Instructional Shifts--CCSS

ELA- 1-Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction. 2-Reading, writing, & speaking grounded in evidence from text, both literary & informational. 3-Regular practice with complex text & its academic language.

MATH- 1-Focus strongly where the Standards focus. 2-Coherence: think across grades, & link to major topics within grades. 3-Rigor: require conceptual understanding, procedural skill & fluency, & application with intensity.

These shifts can be applied in ALL classes/disciplines.

CLOSE READING Activity…

Read to yourself the Exemplar Text From “The Preamble: We the People”

Once everyone has finished reading, write down your responses to the questions you will hear.

Share time. First, Table group. Then, Whole group.

*This is an example of what close reading will look like. This puts accountability for all students to think deeply about the passage instead of waiting for the teacher or partner to tell them what it means.

“Common Core Classroom Project”

America Achieves website. Teachers who have incorporated text-dependent questions into a close reading activity as part of their classroom instruction. Gr.9 “Symbolism in ‘The Lottery’”

Think about:How instructional shifts are incorporated. How the teaching is similar to or different

from current practices in your district &/or school.

Any evidence of Backward Planning?

OMS Commitments to Common Core Roll Out... August 2012

1. Provide opportunities for all teachers to increase awareness of Common Core and to learn to teach within its frameworks.

2. Create a Professional Library of tasks across the curriculum. Each teacher will assign a task (once a month) that requires students to articulate their thought process in arriving at a solution. This task will be submitted to the Professional Library.

3. Communicate with all stakeholders the value and rationale of Common Core.
