Important information for Utah and Idaho claims

The Utah water permit for recreational dredging:

http://www.waterrights.utah.gov/strmalt/rds.asp

You can file online at no charge. Be sure to have the dredge statement in

the comment section highlighted before submitting the form or the process

will not complete. Check the box for Sevier County, Mill Creek, if you in-

tend to dredge at NUPA Peekaboo claim in the Little Sevier Canyon. Print

and sign the form and keep it with you when on the claims.

The Idaho water use permit is required for all who recreationally pan,

sluice, dredge or use a high banker. The fee is $10 for Idaho residents

and $30 for all others. You will need to attach copies of maps for any lo-

cations in Idaho you intend to work. You can copy or print them from the

claims guide. Contact [email protected] if you need help.

Idaho dredgers must complete an EPA water permit process (new in

2013). The NUPA claims on the Middle Fork of the Boise (NUPA 5, Wish-

ful 1,2 and 3,) are still open to dredging (June 30—September 30).

The EPA permit application can be submitted now. The permit itself will

not be issued until later this Spring., likely middle of May.

maps and descriptions of open and closed waterways.

We can answer your questions

Well, What do you Know?

Why is gold found with quartz?

Gold is transported though the Earth’s crust dissolved in hot fluids made up of silicon,

iron, sulfur and other elements. The fluids force their way from a hot, high pressure

environment to lower pressure, cooler layers in the crust usually through fractures

and faults in the rock. As the fluid cools, the gold crystalizes along with silicon diox-

ide (quartz) and the other elements present.

Silica and oxygen are the Earth’s most common elements making up a total of about

70% of the Earth’s mass so they are in significant enough quantities to make up the

majority of the hot fluid. Gold and quartz are deposited at nearly the same tempera-

tures therefore often crystallize together.

Why look for black sand?

Specific gravity is the density of material in relationship to water. Black sand is made

up of materials such as iron and magnetite with specific gravity of 5—11 (5-11 times

denser than water) so they collect at the bottom of a stream much better than silica

sand (specific gravity of 2.6.) Pyrite or fools gold has a specific gravity of 4.95—5.10

Gold has a specific gravity of 19.3 which means it is 19.3 times denser than water.

Most often the dense minerals are black in color so “black sand” refers to the color of

the heavies. Once you find black sand you have found where the dense materials

start to collect. The problem?...once you have lots of black sand you want to get rid

of it to separate out the shiny yellow.
