Octa-core smartphones to get a boost in 2015
The first “true octa-core” mobile chipset was launched by MediaTek in November 2013, and smartphones were immediately equipped with the new chipsets. Big manufacturers and brands like Lenovo, Huawei, Xiaomi, Coolpad, ZTE, TCL and others started to produce octa-core smartphones. By conservative estimates, there were more than 200 models of China-made octa-core smartphones released during 2014. Octa-core-equipped chipsets will be more common among China-made smartphones in the next few quarters, and will experience sustained growth in 2015.
According to a survey of Global Sources’ octa-core phone suppliers, all suppliers released their first octa-core phone in the second half year of 2014. The companies typically introduced 2 or 3 different models, and most of their shipments in 2014 were under 50,000 units. Only two suppliers had five or more models, and their shipments in 2014 were over 200,000 each. However, 90 percent of suppliers in the survey agreed that their shipments for octa-core phones will significantly increase in 2015, and the range of expected growth runs from 50 percent to 300 percent from 2014.
How do octa-core chipsets change the next generation of smartphones? What are the main trends for octa-core phones in 2015? The following sections will elaborate.
Key trends
1. “4G” and “64-bit” will be the main keywords for octa-core phones in 2015 As of December 2014, there are 11 models of 4G octa-core chipsets from top chipset suppliers; Qualcomm (2), MediaTek (4) and Huawei (5). Half of
them are 64-bit models that are meant for the middle and high-end product lines. The 64-bit architecture allows octa-core phones to have more RAM, which in turn results in a much smoother UI experience for users.
MediaTek, the largest chipset supplier to Chinese phone makers, has developed several new octa-core 4G chipsets. In the second quarter of 2014, MediaTek updated the MT6592 (the first true octa-core chipset) by combining with MT6290 to support 4G LTE. In addition, the company also launched three other chipsets with 4G capabilities, and two of them are 64-bit. This is commonly regarded as a sign that 4G has become the industry standard, with 64-bit processors likely being one of the typical features in mid- to high-end octa-core phones.
2. Larger screens with higher resolutionIn the past two years, the average screen size of mobile phones has grown from 4 to 5 inches; some flagship Chinese phone models are larger, generally between 5.3 and 5.5 inches. While the screen size of mobile phones may have already reached its practical limits, manufacturers are still trying to create even larger ones by increasing the screen-to-bezel ratio. For example, Huawei’s MATE 7 (a high-end flagship octa-core phone) has a ratio of about 83 percent with a screen size of 6 inches. A narrower bezel allows for bigger screens without increasing the size of phone, becoming an important trend in the near future. As a result, the screen size of most octa-core phones will likely be between 4.7 and 5.5 inches.
In addition, screen resolution will trend higher this year, especially in mid- and high-end octa-core phones. Current chipsets, for example the MT6592 and MT6752 from MediaTek, support full HD displays
New octa-core phones will feature 4G, 64-bit processors, and larger, higher resolution screens.

with a resolution of 1920x1080, while the MT6595 and MT6795 support 1440x2560 resolution. The two octa-core chipsets from Qualcomm both support up to 4K (3840x2160) screen resolution.
Current entry-level octa-core phones mostly have 960x540 or 1280x720 screen resolution, but mid- and high-end octa-core phones typically have full HD screens with at least 1920x1080 resolution. Screens with 1440x2560 resolution will be seen in high-end models before the end of 2015.
3. Higher megapixel camerasNew octa-core chipsets (MT6595 and MT6795) from MediaTek are able to support up to 20MP cameras, and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 supports cameras with up to 55MP. More China phone makers will follow the trend to increase camera resolutions from the current 2MP/5MP front/back cameras to 5/8MP or 5/13MP. High-end phones may feature rear cameras with 18MP to 20MP resolution.
Finally, even though DDR2/DDR3 will still be the
primary SDRAM type for most octa-core phones, because 64-bit chipsets can handle more and better memory types, DDR4 will show up in a few flagship models. As estimated by upstream SDRAM suppliers, in 2015, LPDDR3 will account for 60 percent of smartphone RAM and LPDDR4 may make up 15 percent.
Pricing guide
In 2013, Samsung announced the world’s first octa-core mobile chipset (Exynos 5410), which utilized ARM's Big.Little technology, and combined four ARM Cortex-A7 chips with another four more powerful Cortex A-15 multi-core chips. However, even though Exynos 5410 was able to bring a new level of performance to a mobile phone and increase battery life by up to 70 percent, because it only activated up to half of its CPU cores at once, it was not regarded as a true 8-core chipset. It was not until MediaTek’s MT6592 came out – the chipset allowed all the eight cores to run simultaneously – that a true octa-core chipset entered the market.

As mentioned earlier, there were 11 octa-core mobile phone chipsets launched by the end of 2014, with seven of them (3 of MediaTek, 1 from Qualcomm, and 3 of Huawei) already in mass production and utilized in the production of octa-core phones. The table on page 31 indicates the main features of these octa-core chipsets.
Qualcomm mostly focuses on a few high-end models, while Huawei’s Kirin chipsets are usually prioritized for Huawei’s own mobile devices. Therefore, MediaTek chipsets still are the No.1 choice for most Chinese mobile phone makers.
Including the chipset (SoC), there are totally more than 25 components in a phone. The components that cost over $10 usually involve display/touch screen and glass (cost between $18 and $55), CPU ($14 to $40), Baseband chip + RF transceiver (BB+XCR) from $12 to $25, cameras ($10 to $25), SDRAM ($5 to $10), and NAND memory (from $5 to $10). Based on the above, most China-made octa-core smartphones are typically priced between $80 and $240.
Generally, models between $80 and $120 belong to the entry-level range, and usually carry an MT6295 chipset, 1GB RAM+8GB ROM, 4.7 inch to 5.0 inch
QHD or HD screen, dual cameras from 2MP/5MP to 2MP/8MP, and only support 3G.
Mid-range models are priced between $120 and $180, utilize MT6295, MT6295M or MT6752 chipsets, include 1GB/8GB to 2GB/16GB for RAM and ROM, 5.0 inch to 5.5 inch HD or FHD screen, with dual cameras with resolutions ranging from 5MP/8MP to 8MP/13MP, and support 3G or 4G LTE.
High-end models are priced between $180 and $240, have more options in SoC (such as the MT6592M, MT6752, MT6595 and MT6795), include 2GB/16GB in RAM and ROM, FHD screen at 1920x1080 to 2560x1440, dual cameras with 5MP/13MP to 8MP/18MP or higher resolution, and support 4G LTE. Industry overview
According to TrendForce, about 450 million units were shipped from China in 2014, which is about 38.6 percent of the global production. The top six phone makers were Lenovo (20.6 percent of China’s production), Huawei (15 percent), Xiaomi (13.5 percent), Coolpad (11.4 percent), ZTE (8.6 percent) and TCL (6.0 percent), while the rest of the 24.9 percent of shipments came from OEM and other manufacturers.
