INTRODUCTION

MQ travelling column milling machines with CNC control allow to manufacture great precision

and high productivity pieces. These machines are built with great versatility as a product with

high structural rigidity product to assure a suitable rating in hard working conditions, in rigidity

and precision demand.

The structural main pieces (bed, table, column, vertical carriage, longitudinal carriage and

ram) are pearlitic cast-iron GG30, stabilized and strongly veined.

The guidance of the machine is done on prismatic rectified guides, designed to support

heavy charges, obtaining a high rigidity and a big precision.

The transmission of the longitudinal axis depends on X course of the machine, it can be

done through ballscrews for courses inferior to 10.000 mm. or double pinion – rack system, for

courses upper to 10.000 mm.

The transmission of Z and Y axes are realized through the ballscrews.

The machine is painted in RAL5015 & RAL 7035, being possible other colours.The CE

certificate and maintenance manual (2 copies) and CNC (1 copy) are supplied with the machine. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION. MACHINE’S BASIC STRUCTURE.

MQ milling machine are designed and built after an exhaustive study and analysis of finite

elements, being characterised by its great rigidity and strength, absorption of vibrations and

resistance of all torsion forces when hard jobs are being done

The milling machine is built in pearlitic casting GG-30, stabilised and strongly veined.

There are several different bed modulus

(different bed lengths) for MQ milling machines, with

these modulus (which are linkable), we are able to

offer courses up to 30.000 mm.

The bed with 1700 mm. width is provided with

three prismatic hardened rectified steel guides on

which a great longitudinal carriage slides.

GUIDEWAYS. The guidance of the machine is realized by hardened and rectified prismatic guides with different sizes depending on the needs of each machine element. The guide ways slide on Schneeberger roller skates and antifriction material (Turcite or Rollon depending on the structural element). This guidance system is the best for milling machines with these dimensions and technical characteristics, for high cut power machining. The Schneeberger roller skates with conical and concave adjust, are designed for heavy loads, high rigidity and big precision. These wedges are normally used to fit the preload to the level needed, compensating (its concave adjustment) the possible error of parallelism between its two faces. The antifriction material becomes one of the best elements for the vibration absorption. The movable elements slide on a thin oil film. Guidance of the bed.

The bed of MQ milling machines has 1700 mm. width and is provided with 3 prismatic hardened and rectified guides. On the bed, a big longitudinal carriage _provided with antifriction material (Turcite) and 10 Schneeberger roller skates_ placed in the end of the set, slides. The bed is equipped with telescopic metallic protections and these protections protect of dirt and coolant, the low part of the bed, where the guidance, the codified linear scales and the rack are placed. On the drawings shown below, it is possible to find the configuration of the guidance in X axis. Rack-pinion system:

Guidance of the column.

The column is provided with two hardened and rectified guideways. On these guides, a big vertical carriage provided with 4 Schneeberger skates, placed on the end of the slide (two for each guideway) slide. The roller skates roll on two pieces of hardened steel (one for each vertical guideway). Combining again these two elements on the vertical carriage. The skates and antifriction material (turcite) on vertical carriage. The vertical carriage is equipped, as well, with two adjustable conical scales, which guarantee the possibility of adjusting the machine after some years. Allowing the possibility of keeping the original tolerance and eliminating the possible play generated because of the work.

Guidance of the ram.

On the vertical carriage, the machine ram slides so that, in addition, the vertical carriage works as cross carriage as well. The vertical carriage is provided, for the cross movement, with: 2 Schneeberger skates in the low right guideway (one in the front and the other one at the back part); antifriction material (Turcite); flat rules and conical rules of adjustment (two in each upper right guideway). The ram is provided with prismatic hardened and rectified guideways (where false, hardened and rectified steel decks are inserted) on which the skates roll. Combining the mentioned elements, it is formed an adjustment in “L”, which means that it is adjusted in horizontal and vertical position.

DRIVES.

Longitudinal movement drive.

The longitudinal axis drive is done by the system called pinion-rack. This drive is formed by a helicoidal rack with modulus 8, hardened and grinded. Mounted on the bed and with two pinions on the longitudinal carriage. The pinions work separately. This system is used to eliminate any play that could be produced in case that there were only one pinion.

Cross movement drive.

The ram drive is done through a rotating ballscrew mounted in the middle of the vertical carriage. The ballscrew has 63 mm diameter and 20mm pitch. The movement transmission from the motor to the ballscrew is realized through indented pulleys to increase the torque.

Vertical movement drive.

The vertical axis drive is formed by 2 vertical ballscrews, 80 mm. diameter and 20 mm. pitch. The ballscrews are placed: one of them in the front part of the column and the other one in the rear part. These ballscrews are controlled by two independent motors, allowing controlling the ram in any working conditions. The transmission from the motor to the ballscrew is realized through indented pulleys.

VERTICAL COMPENSATION. The vertical compensation system is formed by one hydraulic telescopic cylinders placed inside the column. This cylinder works in traction to compensate the weight of the set formed by vertical carriage– ram and column. (See previous photo). VERTICAL AXIS BRAKE. The system of emergency vertical braking is realized through the Z axis motors. These motors are brake-motors, and thanks to the reduction realized by the pulleys in the transmission, the necessary torque to stop the vertical carriage in case of emergency, is got.

