Upper Midwest Health Expo 2014 Conference Presenters

Matt Birk Former NFL Football Player, HIKE Foundation Founder Matt Birk grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota and attended Catholic elementary and high school. He was a Cub Scout, a member of the National Honor Society, and played “pretty much every sport there was to play.” After high school, Matt attended Harvard University and earned a degree in Economics. While playing for the Harvard Crimson, he received several football honors, including All-Ivy League and Division I-AA All-American. Matt was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the sixth round of the 1998 draft. Appearing in 228 career games, including 18 playoff contests, Matt spent 11 seasons with Minnesota and 4 more with the Baltimore Ravens. He was named the 2011 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year for his off-the-field service, as well as his playing excellence. Matt has a passion for children and education, and has focused a great deal of his energy on promoting literacy among the youth in his communities. In 2002, he created the H.I.K.E. Foundation (Hope, Inspiration, Knowledge, Education) in Minnesota. It has grown greatly since then and its initiatives reached over 100,000 children in the Baltimore area in 2012. After a 15 year career in the NFL and a Super Bowl XLVII win with the Baltimore Ravens, the six-time Pro Bowl Center announced his retirement in February, 2013. Matt, his wife Adrianna, and their six children now reside in Florida.

Dr. Gerald McDonnell Vice President, Research and Clinical Services Steris Corporation Dr. Gerald McDonnell is vice president, Research and Clinical Services, for Mentor, Ohio-based STERIS Corporation, a provider of infection prevention, contamination control and surgical support products and services. He also is a consultant with Biotest Laboratories in the design, development and testing of reusable devices and their instructions for use. McDonnell holds a B.Sc. (Hons.) in medical laboratory sciences and a Ph.D. in microbiology. He is a frequent presenter on infection prevention with more than 160 publications and patents in the area, including a new book published in 2012 titled "A Practical Guide to Decontamination. He is an assistant editor for the Journal of Hospital Infection and a reviewer for a number of other leading journals on infection prevention/control topics. McDonnell is a member of national and international working groups, including AAMI, ISO and EN

committees, for standard and guideline development on areas including sterilization, disinfection, cleaning and aseptic processing.

Jennifer Carlson CPSM, Manager, Sourcing and Contracting Allina Health Jennifer Carlson, CPSM, is manager of Sourcing and Contracting for General Surgery and Nursing products at Allina Health. In this role, she leads a team of buyers, contract managers and a portfolio analyst with program responsibility for medical/surgical and business solution products and services. Operating at the system level, the team supports Allina’s hospitals, surgery centers and clinics. The service practice includes sourcing/contracting, standardization initiatives, supplier performance management and price management/procurement. Carlson has more than 10 years of health care supply chain experience in areas that include capital equipment, cardiovascular and neuro/spine.

Rose Seavey MBA, BS, RN, CNOR, CRCST, CSPDT President/CEO Seavey Healthcare Consulting Rose Seavey is President/CEO of Seavey Healthcare Consulting and formerly the Director of the Sterile Processing Department at The Children’s Hospital of Denver. Rose served on the AORN Board in 2008-2010. Rose is a past President ASHCSP. She received numerous awards such as AORN’s award for Mentorship in 2012 and Outstanding Achievement in Nurse Education in 2001. In addition, she received the national IAHCSMM award of Honor in 2013, the Industry Leadership Award from the Massachusetts chapter (2012) and the educator of the year award from the Golden West chapter (2013). She was one of the Who’s Who in Infection Prevention in 2006 by Infection Control Today. Ms. Seavey is the author of the book tilted Sterile Processing In Healthcare Facilities: Preparing for Accreditations Surveys, published by AAMI and she serves on several AAMI committees writing standards.

Paul Higday Vice President, Marketing Owens & Minor Paul Higday serves Owens & Minor, Inc. as Vice President, Marketing—a role he assumed in 2012, in which he is responsible for the development and implementation of Owens & Minor’s industry leading supply chain programs Prior to taking on this role, Paul served as Vice President, Strategic Planning and Development for five years. During his tenure in the role, he was responsible for understanding long-term trends and issues facing the healthcare industry and defining Owens & Minor’s strategic response to those trends. Since coming to Owens & Minor in 1997, Paul has also served in the roles of Vice President, Information Technology; and Chief Architect & Director, External Systems. In these roles he was responsible for systems architecture, technology integration and implementation of provider and supplier-facing systems. He was also instrumental in developing Owens & Minor e-commerce systems, including the company’s initial extranet and intranet sites, and EDI systems. Prior to joining Owens & Minor, Paul was an information technology consultant, including

Paul earned both a B.S.E. in Management from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a B.S.E. in Computer Science from the Moore School of Engineering at the University Of Pennsylvania. During college, he was active in speech and debate, winning National Championships in Impromptu Speaking, Extemporaneous Speaking, Rhetorical Criticism and Lincoln-Douglas Debate. He is also a previous winner of the Great American Think-off where he was voted Smartest Man in America. In his free time, Paul travels the world with his family, competes in volleyball tournaments and tries to improve his woodworking skills.

