The Cobra is Smokin

started in early 1943 with the goal o elding three InantryDivisions to be deployed in three echelons.

However, the sheer size o the task in recruiting, training,equipping, and shipping, with a lack o sea transport,ultimately resulted the FEB being one Inantry Division

(Diviso de Inantaria Expedicionria, or 1st DIE orshort), under General Mascarenhas de Moraes, and a ghtersquadron o 25,334 men. Tough small by most Alliedcountry standards it represented a major eort or Brazil.

Te Division comprised the ollowing Inantry Regiments:

1st Inantry Regiment (Sampaio) rom the area o Rio de

Janeiro

6th

Inantry Regiment (Ipiranga) rom the area o SoPaulo

11th Inantry Regiment (iradentes) rom the area o Minas

Gerais

Each Regiment had 3 Battalions, numbered I to III withconsecutively numbered companies or a total o 12 perRegiment with the heavy weapons companies comprising the4th, 8th and 12th.

Each Regiment ormed its own Regimental Combat eam(RC) comprising an Inantry Regiment, a Battalion otowed 105mm Howitzers and an Engineer company rom

the 9th Engineer Battalion. Te Sampiao Regiment had the2nd Artillery and 3rd Engineers, the Ipiranga the 3rd Artilleryand 2nd Engineers and the iradentes the 1st Artillery and1st Engineers.

In addition, the Division had at its disposal the 4th Artillerycomprising towed 155mm Howitzers and the DivisionalReconnaissance Squadron. Te US 751st ank Battalion(Sherman and Stuart tanks) and 894th ank DestroyerBattalion (M10 tank destroyers) were placed under commando the 1st DIE rom time to time, creating a combined armsorce.

FEB in italyTe rst echelon o Brazilian troops arrived in Italy totallyunequipped on 16 July 1944. Tey spent the next twomonths equipping and training nally entering combat on15 September. Units o the Division were initially involved inreconnaissance and clearing operations in uscany, Massarossa,Bozzano, Camaiore, Monte Prano and others.

For the next 45 days the Brazilian rst echelon, whichincluded the 6th Inantry Regiment, parts o the 11th InantryRegiment, one company o engineers, and a platoon rom theReconnaissance Squadron, penetrated orty kilometres intothe Serchio valley. Te 6th Regiment then ought against

German positions in the vicinity o Castelnuovo diGaragnana. Tere they succeeded in surprising and routingunits o the German-trained Italian ascist army (elements othe Monterosa Alpini Division o the Esercito Nazionale

Brazil EntErsthE WarWhen the Japanese attacked the US and Germany ollowedwith its declaration o war, the Germans began to attackBrazilian merchant ships along the Brazilian coast. Tistogether with diplomatic agreements moved Brazil towards

the Allied camp.With the early Axis victories in France and North Arica, theBrazilian bulge became a strategic concern o the US. Navalagreements with the US and Brazilian inclusion in Lend-Lease urther solidied Brazilian inclusion within the Alliedcircle.

Te Brazilian declaration o war was preceded by a political-military agreement with the US on 23 May 1942. Teagreement established the employment o Brazilian troops in

war operations outside o South America. Te US promisednaval support or Brazilian coastline deence and provided aidor the arming and equipping o the Forca Expedicionaria

Brasileira(FEB, Brazilian Expeditionary Force).

ForcaExpEdicionariaBrasilEiraTe FEB was organized as a standard American inantrydivision, complete in all aspects, down to its logistics tail,including postal and banking services. Its manoeuvre unitsincluded the 1st, 6th and 11th Regimental Combat eams(RC), each o about 5,000 men in three battalions plussupporting units. Each battalion consisted o our companieseach.

Made up o regional regiments equipped with German smallarms and French artillery, the FEB had to be totally

reorganized, expanded rom 66,000 to 150,000 men and re-equipped and trained in the American model. Mobilisation

Brazilian Special Rules

Te Brazilian Army went rom a regional militia orce tothe Forca expeditionria Brasiliera(FEB) in a little over ayear. Tis expansion let little time or training and theew ocers available were quickly promoted above theirexperience. Some were lucky enough to have hadadditional training in the US prior to being deployed toItaly.

Once the FEB was ormed and shipped to Italy the Smoking Cobrabecame their motto and when Brazilian troops were cornered andalone, they ought with a new-ound Brazilian pride.

alongside ask Force 45 and Gardiner Force o the US Army,they were pitted against German positions on Monte Castelloand Monte Belvedere. Following these operations, the 1st DIEtook part in the oensive operations into the Po Valley,including the bloody struggle or the town o Montese in1945.

Te Allied advances into the Po Valley saw the Brazilianstaking heavy casualties when teamed with lower rateddivisions, but perormed quite well when paired with thehighly trained 10th US Mountain Division.

By April the FEB was operating independently which resulted

in the surrender o the entire German 148. Inanteriedivisionto the Brazilians at Collecchio, the very same division thathad halted their advance in October. When hostilities endedin Italy the FEB was returned to Brazil.

Generally, the men o the 1st DIE acquitted themselves well,gaining the trust o Italian civilians and combat experience inunamiliar terrain, though at some cost. Tey were proud torepresent their country and o their divisional patch, a snakesmoking a cigar (said to hve stemmed rom German commentssaying that the day Brazilians would join the ghting wouldbe the day snakes started to smoke).

When the 2iC Command Rie team joins a platoon, it mayre-roll all Motivation ests as though it was a CompanyCommand team.

I the Company Command team is Destroyed, the 2iCCommand team may take Company Morale Checks.

Air Observation Aircrat use many o the aircrat rules.However, one o the primary diferences is that the AirObservation Aircrat starts the game on the table andremains there or the rest o the game until it is shot down orchased of, at which point it is permanently removed romthe game.

In the Starting Step o each turn, you reposition your AirObservation Aircrat anywhere on the table (even within16/40cm o riendly troops) when you would position anyother aircrat. I your opponent has air support, they can roll

or Fighter Interception as usual and use this to attempt toshoot your Air Observation Aircrat down instead o intercepting Ground Attack Aircrat.

Te opposing player can re anti-aircrat re at your AirObservation Aircrat at the end o the Shooting Step, aterall other shooting is complete, but just beore aircrat maketheir attacks, just as they can at any other aircrat. Tis isconducted just like ring at Ground-attack Aircrat,including the limits on anti-aircrat guns ability to see over

terrain.A team ring anti-aircrat re must choose between ring atthe Air Observation Aircrat or at Ground-attack Aircrat.

A single team cannot shoot at both in the same turn.

Since the Air Observation Aircrat isnt actually attackinganything, Sel-deence Anti-aircrat Weapons cannot shoot at it.

Te Air Observation Aircrat carries no weapons and cannotmake attacks by itsel. Instead an Air Observation Aircratcounts as an Observer team that can act as the Spottingteam or any artillery platoon that has a Staf team.
