Thank you. Once again, NYIT has enjoyed another successful year as a leading 21st-century institution of higher learning, bringing access to opportunity and real-world career education to thousands of students around the world. Your commitment to our mission reinforces the notion that know-ledge, more so than capital or physical labor, is the fuel that powers the 21st-century engine of progress. Educated minds with the ability to harness technology across interdisciplinary fields—those very minds who earn their degrees from NYIT campuses in New York, China, Vancouver, and the Middle East—are those who will provide the solutions and ideas to sustain our rapidly shrinking world.

During the 2009-2010 academic year, NYIT experienced solid growth and maturity worldwide with the opening of new buildings, the graduation of more than 4,000 students from our cam-puses, and the launch of a 21st-century core curriculum designed to promote a global, interdisci-plinary mindset. We have made promises and kept them, offering real-world experiences for NYIT students while improving the services and facilities at our physical campuses.

NYIT’s commitment to being global is not confined to our campuses. Being a global univer-sity is also represented by our Center for Global Health sending faculty and medical students, along with engineering students, to Ghana to assist local communities. It is represented by our School of Architecture and Design sending students and faculty to South America to work with their peers at the University of Chile as well as to Egypt, Italy, and the Netherlands ... and NYIT co-hosting a world-class conference on green energy in China, and in welcoming a dozen Chinese professors to New York so they can experience NYIT, American education, and help us build bridges and bonds for future collaboration. Our vision was further realized when 138 students from NYIT-Nanjing traveled to New York to study at our Manhattan campus as several New York-based students traveled to Nanjing. Meanwhile, our online and distributed learning classrooms connect students across our sites in real time to facilitate discussions that reflect global thinking.

Today’s NYIT students are greatly different than the ones who entered our classrooms even a generation ago. Having been born into a world in which communications technology has already taken root, they do not recognize the limits once imposed on us by traditional borders and physical location. As educators, the role of all of us at NYIT is to help them achieve competency on a professional level and to better understand political and cultural differences. The workplace we are preparing our students for is indeed global, and to compete and suc-ceed, graduates must be of the world, having had the opportunities to interact with and im-merse themselves in other cultures.

Your contributions make all of this—and so much more—possible. Donations to NYIT have paved the way for students to become the innovators, leaders, and visionaries of tomorrow in such areas as medical research, technology, commerce, communications, architecture, engineering, and education. Your generous support is visible not only in their achievements, but across the full scope of advancements made possible by NYIT faculty, alumni, and the rest of our community. On behalf of our 15,000 students worldwide, thank you.

Sincerely,Edward Guiliano, Ph.D.President

When a team from New York Institute of Technology traveled to Ghana during the summer of 2010, its mission was two-fold: medical students and faculty would address the immediate health concerns of villagers in rural West Africa while engineer-ing students and faculty would investigate the provision of clean water there.

The interdisciplinary team, tackling pressing issues half a world away, provided a glimpse into NYIT’s growing reputation as a globally engaged university, providing a broad-based career education for gradu-ates and undergraduates looking to pros-per in the 21st century.

Sponsoring the trip was NYIT’s Center for Global Health, which attracts students from an array of disciplines to explore health issues from many perspectives. In the case of intestinal illness in Africa, the solution included symptomatic treatment, education on hygiene, and initiatives to im-prove sanitation and water quality. NYIT’s Engineers Without Borders chapter facili-tated the latter project.

“You bring all the different com-

ponents in, and discuss the situa-

tion from your own perspective,”

says Edward Cho, D.O., assistant

director of the Center for Global

Health and assistant profes-

sor of emergency medicine at

NYIT’s College of Osteopathic

Medicine (NYCOM). “Health

problems can be solved in mul-

tiple ways.”

The expedition to Ghana was

one highlight in a year that saw

NYIT deepen its commitment to global

education, develop stronger ties with

local communities, use online courses and

teleconferencing technology to expand its

reach, employ high- and low-tech solutions to

“green” its campuses and surrounding com-

munities, and redesign its core curriculum

to empower students with the tools they’ll

need to succeed as professionals. It was also

a year that saw cross-country runner Nicho-

las Koiyet named East Coast Conference

runner of the year, and one that witnessed

increased involvement by alumni—both on

and off campus—as NYIT graduates provid-

ed students with internships and mentoring,

as well as connections in the marketplace to

help launch new careers.