LUBRICATION SYSTEM. The lubricating system of the machine is centralized and automated. The lubricating system of the guideways, ballscrews and pinions is placed next to the electric cabinet in the rear part of the column. The centralized lubrication station for the milling head air-oil lubrication is placed in the rear part of the ram. On the same place there is also an oil tank. This tank collects the hot oil from the ZF automatic gearbox and from the ram bearings´ refrigeration tips. This oil is taken to a cooler to be used again cooling and lubricating these elements. *(Right Picture) Central lubrication of the milling head

MEASUREMENT SYSTEM. The measurement and counting is done by codified lineal scales in the three axes. To verify that the measurements are in tolerance (0.005 mm), a laser test is used. The X axis scale is mounted in the interior front part of the bed and its support or scale head is placed on a rigid support fixed to the longitudinal carriage. The cross movement scale is mounted on the ram while the scale head is placed on a rigid support fixed to the vertical carriage. The Z axis is provided with two codified linear scales, one for each ballscrew, this is one mounted in the front of the column and the other one in the rear part. Due to this working way it is possible to correct the possible lag existing among the rear and front part. The standard lineal scales are Fagor brand, being available the ones with Heidenhain brand. (if it is not specified, the installed lineal scales will be the standard ones, it means Fagor). As an option, the lineal scales can be pressurized in the 3 axes (X, Y, Z).

MOTORS.

Main Motor AC asynchronous and variable frequency digitally controlled of 37 kW, 100 % EDE. Five AC digital servomotors with independent regulators for the three axes working feeds. THERMAL PROBE. The dilatations´ compensation in the milling head is performed by a thermal probe. The probe reports to the control the milling head temperature, and the control makes the necessary corrections to prevent that the dilatation of the milling head causes any error. COOLING SYSTEM. The basis coolant tank is usually integrated inside the chip conveyor. This deposit collects the coolant of the machine. In case the machine has no chip conveyor, the collection of coolant is done in a tank inside the foundation of the milling machine. The pump and its anti return valve system are fixed on the top of the tank. The output of the coolant is taken from the bottom of the milling head (or through the tool, in case the machine has internal cooling system), and can be manually or automatically controlled. In case of wanting to increase the basic cooling system in volume and pressure capacities (it is 7 bar) there are several additional options that will be detailed in the “deposits” paragraph. HYDRAULIC GROUP. The hydraulic group joins all the elements necessary for the correct running of the machine, such as the accumulator used for the vertical axis compensation, clamping system for tools, etc. The hydraulic group is mounted in the rear part of the machine on a platform tied to the column of the machine. The electro-valves destined to the milling head working are placed in the rear part of the ram.

BASIC PROTECTIONS. The protections of the milling machines are built according to E.C. rules as per 80/392 and its later modifications. The bed is equipped with telescopic metallic protections and these protections protect of dirt and coolant, the low part of the bed, where the guidance, the codified linear scales and the rack are placed. The vertical carriage is equipped with one guide-cleaner to avoid the entrance of dirt into the roller skates and into the ballscrew of the cross movement. The movement of Z axis is protected by a set of frontal bellows with metallic plates. These bellows protect the inside of the column (where the guidance, ballscrews of Z axis, front codified linear scales, and hydraulic weight compensation are placed) from the dirt coming from outside. The rear part of the machine is closed with “CE-2” protection, closing the rear part of the machine invaded by the movement of the ram. In this rear closure there is a door with a safety micro to access inside the CE-2. As this is a travelling column milling machine, for security, it will be furnished with a left hand railing and another on the right side to avoid accidental access of a person to the machine movement area. The left railing will be furnished with a door with a security micro, so that if the door is opened the machine will stop. To protect the worker, the standard milling machine will be furnished with two doors in front of the table. These tables will be furnished with an interlocking micro, so that in order to open the door, the micro must be opened from the control. In addition, the safety regulations, hydraulic and electric regulations are fulfilled Due to the multiple variety of courses, tables and rotary tables there is a great variety of carenages that will be described in other paragraph. MILLING HEAD.

Orthogonal automatic milling head 1º X 1º. This milling head is designed and manufactured as well, entirely in CME, pearlitic cast iron GG30 with clamping tool hydraulic system, ISO-50, DIN 69871. The orthogonal milling head has two movable bodies. The first of the bodies (rear body) turns respect to the ram axis, while the second movable body (front body) turns around and axis which forms 90º with the turning axis of the rear body. The turning of the front and the rear part are automatic, positionable every 1º by a Hirth dentate, the milling head is provided with angular nonius to make a gradual identification. The milling mahine´s bearings are high pressure angular contact ones, making possible to reach **4000 rpm (optionally 5000 rpm) without heating problems. Through hardened palloid conical gears (hardened and grounded) is obteined the transmission. The set gets its lubrication by air -oil, minimizing the effects of heat produced when machining.

