If the only prayer you said in your whole life was, "thank you," that would suffice.
~Meister Eckhart
Thank you is the prayer that we have felt and expressed over and over again since
February when Cyndi (my wife) and I found out that we would be moving to Lake
Orion to join the staff and the faith community at LOUMC for this new and
exciting adventure. We have continued to offer this prayer of gratitude as I/we
spoken of your acts of kindness, the love that you demonstrate, not to mention the
warm and inviting spirit that is evident in your lives as a people of faith as well as
the beautiful home that you have provided for us to live in. So thanks in a big
time way for inviting us to be a part of LOUMC and the future story that will
unfold as we discover the places and experiences where God’s presence becomes
visible. I mentioned the first Sunday that I was with you that Cyndi and I have
been married for 18 years and that we have two boys (Dylan – 13 and Braeden –
11). I also shared with you that our youngest son, Braeden has autism. Cyndi
and I have always been transparent with those in our life about our journey with
autism. Being that we have discovered a new community of people who now are
our family we feel strongly that you also need to be aware of who we are as a
family and some of the experiences that we face because of the needs of Braeden.
So here are a few things that might be helpful for you to know:
Braeden was diagnosed with autism when he was about 2 years old.
Braeden struggles at times with being in large groups of people
As he becomes overwhelmed by any particular environment, he may make
verbal utterances, flap his hands, bring his hands to his face and even squeeze
Cyndi or I.
Braeden has a service dog named Kenai. Kenai is a constant calming
presence for him. In addition, in the event that Braeden runs off, Kenai is
capable of tracking and finding him. As a general rule, it is best to ask either
Cyndi or myself if there is a desire to “pet” Kenai before doing so.
Braeden’s verbal language is very limited. He is capable of communicating
his most immediate needs or desires.
Braeden is passionate about anything that has to do with Disney and/or
Veggie Tales. The best weeks of Braeden’s life was the week that we spent
at Disney World in Orlando 2 years ago.
Braeden much like all of us just simply appreciates knowing that he is loved
and accepted
Though our life as a family may look a bit different because of Braeden’s needs,
we still enjoy life, good friends and good times with others. Having said that,
please feel free to ask us any questions that you might have. We trust that we are
loved and accepted as we are. We look forward to the journey that we share
together with our new family in Lake Orion.
Lots of love and peace to you all! God loves you and so do I. Pastor John
Dragon Boat Racing
is coming back
to Lake Orion United Methodist Church
What is Dragon Boat Racing?.....
400 Meters of PURE Adrenaline Rush!!!
And a chance to directly impact the lives of
people in our community.
Dragon Boat Racing
is a great sport for men and women of all ages and abilities. Anyone
can do it and have fun! Twenty paddlers move in unison to the beat of
the drummer. It’s all about the Teamwork! Being synchronized is more
important than strength. A perfectly synchronized team will almost
always beat a stronger, less coordinated team.
The first $45 of the money each participant raises goes to pay their pad-
dler registration fee. The remainder of the pledges collected will be
placed in the LOUMC Community Assistance Fund which we use to help
people in the congregation and in the local community that are struggling
financially due to job loss, medical issues or other circumstances. Last
year, we raised over $1700 for our fund.

Dear Church Family...Dennis and I want to thank you for your most wonder-
ful Retirement Celebration Weekend. Our minds are truly filled with a vast
array of images, moments, gestures, skits, worship, brunch, gifts, hugs, laugh-
ter, a banner, a Costco cake and some gentle tears to remind us of you all as
you sent us on our way into this new chapter called Retirement. We are
settling in well and want to thank you for your many gifts: the generous Love
Offering, the beautiful prayer quilt in soft greens, purples and pinks, the
enormous memory photo album, the children’s gifts (tiger’s eye necklace,
mosaic cross garden stone, card and banner), the gift cards to eateries, the
many, many notes for the “Moments With Marge” binder, and the three lovely
purses from the rummage sale! Most of all we want to thank you for your
love, support and sharing of our lives with us from 2002 to 2013. We will
think of you often and invite you to give us a call if you come to the Columbus
area. May God continue to bless you and to bless others through you!