Teri Nelson RN BS, MA

Terri Nelson has been employed at Mayo Clinic for 30+ years; she has held positions as a Staff Nurse, Nurse Manager, Quality Analyst, and her current position as Manager of the Clinical Quality Value Analysis unit. She received her Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from Winona State University and her Master’s Degree in Health Administration and Management from St. Mary’s University, Winona Minnesota. She is a member of the Associate of Healthcare Value Analysis Professionals (AHVAP) has served as the organizations secretary, Member of the Editorial Board for the Bard Value Analysis Newsletter, and participated on the Novation Clinical Council. She has presented on the topics of Value Analysis, Formation of a Product Formulary and Recall Management both at local and national conference including AHRMM, VHA Leadership and AHVAP

Dr. Jerry D. VanVactor, DHA, FAHRMM Health Care Administrator – Logistics Management US Army Medical Service Corps Dr. Jerry D. VanVactor is a native of Hopkinsville, Kentucky and an active duty health care administrator (logistics) in the medical service corps of the United States Army. He has served in the U.S. military since 1989. His resumé includes both civilian and military assignments related to health care, law enforcement, and emergency management throughout the United States and abroad. His military assignments have included hospital-based and tactical assignments wherein he has assisted, on multiple occasions, in the development of health care supply chain and emergency management plans for a variety of installations upon which he has been assigned. Operational deployments have included both Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom. He is a Doctor of Health Administration and holds Masters and Bachelor degrees in Health Care Management curricula. He is a Demonstrated Master Logistician (International Society of Logistics), Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, a Certified Materials & Resource Professional, and a Fellow of the Association for Healthcare Resource and Materials Management (AHRMM). Dr. VanVactor is currently the military representative for the AHRMM Executive Board of Directors.

LeAnn Born Vice President of Supply Chain Fairview Health Services LeAnn Born serves as vice president of supply chain for Fairview Health Services. In this role, she has responsibility for the centralized administration of the sourcing, contracting, value analysis, acquisition, logistics, inventory management, procure-to-pay, instrument sterilization, new technology assessment, vendor management and business enterprise system (Peoplesoft) support teams. Born joined Fairview in 2010 with more than 16 years of experience in health care operations and supply chain leadership roles. Most recently, Born served as vice president of custom contracting services for Novation, the contracting services company of University HealthSystem Consortium, VHA and Provista. In this role, she had responsibility for the company’s custom and regional contracting services, which provided flexible contracting options for individual members or groups of members. In other roles at Novation, Born also provided oversight for the organization’s contract process and related work-flow technology, led the member council and task force activities, and had programmatic responsibility for the contracting and program development in laboratory, respiratory, anesthesia, support services (business products, food and nutrition, and facilities) and capital. Prior to joining Novation, Born held several leadership positions during her 12 years of service at Allina Hospitals & Clinics in Minneapolis, including interim vice president of supply chain. She served in other corporate roles as director of material operations, resource manager, standardization consultant, and in operational roles as clinic manager in the Allina Medical Clinic and as administrative fellow and director of Materials Management at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. Prior to joining Allina, Born marketed senior housing options at Walker Methodist. Born holds a master of healthcare administration degree from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and a bachelor of business administration degree in marketing from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Mark Duro CRCST, FCS Manager, Central Sterile Processing New England Baptist Hospital Mark is the current manager of the New England Baptist Hospital Central Sterile Processing department. New England Baptist Hospital is a leader in orthopedics and is the official hospital of the Boston Celtics. Mark has been in the sterile processing management profession for the past twenty years and is also the current Vice President of the Massachusetts Chapter of Central Services professionals. Mark has also been a member of IAHCSMM since 1992 and has been the Chair person for IAHCSMM’s orthopedic council for the past 4 years. In 2011 Mark was awarded fellowship status within IAHCSMM and is one of 34 Fellows. Mark has also been IAHCSMM

In 2012 in Albuquerque Mark was awarded the educator of the year award by IAHCSMM. Mark also consults in areas of Sterile Processing nationally and internationally.