CARENAGES AND PROTECTIONS. Besides the basic options described in paragraph 3.1.11, we can find the following options:

Operator platform. It is placed on the left side of the machine, close to the ram. It has a frontal access door to the work area equipped with a safety interlock micro. In the case of supplying the operator platform with keyboard, it will also have an access backdoor with a safety micro, as required the safety regulation of machines.

Elevator/Lift for the operator. It is a cabin for the operator of the machine provided with vertical movement (lift) moved by a hydraulic cylinder. It is also available with an extraible platform of 600 mm. This platform gets out from under the front door of the operator's cabin towards the table, moved by a pneumatic cylinder. When the machine is equipped with a lift, the normal structure is the keyboard installed in the lift.

Right platform, placed on the right side of the machine. It will be adapted to the configuration of the machine, whether it has ATC or not.

Peripheral carenage. Depending on the configuration of the machine, it is possible that the basic doors system is not the best option, or simply it cannot be mounted. For these cases exists a peripheral carenage, with 2.500 mm. height around the working area provided with frontal doors. These ones with a safety interlock micro. In the lateral areas of the machine (out of the work area) the protection height will be 1500 mm and it will have an access door with a safety micro and a small auxiliary keyboard to stop the machine (to access inside) or to start it (in case of wanting to go out from it and it continues automatically).

CHIP CONVEYORS. Longitudinal chain chip conveyor with goose neck to extract the chip. The height is 1.200 mm from the floor. The chip conveyor has an independent motor and it can be switched on automatically or manually. There is the possibility of supplying the machine with two longitudinal chip conveyors. One in the rear part and the other one in the front part. When a longitudinal chip conveyor is installed, the longitudinal length increases. This increase sometimes makes impossible its installation due to the lack of space. This is a usual why for rejecting this option by customers. This involves extracting the chip from the machine manually. When this happens, there is the option of installing a longitudinal plane chip conveyor, which throws the chip in another chip conveyor with neck placed to 90º respect the first one, being this chip conveyor the one which elevates the chip to the height of 1.200 mm. from the floor. This transversal chip conveyor has integrated a tank, which takes the coolant from the machine, not being necessary the basic tank.

TABLES. ( NOT INCLUDED) Depending on the machine courses, on the desired machine configuration and on the work that the machine is going to realize, the customer will have several different tables to choose or will be able to combinate some of those types. Floor tables, rotary tables, and so on.

The floor tables increase their measures, both in longitudinal size and width every 500 mm. being 1000 mm the minimum length possible and being always multiple of 500 mm. The possible widths to choose are 1500, 2000, 2500 or 3000 mm. These floor casting tables will be provided with slots in T28 DIN-650 every 250 mm (if there are not specifications against, the slots will be in H12). The height of these floor tables is 300 mm and its maximum admissible load is 15 Tn/m2 with flatness according to DIN 876 / II (for any modification of someone of the characteristics of this tables, please consult with CME's technical department).

It is possible to choose among the several existing rotary tables, depending on the size of the rotary table, on the linear course, accuracies and on if

these are hydrostatic or not. As well as the maximum admissible load.

ROTARY TABLES AND TAILSTOCKS. (NOT INCLUDED) The MQ milling machines type can be supplied with several rotary tables diameters. The optional standard diameters are 500 mm, 600 mm and 1000 mm. The standard rotary tables do not have encoder. But it is an option to have one. Being their encoder precision ±10”, ±5” or ±2”. The machine can be supplied prepared for the future installation of the rotary table. This preparation can be in two different levels. It can have all the cables installed or the cables and hydraulic group prepared to run

If the client has a rotary table and wants to use it with a MQ model, it will be necessary to contact with the CME technical department ELECTRIC CABINET WITH CLIMATIZER. Electrical components installed in the electric cabinet generate heat, this heat remains in the cabinet and it must be extracted. The standard option for cooling the electric cabinet consists of a forced ventilation system. Through a ventilator the hot air is extracted from the electric cabinet and new colder air is introduced through a filter. As an option, and especially for dirty environments, it is recommended installing an air conditioner in the electric cabinet, either tropicalized or not. The advantage of installing the air conditioner is to extend the life of electronic components by preventing better the entry of dirt and not having to clean the filters and ventilators of the forced ventilation.

SUPPLY VOLTAGE. The standard voltage supplied for our machines is 380V and 50 Hz, but depending on the customer request, for example because of the country where the machine is going to run, the machine can be supplied with the following electric characteristics:

400 V / 50 Hz 415 V / 50 Hz 440 V / 50 Hz 440 V / 60 Hz 480 V / 60 Hz

It is also optional to provide with the machine an electrical converter 45 KVA.

PACKAGING. (NOT INCLUDED) When the machine is wanted to be sent by boat or train, the packages needed are different to the ones needed when the transport is going to be by road. This is why in the offer will be necessary to specify the transport type and where the machine is going to be sent (country). If the transport is going to travel by road and the customer wants to transport the machine in a normal (standard) way or with a seaworthy package (with closed wooden boxes), it must be warned as well. Otherwise it is assumed that the transport will be in a standard road transport.