About 4,000 graduates of NYIT’s seven

campuses (Old Westbury and Manhattan

in New York; Vancouver, British Columbia;

Nanjing, China; and Bahrain, Abu Dhabi, and

Jordan in the Middle East) celebrated in the

months of May and June 2010 when they

received their diplomas. All told, the more

than 15,000 undergraduate, graduate, and

professional students who pursued their

studies at NYIT in 2009-2010 became more

interconnected, thanks to the university’s

distributed learning (DL) system, videocon-

ferencing facilities, and a new online strat-

egy embracing social media as a communi-

cations tool.

“Today, our students come to us as

digital natives, citizens of a land with no

information sovereigns, much less borders,”

President Edward Guiliano, Ph.D., told

faculty and staff at the September 2010

annual convocation to mark the beginning

of the new academic year. “The challenge

of 21st-century education is to globalize our

knowledge, our thinking, our arguments, and

our experience.”

You can catch a glimpse of this 21st-cen-

tury educational mindset in the DL class-

rooms at Harry Schure Hall on NYIT’s

Old Westbury campus, where a professor

teaches amid three screens that show class-

rooms full of students at offsite NYIT loca-

tions. Cameras and microphones capture

the lecture and student responses on Long

Island, while students attending classes in

similar classrooms at two of NYIT’s other six

campuses can participate.

These high-tech DL facilities can link Old

Westbury to a classroom 28 miles away at

Broadway and 61st Street in Manhattan, or

halfway around the world in Nanjing, China.

Gabrielle Dubey, a hospitality manage-

ment major, took Hospitality 101 in a DL

classroom in Old Westbury while Assistant

Professor Robert Koenig, Ph.D., taught the

material from a Manhattan classroom. She

says Koenig talked to both groups of stu-

dents as if they were in the same location.

“We took notes as if the professor was

standing there,” says Dubey. And if she

wanted to talk to him one-to-one, she’d

move closer to the camera after the lecture

ended to chat.

outcomes for the goals laid out in the institu-

tion’s strategic plan, noted that in 2009-2010,

200 NYIT students took a course at a cam-

pus other than their own.

“These metrics help us gauge our prog-

ress,” says Harriet Arnone, Ph.D., vice presi-

dent for planning and assessment. “They

help us move the ball down the field and get

us where we want to go.”

In addition, the scorecard reported that

4.5 percent of NYIT students took online

classes as their professors developed cours-

es that reach students across the country

and around the world. This marks a signifi-

cant step toward reaching the goal of having

25 percent of courses online by the 2013-

2014 academic year.

For Assistant Professor Frank Zeman,

Eng.Sc.D., and his online graduate class in

energy conservation analysis, students read

textbooks, completed homework assign-

ments, and participated in discussions on

Blackboard’s online course management

platform. In one assignment, students used

a computer program developed by the U.S.

Department of Energy to analyze a building’s

energy consumption.

Zeman says online courses are particularly

popular among students who are earning

their graduate degrees while holding down

full-time jobs.

“It’s successful, and it’s convenient,” says

Zeman. “Most of the postings on Blackboard

come between 10 p.m. and midnight. So it’s

quite useful for students who are working

and don’t have time during the day to devote

to coming to class.”

Online learning has also found its place

in the School of Education. Dean Michael

Uttendorfer, Ed.D., teaches a graduate course

in instructional technology as part of a pro-

gram that is delivered completely online. The

course uses a webinar tool called Elluminate,

which allows the instructor and student to

participate in real time, using simple voice and

video equipment linked to the computer.

Each Wednesday at 8 p.m., Uttendorfer

and his students go online to discuss the

readings and materials assigned for the class.

In one session, they learn how to make the

most of electronic Smartboards, devices

found in many public school classrooms (as

well as in NYIT’s own classrooms) that con-

nect to the Internet and display digital mate-

rial. The course also teaches students how to

create a voice-over on a PowerPoint presen-

tation and how to use Jing software to cap-

ture images from their computer screens.

Special applications-sharing software allows

Uttendorfer to connect with his students’ desk-

tops so he can personally help them navigate

the rapidly changing digital world.

“We have a whole series of tools to use,”

says Uttendorfer.

The online offerings are part of the School

of Education’s transition to an all-graduate

program, which has expanded to include

courses leading to teacher certification in the

fields of secondary mathematics and science.

Demand for such teachers remains strong,

and NYIT, with its wealth of expertise, stands

well-positioned to train educators in those

fields. Earlier this year, NYIT was chosen

by the New York State Department of Ed-

ucation to train New York City high school

teachers who instruct in the disciplines of

science, technology, engineering, and math-

ematics, the so-called “STEM” fields. The

is an interdisciplinary effort among

faculty in the School of Education

and the School of Engineering and

Computing Sciences.

