PRAYER FOR YOUTH We offer to you, Loving God, the gifts and needs of
youth. Bless them with your guiding grace as they face the
challenges and opportunities in their lives. Touch their hearts with the gentleness of your love, that
they may know they are valued and valuable beings. Send your spirit of hope to their lives, that they may
believe in themselves and know they are needed in this world.
Grace them with the gift of joy that they may celebrate life through laughter and tears alike.
Guide us, as we continue to grow in appreciation of the many gifts of young people, in the ministry
opportunities we offer to them, in the journey of faith we walk with them, in our shared mission as a community
called to discipleship in the world.

Strength and Guidance Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for your faithfulness throughout the generations. Your word says that, although people plan their course in their hearts, it is you who establishes our steps. Give me strength and guidance for everything that lies before me. Whatever I do today, your loving eye is
on me and you have promised to guide me. Help me to fix my eyes on you as I run the race of life. Help me to walk by faith and not by sight.
Strengthen me through your Holy Spirit. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen
If you would like to make an announcement for your ministry or event please email: [email protected]

All we know about St. Canice is from unreliable legend, according to which he was born at Glengiven, Ireland. He became a monk under St. Cadoc at Llancarfan, Wales, and was ordained there. After a trip to Rome, he studied under St. Finnian at Clonard, Ireland, accompanied by Ss. Kieran, Columba, and Comgall to St. Mobhi at Glasnevin. He preached for a time in Ireland, and then went to Scotland. A close friend of Columba's whom he accompanied on a visit to King Brude of the Picts. He was a most successful missionary, building a monastery at Aghaboe, Ireland, and probably one at Kilkenny. He is known as Kenneth and Cainnech. His feast day is October 11th.

We were once asked if the people we help ever paid us back. While the person who asked the question knew that we never asked for remuneration, he wondered if
people ever tried to “return the favor.” While at the time the question caught us off guard, and while we knew that yes,
the people we help do oftentimes try to return the help, the question led us to pay more careful attention to the actual everyday workings of Helping Hands.
We wrote several years ago about the man to whom we had given boxes of food. The man shared his food with another man in need. Over the years he
developed a friendship with the man, and when he finally came into some money, he not only took care of his friend financially, but he donated several checks to Helping
Hands in return for the help he had received from us so long ago. The monetary donations far outweighed anything we had done for him financially.
We oftentimes receive donations in the mail from people with simple notes such as “You helped me when I was down and out.” “You saved me, and now I would like to do what I can to help someone else.” The checks or money enclosed may range
from a few dollars to several hundred. Every penny received is a tremendous blessing to us because we know that it came to us from someone from whom that
money was precious. Every day that our store is open we receive unsolicited donations. While we
may charge $2 for an item, we are oftentimes given $5 or even more. The comments range from: “you helped me when I was in need, and I want to do what I can to help
someone else,” to “you do such good work; let me help you do more,” to “just use it to help someone out.” Those donations amount to many, many dollars each day that
the store is open. Still other people use our thrift store as a means of helping the poor. They know that we are an all-volunteer organization and that all of the money we take in goes to alleviate the needs of the poor. One wonderful man each year will come to our store, buys an item for which we would normally charge less than $1. He hands us a check for $1,000 and tells us to keep the change. With a wink and a smile he tells us that he
is sure we can find a good way to use it. We are both blessed and humbled because in all of those cases the money was
never solicited. Yes, the people we help, and our customers all help us to pay it forward, as much as they are capable of doing. And for those who cannot, there are a multitude of people in our wonderful city who watch over the poor every day. Those
people are you, who help us care for them through your generous donations. What a special ministry we have at Helping Hands! We cannot help but know
that God’s gentle, loving arms are embracing us as we seek to care for His most favored ones. And those arms embrace us through your support of Helping Hands.
Thank you so very, very much!
