agreement that has been widely recognised as innovative and effective. I also handle individual industrial cases for academic and general staff.

With this background I have a good sense of the workings of the University, and also how to advocate forcefully on behalf of academic staff, while recognizing that the goal is to negotiate towards improved practical outcomes.

Marian BairdProfessor, Work and Organisational Studies

I am Professor of Work and Organisations in the Business School and have been a teaching and research academic at the University of Sydney since 1997. As the University enters a new period of organisational change it is imperative that you have active representatives on Senate. I have experience representing the interests of academics through my roles as an NTEU Vice-President (Academic) and having served on various University Committees.

I am also Director of the Women and Work Research Group and have considerable expertise in advancing matters of gender equity and ensuring the University plays a positive role in society by contributing to policy debates.

Ariadne VromenAssociate Professor, Government and International Relations

I am an Associate Professor in Government and International Relations, and have been a full-time academic at this University for 12 years. I am active in the NTEU at the local and national level. I coordinated our Strategic Directions response to last year’s University Green and White Papers; have been a National Councillor since 2006, and Chair of the NTEU National Research Policy Advisory Committee since 2005.

During that time I have seen universities change and the pressures of academic work increase. But excellence needs fair governance processes that create equitable workloads and employment security for all academic staff.

Christopher MurphyBosch Professor, Histology and Embryology

I am Bosch Professor of Histology and Embryology and Professor of Female Reproductive Biology. I was appointed to The University of Sydney in 1984. During my time here I have had numerous roles including: NTEU Branch Committee 1988 to 1998, Chair of the Academic Staffing Committee 2004 to 2008 and Vice President of the Association of Professors from 2004 till the present. I have been Head of the School of Medical Sciences since 2000 and currently sit on the Divisional Boards of two of the new University Divisions.

In these various roles I have considerable experience of University functioning (or not) which I believe would be valuable to staff and the University on Senate.

NON-ACADEMIC CANDIDATE INFORMATION John DodsonNetwork Manager, Physiology, School of Medical Sciences

I have been a vocal member of University general staff since joining USYD and I am passionate about the rights of staff in the organisation. I currently work in the School of Medical Sciences/Physiology on Engineering and computer/network projects related to research in Medical Science.I can contribute a forthright, inquiring, and critical nature to the position of General Staff representative. I would work to ensure better consultation for general staff, try to improve communications from Senate to staff and work towards more than one General Staff member on senate.
