Appointment of Deputy Principal Lawrie Cresp has announced his retirement from
teaching, effective from the end of this term.
Lawrie has provided outstanding service to Oakbank
Area School and other schools around the state across
a long and distinguished career. We wish him well in his
retirement.
His humour, practicality and kindness will be missed by
students, staff and parents.
It is my pleasure to announce that Kirsty Rogers has
accepted the offer of the Deputy Principal position
after a comprehensive selection process involving a
range of quality applicants.
Kirsty brings a wealth of experience in student
wellbeing, career development and school
administration to the position.

80th Birthday Celebrations This week marked the 80th birthday of the school
after the combining of the Balhannah and Oakbank
primary schools in 1938.
There will be an opportunity for the community and
Alumni to celebrate our birthday milestone later in
the year.
Please join the Oakbank Area School Alumni page
to network with other ex-students and parents so
that we can keep you in touch with our birthday
plans.
Flinders University Visit Please see the report in this Newsletter from Sarah Hill
who, with a number of our Year 11 and 12 students
attended Flinders University to use their facilities and
explore the opportunity for studies at the Tertiary level.
These visits help normalise the University environment
and help students understand that further education is
achievable and exciting.
Student Representative Council Summit Last Friday our SRC was involved with SRCs from across
the Adelaide region in developing leadership potential.
Students worked through a process to identify their
focus areas and map a path to achieve their goals.
The SRC is an integral part of student voice and this
training is important in developing their potential.

Primary Girls Football Comp On Wednesday 23 May, eleven grade 5 to 7 girls took
part in q Football competition against other schools in
the area, organised by the Sturt Football club and
played at the Onkaparinga Football Oval.
When I say took part, I should have said nearly won! We
won 3 games and drew another. This put us into the
grand final against Stirling East’s top team who are
coached by a Mt Lofty coach and are a team where
nearly all the girls play together on the weekend. The
grand final was the only game that our girls lost.
The year 7 girls that played were Chrystal Smith
(captain), Abby McGinley, Kaia Smith, Jana Tonkin and
Laila Jackson. The year 6s were Charlotte Casement,
Savannah Baayens, Syaura Erickson-Scott and Hope
Bellchambers-Hamilton. The 5s were Ava Smith and
Jasmin Knott.
Only three girls were allowed to shoot for goals in a
game and were designated by a wrist band. There was
a lot of pressure put onto the coach (Me) as everyone
wanted to be a goal shooter! All girls tried hard and
played well making tackles stick.
Chrystal (Buddy) Smith was brilliant at breaking tackles
and heading flat out towards the goals. In all games we
had plenty of ball getters as the girls were not afraid to
get into the packs or on the ground to win the ball.
Sophie Yeates and Brittney Osborne helped with the
Coaching at lunch times. Also a thanks to Jo Casement
for being First Aid (wiping away more tears than blood),
and Janet Mattingly for Goal Umpiring. Thanks also to the
parents who came along to watch and support the girls.
It was a great day played in excellent spirits.

Career Choices
It would appear that information for parents is highly
sought after when it comes to helping their children
with their career choices.
For that reason, Oakbank Area School would like to
promote a link developed by My Future, which features
links to articles that provide tips and advice for parents
to assist their child with their career development.

SRC Leadership Day Inquiry Summit Students involved in the OAS SRC attended an Inquiry
Summit and learnt about their leadership characteristics
and planning for and implementing student voice at our
school.
The day was also about meeting other leaders from
other schools and sharing ideas. Oakbank students
focused on uniform redevelopment and a plan for
surveying students around uniform options with a focus
on improvement of the uniform and student compliance
in wearing it.
This will be a focus for SRC this year including our term
planning of activities including a cultural day, SRC sports
competition and a 80s dress up fundraiser.
Kristen Bence & Kerensa Greenfield SRC Coordinators
SRC Planning Session Sub committee groups were working to plan activities
for this term including SRC lunchtime sports, a cultural
day for a charity and a casual clothes dress up
fundraising day for the end of term.

Open Boys AFL On Thursday 17 May a group of male students
ventured down the freeway to compete in a round
robin Open Boys AFL Competition.
This is one of the occasions where OAS and HCCS
collaborate beautifully with each other for the benefit
of our students. With neither school being huge in
numbers, it would be impossible for either to have a
stand alone AFL team.
By collaborating together, OAS had 12 players and
HCCS had 8 players, which are perfect numbers for an
AFL team, thus giving all students the opportunity to
play.
Captains for the day were Kye Sinnott from OAS and
Noah Bell from HCCS.
The competition was held at Glenunga International
High School with Glenunga and Birdwood High
School being the other two schools that we had to
compete against.
The first game was played against Glenunga.
Glenunga were too strong on the day winning 12 goals
8 behinds to 3 goals 3 behinds. Our goal scorers were
Kye Sinnott and Dylan Taylor from OAS and Noah Bell
from HCCS.
Unfortunately we didn't score a goal against Birdwood
kicking 5 behinds to their 6 goals and 8 behinds.
Best players for OAS on the day were Kye Sinnott, Harry
Maider, Tyler Park-Cromie, Seb Watson, Jacob Wilson
and Dylan Taylor. Best player for the team was Zac
Kuiper from HCCS.
A big thank you to the Lucas and Sinnott families and
past student Riley Sinnott for coming down and
supporting the team. Your presence was much
appreciated. Cheers to Mr Lucas for the newsletter
photo's. Also thanks to HCCS PE teacher Josh Lloyd for
his coaching expertise on the day.
Although the scoreboard wasn't in our favour, the boys
can be very proud of the way in which they
represented the school both on and off the playing
arena in such an open and public forum.
Well done to all concerned!

Year 11/12 Biology Excursion to Flinders Uni Yesterday, the Year 11/12 Biology class participated in
two Biotechnology workshops at Flinders University.
This is what they learned (in their own words):
“Enzymes can be used to detect bad bacteria so that
further action can be taken to remove them. We
experimented with “infected” wine to find out what
happens when a specific enzyme is added to it. This
allowed us to determine if the wine sample was
infected or not.”
“We learned about how forensic scientists collect and
analyse DNA samples to solve crimes and also to
conduct paternity testing”
The students were actively engaged, and quickly
mastered the skills to use specialized equipment like
micro-pipettes and the spectrophotometer to analyse
the potentially contaminated wine samples, and used
the gel electrophoresis bath to screen for DNA
matched samples.
They demonstrated excellent team work, and listened
attentively to our expert facilitator Lenny.
Lenny also discussed career and further study
opportunities, sharing her personal story, which has
resulted in her now working as a forensics scientist for
Forensics SA. She was really enthused by our students’
responses and willingness to participate.
It was an excellent day, and I was very proud of the
way our students conducted themselves.
Here are some of their reflections:
“I found performing the experiments helped us
understand the information we were being told”
“It was very ’hands on’ and easy to understand. We
learnt these things using different learning methods,
which helped heaps”
“Both activities were good, they were less boring
because we got to do it ourselves”
“It takes days to get DNA results, not hours like is seen in
TV shows. This is the key to solving cold cases”.
“It has helped me to understand the real-life
applications and importance of biotechnology”