In Christ’s Love, Pastor Marge and Dennis
Dear Disciples...Thank you so much for the hilarious video takeoff on “Is It
I?” I loved all your deep pondering and soul searching. Thanks for the dvd
so I can watch it again and show it to others. I do love the “Last Supper”
artwork/model/reproduction. It looks great on the “server” that goes with our
dining room table. Very nice! A perfect reminder of all your work to make
those Maundy Thursdays so meaningful to the people who came. You always
came through! I have many great memories to savor.
Much love,
Marge
In Thanks

PRAYERS AND SQUARES MINISTRY
Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers and friendship
through the months of heart health problems. The prayers
must have worked — I feel much better in spite of three
hospital visits this year! Although this note is a half a
decade late, I wanted to thank everyone for the beautiful,
beautiful quilt. I used to quilt so I recognize beauty when I see it. You are all
such wonderful, thoughtful ladies (men?). Judy Wright
Dear Ones...Thank you so much for my prayer quilt! It has meant a great deal
to me with all the prayers said as my friends tied a knot and said a prayer. My
back is doing much better and I have the brace off part of the day. It soon will
be off all day. Chris still sleeps with his prayer quilt and brother Marks’s too.
Fondly, Paulie Egner
Dear Pastor Larry, Church Members and Friends...Thank you so much for the
beautiful, healing prayer quilt that you made for my beloved Richard. He loved
it. I put it over him every day until he went to be with our Lord. Sadly, he only
got to use it 2-3 weeks before he left his earthly body and traded it in for a
heavenly, healthy, healed and whole body. But he enjoyed it and the love that
every knot tied represented. God bless all who participated in making the
prayers quilt. Thank you for all your love and prayers for Richard’s healing.
Sadly, it wasn’t to be, so please keep me in your prayers as my faith has taken
a terrible hit and I’m having a very hard time dealing with all this. In God’s
love and the love of Jesus Christ, His Son.
Beth Cagle-Webster
WORSHIP AND THE ARTS offers a heartfelt Thank You to all who helped
with our recent Rummage Sale. So much time and so many hands donating,
helping to sort, price and sell all the good stuff, and helping with set-up and
clean-up. God is at work here through all of you...THANK YOU, THANK
YOU! Nancy Ochoa
To my church family—I don't know how to express my feelings except thank
you for all the many cards, visits and calls. To the Stephen Ministry and one
special person (you know who you are) you are very special and many thanks.
If you need help please call the Stephen Ministry as they can help you. Many
thanks to all and bless you. Norma Remer
Larry’s Link Lines
You never know what to expect…
For the last two weeks on Sunday morning, both Pastor John Ball and I have shown up
in matching shirts! People have rightly harassed us about it, and we have assured
people there was no coordination involved! It’s kind of gotten into my head a bit,
though, and I’ve been thinking about what color shirt I have that John is unlikely to
wear… but I’m going to try not to think about it. Can pastoral fashion lightning strike
three times? You never know what to expect.
Last week Joe Rowden (“Mr.” Rowden to me) showed up at announcement time in
crazy swim duds and an inner tube to give me, and Pastor John, paddling lessons for
the Dragon Boat. Rob Charlton joined us in “the boat,” and Greg Heyboer was called
upon to spray us with mist to simulate the lake in our face! Between that and Amy
Lieblein with her Viking helmet and drum, you never know what to expect.
Last Sunday we saw a video presentation from Chad Griffith who recently went with
our middle school students on their mission trip to Appalachia. He shared a moving
testimony about how, from start to finish, that trip helped him to re-evaluate his
relationship with God and to assess the firmness of his spiritual foundation. Two
weeks ago, we honored Fern Myers at 11:00 for her long and fruitful service in leading
our Divorce Care group. She witnessed to us about the power of the program, and
already we are having conversations with people about being future leaders for that
program! You never know what to expect.
During Tuesday’s closing assembly for VBS, our students, youth leaders, and adult
leaders received an in-person visit from Dr. Kashala from the Democratic Republic of
Congo. He came to LOUMC to report on the results of our VBS giving from 2005.