“We have the faculty to make a

difference here,” says Uttendorfer.

Being literate in the digital world

is among the competencies students

will acquire in NYIT’s revamped core

curriculum, which was piloted in 2009-

2010 and introduced to all incoming students

in the fall of 2010. The core places emphasis

on math and science, promotes interdisciplinary

study, and focuses on writing and verbal com-

munications. Students examine the foundations

of inquiry and the scientific process, providing a

solid grounding for subsequent academic work

in their majors.

“We’ve made sure the courses within NYIT

are connected intellectually, and that the

skills learned in one course are reinforced in

another,” says Provost and Vice President for

Academic Affairs Richard Pizer, Ph.D. “We’ve

made a conscious attempt to look at course

progression and the reinforcement of learn-

ing outcomes, so there is a greater connection

between the core courses and one’s major.”

Nicholas Bloom, Ph.D., director of the core

curriculum and associate professor of social

science, teaches the Foundations of Inquiry

class in a blended format, with every two

hours of classroom instruction supplement-

ed by one hour online in which students sign

onto Blackboard to view multimedia presen-

tations and engage in online discussions.

Bloom says NYIT’s College of Arts and

Sciences has developed an online template

for all NYIT faculty to customize their courses.

He adds all the core pilot courses went well

in 2009-2010 and were fine-tuned for the

launch this fall.

“It’s important to get students comfortable

with the technology,” says Bloom. “And these

courses show the importance of working

across disciplines.”

Meanwhile, the School of Management’s

faculty members are working to trans-

form NYIT’s undergraduate and graduate

management programs, infusing the curricu-

lum with experiential learning, professional

enrichment workshops and seminars, and

community service projects that promote

civic responsibility.

Experiential learning took place in a

variety of settings in 2009-2010. More NYIT

students than ever found internships and

learned on the job. Others addressed real-

world problems in courses that included

in-person and virtual consultations with cor-

porations looking for solutions to problems.

Others participated in NYIT’s annual

Corporate Challenge—a competition that

this year featured the Swiss watchmaker,

Frederique Constant. In December 2009,

company officials held a master class at

NYIT in which CEO Peter Stas challenged

250 students to come up with new ideas for

the company’s U.S. market involving social

media and marketing.

Teams of two to five students worked on

presentations, with NYIT faculty selecting

the three top teams. In March, those teams

made their presentations in a webinar to the

Swiss executives. One member of the winning

team—graduate student Prachi Khetani—won

a trip to Geneva for a two-week internship.

The management information sciences

major traveled to Switzerland in July, carrying

out a market research project in which she

compared Frederique Constant watches

with their competition. She says her time at

NYIT has helped build her self-confidence

in the corporate world.

“I’ve learned to make presentations and

now have the confidence to talk in front of

anybody,” says Khetani, who came to NYIT

from Mumbai, India. “I used to be a little shy,

but now I know I can do it.”

Gaining real-world experience is part of

the curriculum for students in the School of

Health Professions and NYCOM, both of

which saw an increase in the caliber and num-

ber of students applying for their programs.

At NYCOM, there were 17 applications for

every seat in the first-year class. In the School

of Health Professions, more than 1,700 appli-

cants applied for 52 spaces in NYIT’s program

to train physician assistants.

Michael Suprenant, a third-year physician

assistant student, says the combination of

classroom academics and clinical rotations in

area hospitals, including a stint at the inten-

sive care unit at Winthrop-University Hospi-

tal in Mineola, has prepared him well.

“After two tough years in the classroom, it’s

really rewarding to hit the rotations and work

with patients,” he says. “It confirms that this is

what I want to do.”

At NYCOM, a three-year, $1 million

grant, awarded in September 2009 by the

federal Health Careers Opportunity Pro-

gram, will help disadvantaged students

who want to study osteopathic medicine

at the technology-infused college. As part

of the grant, NYCOM offers workshops to

undergraduate NYIT students looking to

apply to medical school. The grant will also

expand the placement of NYCOM stu-

dents in local hospitals that provide primary

care to vulnerable populations, such as the

Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead,

N.Y., and Nassau University Medical Center

in East Meadow, N.Y.

“We are committed to having a diverse

enrollment, and we want our students to rep-

resent the population at large,” says NYCOM

Dean Thomas Scandalis (D.O. ’87). “The col-

lege’s mission is to emphasize primary care in

rural and underserved urban areas. Gradu-

ates tend to return to their home communi-

ties, and for many, those areas lack adequate

health care.”

