Situational ObstaclesSituational Obstacles• IIncomprehensibilityncomprehensibility exists when a message is not easy for

us to understand because of language or transmission transmission problems

• Message OverloadMessage Overload occurs when the messages are too many for us to take and keep in mind

Situational ObstaclesSituational Obstacles

• Message ComplexityMessage Complexity exists when a message we are trying to understand is highly complex, packed with detailed information, or involves intricate reasoning

• Environmental DistractionsEnvironmental Distractions occurs when some external factors affect us and make us lose attention and miss information– Example: When you are listening to your teacher but

suddenly you hear a sound of a truck in the street. That sound makes you lose focus and miss the information in the course

Page 6: Obstacles to ineffective listening(w3)

Internal ObstaclesInternal Obstacles• PreoccupationPreoccupation: One of the most common obstacles to

listening is preoccupation. When you are too interested or paying attention to something, you'll miss other things around– Example: Your class intends to go camping at the weekend but you

are focusing on your homework and do not hear what they say. So, you will not know what place they decide to go on the trip

Page 7: Obstacles to ineffective listening(w3)

Internal ObstaclesInternal Obstacles• Prejudgment:Prejudgment: A second internal obstacle to good

listening is prejudgment. It occurs when we tend to judge others or their ideas before we have heard them– Example: When a team member gives you the idea that he or she

has told you before, you may think you already understand that ideal so you do not listen carefully. However they can add more detailed information on what they say but you miss all that information because of not listening carefully

Page 8: Obstacles to ineffective listening(w3)

Internal ObstaclesInternal Obstacles• Lack of effortLack of effort: The third is lacking of effort. It occurs

when we sometimes feel tired and do not want to make efforts to listen well– Example: In the classroom, you fall asleep when your teacher is

teaching. The lecture is very important and you want to listen to your teacher. However, because you feel too tired and your effort is not high, you still fall asleep

Page 9: Obstacles to ineffective listening(w3)

Internal ObstaclesInternal Obstacles• Reacting to emotionally loaded languageReacting to emotionally loaded language: When we react

to words that evoke very strong responses, positive or negative. Those words make us fail to grasp another person's meaning– Examples of loaded words are peace, war, patriotism, freedom,

rebellion, slavery, justice, unity

• Not recognizing diverse listening styles:Not recognizing diverse listening styles: Recognizing and adjusting to different listening styles that reflect different cultures and social communities– Example: Indian people often shake their head to show agreement.

A speaker who doesn’t understand this pattern will find it confusing and misinterpret the agreement as disagreement
