Clambake—The Chardon VFW could use your help in spreading the word about our October 27th clam bake. As you know, the VFW is a non-profit organization that generously donates 100% of net profits to

local veteran and community programs. In addition to the annual Chardon High School VFW Scholarships that we provide, we also organize and host many community and veteran events. On October 27th, the VFW is hav-ing it's annual clam bake, the cost is $25 per bake (1/2 chicken, dozen clams, and all the fix'ins), additional dozen clams for $10. The Clam Bake tickets are on sale at the Chardon VFW Post at 752 Water Street. We ap-preciate anything that you can do to spread the word.

Halloween Parties

Our classroom parties for T/Th kindergarten will be on Tuesday, October 30 and W/F kin-

dergarten and grades 1-5 will take place on Wednesday, October 31. . These are instructional days,

and festivities will not begin until 2:15 pm with the parade followed by the parties at 2:30 pm.

The children are permitted to wear costumes for this event; however, costumes must be

appropriate for school. They MUST be in good taste without any “blood, guts and gore” or any

weapon or look-alike weapon of any kind. If a costume includes a mask, please make sure the eye-

holes are large enough to allow for proper vision and safety. Due to our time constraints, students

are encouraged to wear clothing which will not require a complete outfit change. For example, blue

jeans and a sport team’s jersey would be a good choice. Make-up is discouraged. Please do not

send your child to school with make-up already applied. If you question whether or not a costume

is appropriate, it probably is not.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school office at 285-4065. We ex-

pect this to be a fun and safe time for all of the children.

NOTES FROM THE NURSE

MAPLE SKI CLUB—Ski package forms are available at the Maple

office. Pick one up and mail form and money to Alpine Valley. If you

sign up by October 21, 2012 you will receive 2 free lift tickets for

each person you sign up. Any questions feel free to call Bruce or

Terri Carson at 440-286-8426. Hope to see you there.

Student Council will be in charge of BOX TOPS this year. The class with the most box tops collected from the month will win a se-cret box filled with candy/prizes, that they will keep until a new win-ner is announced the next month. There will be a winner from the upper and lower hall. Have family members collect Box Tops for you, cut them carefully, and bring them to school! A container will be in each classroom to make it easy for you to turn them in. Don't forget! You could be part of the next class to keep the secret box and enjoy the goodies inside.

HEAD LICE PREVENTION— nits are the very tiny eggs of head lice, about the size of a flake of dandruff. They are grayish-

white, oval shaped, and firmly attached to the hair shaft near the scalp. They are most commonly found at the nape of the neck and around the ears. It is rare to actually see the louse/lice because they move so quickly. If you suspect your child has head lice, please contact the school nurse immediately to assist you with proper identification, treatment, and eradication. It is through your prompt reporting of head lice cases that we are able to keep the problem under control at school. Please be assured that head lice infestation is a common condition of children that has nothing to do with cleanliness. ANY child can get head lice.

While lice do not jump or fly, they easily spread from child to child. Teach your child how to stay lice free by instructing him/her not to share coats, scarves, head bands, hats, hair clips or ribbons, and brushes or combs with other children. Co-operative efforts between you and the school are important in preventing the spread of head lice.

Pick Up —Thursday, October 18th 4:30-5:30

PTO Reminder: The T-shirts used for Jog A Thon are also to be used for Field Day in May 2013. The $10 per student fee that was paid by

Maple parents covers the cost of Maple T-shirts, Pastries with Parents, Family Movie Night, Sledding party, Teacher appreciation gifts, AND

Field Day lunches!

We will continue to charge nominal fees for mother-son, father-daughter, etc. events since the costs vary by event. Our three fundraisers will

also have their own costs if you choose to participate (Jog A Thon, Night At The Races, and School Carnival). The 5th grade trip to Severance

Hall is a non-PTO event so it is not included in this fee.