While medical students learn and work

in regional health care centers, students in

NYIT’s School of Architecture and Design

have been carrying out projects in New York

and around the globe.

In the fall of 2009, several students trav-

eled to Valparaiso, Chile, to work on a joint

design project with students at the Uni-

versity of Chile, drawing up plans for the

Pacific Ocean waterfront. In the school’s

summer abroad program, undergraduates

traveled to Egypt, the Netherlands, and

Italy to work on additional projects. Closer

to home, students collaborated on a com-

prehensive design of a dance studio in

Queens, N.Y., and competed in the Build a

Better Burb design contest on Long Island

to reinvent the suburban landscape. In Free-

port, N.Y., they created plans for a transit-

oriented project in the seaside village where

vacationers would hop a ferry to Fire Island

and commuters ride the Long Island Railroad

to their jobs in downtown Manhattan.

Architecture and design students also

collaborated on a project in which they de-

signed the interior for a private equity firm in

midtown Manhattan.

“The firm came to us and was looking for

ideas,” says Associate Dean Frank Mruk.

“There’s such energy among our students to

work on projects like this. It’s important for

them to understand that they can form their

own project and bring it to completion.”

Community partnerships were a hallmark

of the 2009-2010 year. In Nassau County,

N.Y., NYIT is collaborating with the Long

Island Power Authority, the Jericho Water

District, and the state of New York on a pro-

ject to install solar panels at a regional water

facility. NYIT engineering students and fac-

ulty will design the system, which will help

power the village of Jericho’s pump stations

and the district office. NYIT students will

also monitor the system’s operation.

“The partnership between NYIT and the

Jericho Water District is ideal as it enriches

our students’ education through real-world

applications, and teaches them to serve the

surrounding community,” says Nada Anid,

Ph.D., dean of NYIT’s School of Engineering

and Computing Sciences.

This community initiative represented the

university’s campaign to promote energy con-

servation and a sustainable future—both on

and off campus. In April 2010, NYIT hosted

its first Think Green global conference in Nan-

jing, China, attracting international experts

who engaged in discussions about potential

sustainable solutions for the planet.

On a more local level, NYIT received a

$125,000 grant from the New York State

Energy Research and Development Authority

to install solar panels on an NYIT administra-

tion building at NYIT-Old Westbury. A grant for

$50,000 will retrofit three NYCOM buildings

with more efficient lighting. In the renovated

Theobald Science Center, energy consump-

tion was cut through increased exterior insu-

Angela Montemarano (M.S. ’00) gives back to NYIT by helping

young professionals land their first jobs

sensors to reduce lighting usage.

One of the most visible green initiatives is

NYIT’s bike share program at the Manhattan

and Old Westbury campuses. In Old West-

bury, 40 bikes are available to students as

well as faculty and staff members at bike

racks around campus. For a nominal yearly

fee, riders receive a bike helmet and key

to the bike locks, so the parked bikes are

shared by those participating in the program.

There are also two racks at the SUNY-Old

Westbury campus, three miles away, where

480 NYIT students live in residential halls.

“It’s a great way to get around the Old

Westbury campus,” says Michael Burnett,

associate dean of campus life and director

of student leadership. “It also reduces our

carbon footprint because fewer people are

driving around campus.”

In Manhattan, there is one rack with six

bikes, which students can use for recreation,

such as riding around Central Park (one

block from campus) or along Manhattan’s

West Side on the 12-mile trail from Battery

Park to Inwood.

Moving NYIT forward in the 21st-century is

a team effort that includes students, faculty,

staff, and alumni. And in 2009-2010, NYIT

alumni stepped up in major ways.

David Hickey (B.S. ’85), chief executive of-

ficer and chairman of the Lumeta Corp., a

New Jersey-based software firm, grew up in

Farmingdale, N.Y., and followed his brothers,

John (B.S. ’77) and Tom (B.S. ’80), to NYIT.

After serving on the School of Management’s

Executive Council, he decided to donate

$2 million in hardware and network-security

software for student training and research.

Lumeta’s IPsonar software allows NYIT

engineering students to analyze the connec-

tivity between assets and networks as well

as uncover risk patterns that could compro-

mise the system’s security. It also provides

a platform for student research on new

network vulnerabilities and finding ways to

improve cyber security.

Hickey predicts these senior projects will

someday lead to innovations that have com-

mercial application.

“This is a real win-win,” says Hickey. “The

students are working on very relevant pro-

jects that could lead to something.”

More alumni came back to campus to par-

ticipate in conferences, and others helped

launch NYIT students into professional

careers. While many alumni posted jobs in

their companies on NYIT’s electronic job

board, CareerNet, or visited campuses for the

annual career fairs, some mentored students

for their first professional interviews for an

internship or entry-level position.

