AEC Hackathon
A first for the Architecture, Engineering, Construction Industry, the AEC Hackathon is a non-profit event that creates on-the-spot teams of technologists and industry stakeholders to shape the future of our built environment. The hackathon provides a playful, exploratory environment where disruption and creative ideas are the essential tools for innovation. The AEC community faces fresh new problems that urgently need brilliant minds to solve them.

This semester Laney College has launched a pilot class called "Digital Fabrication." This class is an exploration into the growing industry that is referred to as Digital Fabrication or Advanced Manufacturing. Students have been brought together from multiple disciplines to design, fabricate and assemble a structure with the use of CNC robotics that will be installed on campus. The course is collaborating with multiple industry partners in order to provide students with the richest experience possible. Lessons learned from this class will be utilized to design and create similar courses and potentially an entire program focused on Digital Fabrication. dFab Net (Digital Fabrication Network) is a rapidly growing and innovative organization designed to create a strong community of design professionals, researchers, digital fabricators, and software/ hardware tool providers discussing and exploring Better Ways of Building through Digital Fabrication. We are raising the general understanding and acceptance of Digital Fabrication techniques, and providing people access to resources and knowledge. dFab Net is a not-for-profit organization which aims to promote information technology, research and innovation in manufacturing for its members and their customers. Our objectives are to: The following key stakeholders are already officially represented: Autodesk, Cut My Timber, IDEAbuilder, Kreysler & Associates, Matsys, Robert McNeel & Associates, Topocast, California College of the Arts, University of Texas Schools, and Institute for Computational Design at the University of Stuttgart.