The VBS offering from that year went toward mosquito netting (to save people from
contracting Malaria), hot water bottles (used as infant incubators in an environment
without regular electricity), a generator part (which allowed for emergency electricity),
and an all-wheel drive truck (for reliable transportation on unreliable roads). Thanks to
that offering, he reported, many lives have been saved over the last eight years. From
one good deed, from one generous gift, you never know what to expect.
Every week, every Sunday, every day, every moment, seems to be yet another
opportunity for a surprising, unexpected God-happening! From the laughter and love
of our life together, to the wisdom of God’s word shared in worship, to the grace and
growth experienced in small groups,
you never know what to expect.
But we know to expect something, for our God is an amazing and awesome God.
Don’t let yourself – or your family, friends, and neighbors – miss even a moment of it!
Love in our surprising Savior,
Pastor Larry

Greetings from Bethlehem!
Thanks for the news that you will be partnering with me in a covenant
relationship. Congregations like yours is what keeps the light of Christ shining
in the US and around the world. Thank you, your pastors, the United Methodist
Women and all other groups and members for what you are doing for the
advance of God's Kingdom. As you know, Brenda and I serve at Bethlehem
Bible College where I am the Dean of Students and Brenda is a Development
Officer. We also pastor a congregation in East Jerusalem.
At the Bible College, I am also the director of the Shepherd Society which is
the humanitarian arm of the College. The SS provides food and medical aid to
the needy, unemployed and uninsured. We also have a program called Family
to Family Sponsorship. A family in the US, Canada or Europe can sponsor a
needy family in Bethlehem for $50 a month. We are also helping in job
creation and micro projects. We do our best to respond to the commandment
of Christ to stand in solidarity with the oppressed. At Christmas and Easter we
give food parcels to needy families and widows and we distribute toys to many
of Bethlehem's children. We are able to do all these ministries due to the
generosity of God's people. Both Bethlehem Bible College and SS are advance
projects with the United Methodist Church.
In the past three months I led two mission trips from Bethlehem Bible College
to north Jordan to minister to Syrian Refugees in that country. It was a great
blessing to serve Christ among the needy refugees.
Soon I will send you a ministry update that my wife and I are working on.
Again, thank you for your support and prayers and blessings to
you and to your people,
Alex Awad, LOUMC Missionary

BABY SHOWER NEWS
It's not too early to be on the "lookout" for baby and toddler clothing on sale
for our 9th annual Red Bird Baby Shower which will be held at a date yet to be
announced in October. Both summer and winter clothing, disposable diapers,
baby wipes, toys, blankets, formula, crib sheets or anything pertaining to a
baby's needs are welcome and much appreciated. The people of Beverly,
Kentucky, also love handmade items. We have a group of members of our
congregation who will deliver our gifts and work at the Red Bird Mission in
the hills of southeastern Kentucky late in October. More information to be
announced soon.
CLOTHING SHORTAGE CRITICAL
at RED BIRD COMMUNITY STORE
It's shocking to walk into the receiving warehouse and see the small amount
of unsorted items. Jan Mosley, Manager and an employee working in the
Community Store for 31 years said, "It is very rare to see the warehouse this
empty for so long."
Sales have continued the downward trend in the worsening local economy
forcing a layoff of two clerks. Craig Dial led the Community Store to its
pinnacle of 11 employees and almost $250,000 in annual sales as recent as
2008. In spite of good management and presentation of items sold, sales
dropped to just $145,000 last year forcing the reduction of staff to five
employees.
Craig gave his perspective saying, "With fuel and transportation costs high
and uncertain, both the donations and purchasing are the lowest we have seen
in over 15 years. Just like other nonprofits, we are feeling the effect of
the economic situation demonstrated by the lack of donations and the lower
purchasing power."
If you are interested in shipping donations to the Community Store, address
packages to Red Bird Mission, Community Store, 70 Queendale Ctr, Beverly,
KY 40913. If you are planning on delivering your donations, please contact
us in advance for hours and days of the week that the store is open.