NYIT’s internship certificate program—

three one-hour sessions of pre-professional

training—lets students know what is to be

expected of them during their internships

and how to position themselves to employ-

ers. Angela Montemarano (M.S. ’00), a human

resources generalist at St. Francis Hospital in

Port Washington, N.Y., came back to campus

last year for the Backpack to Briefcase semi-

nar, in which alumni teach strategies to help

young professionals.

Montemarano, who worked in the NYIT

Office of Career Services while earning

her degree, also held mock interviews with

physical therapy students and provided

them with feedback.

“My career started at NYIT, so I feel the

need to give back,” she says. “It’s a great way

to stay connected.”

NYIT students travel to other countries to learn

about cultures, expand their global mindset, and use their

education to provide vital assistance. In July 2010, medical

and engineering students visited Oworobong, Ghana

(below), and devised plans to provide potable water to a

local health clinic, built a pharmacy and medical supply room,

and conducted research in the areas of water sanitation,

maternal health, and hygiene. In addition, the 2009-2010

academic year saw architecture students traveling to Egypt,

Italy, and the Netherlands to study designs, and a student

exchange program between NYIT campuses in New York

and Nanjing gave students in both hemispheres the chance

to experience the sights and sounds of foreign cultures.

Thank You For Investing in Our Future5+ Consecutive Years ●2-4 Consecutive Years ●* Member of NYIT Board of Trustees

Thank you for your generosity to New York Institute of Technology during this past academic year. Your contributions communicated a fervent message of support to our students. Among their many benefits, your gifts provided scholarships, helped to renovate labs, and made possible access to oppor-tunity for thousands of NYIT students worldwide. We extend our deepest appreciation to you, our alumni, trustees, parents, faculty, staff, and many friends, for giving our students the chance to achieve their highest potential through education.

Attracting world-class faculty is key to NYIT’s mission of providing

real-world education to our global

body of students. In summer 2010, we

welcomed Patricia Chute, Ed.D., as

the dean of NYIT’s School of Health

Professions. With more than 20 years

of experience (including serving as a

dean), she is an expert in audiology,

specializes in cochlear implants, and has

traveled the world offering assistance to

hearing-impaired patients.

Smile, Steve. NYIT Magazine’s new series of online

video profiles at nyit.edu/magazine

demonstrate our latest efforts to show-

case NYIT alumni and highlight their

successes (pictured is Stephen Panari-

ello [B.F.A. ’88, M.A. ’93] getting ready

for his closeup). The project comple-

ments alumni outreach efforts that also

include our inCircle social networking

site, e-newsletters, and a revamped

online presence at nyit.edu/alumni.

NYIT Athletics continue to improve on

and off the playing field. In 2010, two new teams—men’s

and women’s tennis—were added to our intercollegiate

sports programs. In addition, we began construction

on the new Bears Cave facility between the baseball

and softball fields at NYIT-Old Westbury. Furthermore,

student-athletes donated countless hours to community

service in 2009-2010, including the Ronald McDonald

House, Make a Wish Foundation, and Toys for Tots.

From Amman to the Big Apple, NYIT

students worldwide are given opportunities to inter-

act with real-world professionals and witness first-

hand how educational theories are applied in the

global workplace. In November 2009, for example,

students from NYIT-Amman (below) visited Ipsos, a

top global research firm, as part of their experiential

learning program through the School of Management.

NYIT students, faculty, and staff participated in various commu-

nity service projects throughout the

2009-2010 academic year. At NYIT’s

campuses, they organized events for

Haiti earthquake relief, Relay for

Life in conjunction with the American

Cancer Society (left), and the Alliance

for Lupus Walk. In addition, students

at NYIT-Bahrain raised $12,000 at

their fourth annual carnival in support

of children’s charities.

The NYIT Auditorium on Broadway debuted on Oct. 15, 2009, and has since been in the spotlight for its distinguished conferences, community events, film festivals, and movie pre-mieres. Visit nyit.edu/aob for more information.

NYIT retrofitted a dozen new smart classrooms at

its New York campuses in 2009-2010, allowing profes-

sors and students to interact with their peers around

the world. Similar technology is also implemented in key

student-centered locations, such as the Office of Career

Services (above), which gives employers and students the

opportunity to interact using high-definition equipment.

Moreover, the generous support of NYIT donors helps pave the way for new technologies designed to facilitate learning and enhance student services worldwide. Thank you once again for your support.
