Fun Planned for All at Fall Family Festival Make plans now to stop by the festival.

Covenant Presbyterian Church will be hosting their annual Fall Family Festival on Saturday October 18th from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. The church is hoping to reach out to

anyone and everyone who would like to stop by for something to eat or simply to enjoy the fun on a fall afternoon. Also this year, we are trying to enlist several youth

organizations throughout the community to come and tell those who attend about what it is they do and how youth and parents can become involved. The Festival will feature free

food, horseback rides, games, pumpkin decorating, balloon animal creations, cotton candy, the giant inflatable slide and information on local community youth activities. And

as in the past we plan to end the evening with Trunk or Treating at 6:45.

Covenant is hosting a Life Line

Screening on October 24. It’s not

too late to sign up for these

life saving tests. There are flyers

available with more information at

the church or you can visit:

Coming to Covenant Soon! The Alternative Gift Market

You will have an opportunity to purchase an alternative gift after church on Sunday, November 2nd and Sunday, November 9th. An alternative gift is humanitarian support given in honor of a friend or family member. There are 30 causes in categories such as hunger, education, child mortality, environmental sustainability. This is a wonderful opportunity to give a gift that impacts the lives of others. The Alternative Market is an easy way to shop

for the holidays and at the same time impact change in the world. If you would like to learn more about the projects, pick up a catalog from the information table at church or

visit the website - www.altgifts.org.

Naming What is Blocking Our Way Sometimes the way we describe what is getting in our way without naming the solution can make a huge difference in moving toward a desired vision of the future. One day a car was driving down a deserted road out in the middle of nowhere, when suddenly it had a flat tire. The passengers got out, opened the trunk, and discovered to their dismay that there was no jack. They decided they needed a jack to change the tire, so they started off on foot down the road to try and find a gas station in order to borrow a jack. A few minutes later, another car came down the deserted road. Suddenly, it too had a flat tire. The passengers got out of the car, opened the trunk, and discovered there was no jack. They thought for a while and decided that they needed to find a way to lift the car, so they could change the tire. They looked all around and found a big rock and a log. Using the rock and the log, they lifted up the side of the car and changed the tire. Why was it that the passengers of the second car resolved the problem of the flat tire first? Answer: the difference is the way each group named the block. The first group named it in terms of the solution – no jack. Thus, their only option for a solution was to get a jack. The second group named the block as having no way to lift the car. They, therefore, had many possible options for finding a way to lift the car, not only one. (From Participatory Strategic Planning, The Institute of Cultural Affairs) On Sunday, September 21st, church leaders from Session, the Board of Deacons, the Transition Team, the Mission Study Task Force, and staff gathered to explore the implications of the new vision statement, mission statement, and specific goal and to start working them into the details of church life. Here is where we started: CPC Vision CPC: Called and Connected by Christ, Partners in our community, Committed to serve. CPC Mission Statement We are a faith-filled church family embarking on a journey of spiritual growth and Christian ministry through worship, study, fellowship and service. We build and strengthen relationships with Christ through programs that inspire our growing multigenerational community achieving a culture of faith and goodwill. CPC Specific Goal We envision that through an intergenerational focus, our church can reach out to children and youth and be the glue that keeps families together and unites our church family.

Part of that work involved naming the blocks and barriers that prevent us from realizing our vision. These are the contradictions that are so integrated into our experience that we do not readily recognize them for what they are. For example, organizations that operate out of old images that no longer fit their situation will unknowingly repel those they seek to serve. For as long as that image dominates their thinking, they will miss opportunities and structure their organization in such a way that it will not be effective.

In a short time, a short list of underlying contradictions was generated. 1. Change is difficult. 2. Church is only Sunday morning. 3. Church is only here. 4. We are a small church. 5. We can’t do that. We won’t do that. 6. Presbyterian tradition and stereotypes (rich, conservative). 7. We want to serve people in need. We aren’t them. 8. We are attracted to and attractive to people like us. 9. We’ve been there. We’ve done that. We don’t want to do that again. 10. Programs-of-the-month don’t work. Being pressed for time, we didn’t develop these beyond creating the list. According to the Institute of Cultural Affairs, there is a second step that has proven to be helpful to groups and organizations that are seeking to implement a new vision. It is a rather simple, yet illuminating step. It involves describing the situation further with words like: • Outdated • Fragmented • Overlapping • Inaccessible • Unrealistic • Uncoordinated • Reluctant • Disjointed • Confusing • Debilitating

As a follow-up to the work day, I sent a copy of this article to our church leaders, asking them to begin deepening their understanding of the challenge we face with this exercise. You are welcome to join the work. Please feel free to pass along your discovered insights to a member of Session or me. I hope that this is helpful to you in understanding what is happening in and around the church these days, the steps we will be taking, and how you can participate in the process. Let me or one of the other members of the Session know if you have any questions. Thanks for sharing the journey. I am grateful for your support and encouragement. Grace and Peace, Lee
