Why Examine and Approach Disparities?

“Since the 1980s, our nation has made substantial progress in improving residents’ health and reducing health disparities, but ongoing racial/ethnic, economic, and other social disparities in health are both unacceptable and correctable.” - Thomas R. Frieden, M.D., M.P.H.16th Director , CDC MMWR. January 14, 2011. Vol. 60. No. 1

Strategies to Reduce Sodium Intake in the US

“Americans consume unhealthy amounts of sodium in their food, far exceeding public health recommendations. Consuming too much sodium increases the risk for high blood pressure, a serious health condition that is avoidable and can lead to a variety of diseases. Analysts estimate that population-wide reductions in sodium could prevent more than 100,000 deaths annually.”

- Institute of Medicine April 20, 2010

National Surveillance of CVD

• CVD is common and costly, yet among the most preventable health problems.

• Surveillance systems have a potentially key role in reducing this health toll.

• Currently, surveillance data are collected from a variety of sources, often with beneficial results

National Surveillance of CVD

“But a critical link is missing: There is no surveillance system that operates on a national basis and in a coordinated manner to integrate current and emerging data on chronic diseases and generate timely guidance for stakeholders at the local, state, regional, and national levels.”
