Back Roads to Pozo Saloon Bob & Inge Stallings

Saturday October 31, 2009 Before the goblins come out of the woodwork … Saturday via back roads to visit in the back hills behind the old Pozo Saloon, that was a stage coach stop in 1858. Willie will not be there, the Pozo Martinis are refreshing … one is the limit. As always … it is all about the cars and the drivers and the road. Come join a fun day. Bob Stallings

Sunday Aug 30 run to Solvang: We tried to get everyone together for the photo but 7 of us were indisposed at the time! For the drive up San Marcos Pass the weather made for beautiful views all the way up from 10 beautiful cars. Dinner was outstanding and the staff at the River Grill proved once again why we love their venue for this run. We then drove on to the outdoor theater performance and thanks to the heat

wave, we didn't feel the cold this year. We are already looking forward to doing this again next summer. These are the folks who made this another fun (and funny!) run: Daryl and Carole Burgess, Roger and Keiko Dunham, Dennis and Sandy Higgins, Jerry and Dotty Livers, Fred Markley and guest Jackie, Richard Steel and Kim Van Meter, Bob and Diane Szalay, Bob and Evie Wheeler, Lee and Claudia Whitney, and Mike and Linda Wolfe.

Steamers Brunch Run Lee Whitney

We had a great time on the lunch run to Steamer's in Pismo Beach on Sunday, September 27. We left the Timber's Restaurant at 10:15 AM. It was an overcast and gloomy morning, but as soon as we passed through the Gaviota tunnel that changed into a beautiful, sunny ride. From Buellton we took Santa Rosa Road to Lompoc, went over Harris Grade, and then took Highway 1 into Pismo Beach. There was plenty to see along the way, including or-chards, vineyards, flower fields, crops, horses, and more, and we enjoyed the swooping curves of Santa Rosa Road and a few twisties over Harris Grade. Unfortunately, when we got to Pismo Beach they were fogged in, so we were-n't able to enjoy Steamer's beautiful ocean view; however, we very much enjoyed lunch and each other's com-pany. Run participants were: Bob and Diane Szalay, Ed Clerkin, Richard Steel and Kim VanMeter, Art and June Aldritt, Fred Markley and Leslie Lund, Daryl and Carole Burgess, Thor Edgren and Patty Wayland, Jerry and Dotty Livers, Roger Hoyt, Phil Bunn, John Barletta and Astro, and Lee and Claudia Whitney.

Well, everyone is home safe and sound from the Corvette Caravan 09 trip to Bowling Green. What an amazing experience! I realized during the trip that if you want to really know your car take a long, multi-week road trip. For instance we collectively in C6’s discovered that Trip Odometer’s A & B reset themselves automatically at 2000 miles; why 2000 we have no idea. Also, on my C6 when using the Nav for directions and using Paddle Shift, intermittently for no reason the DIC shows the Paddle Shift mode. I still have not been able to figure out why/when the door alarm sounds when the door is opened and from experience I am never really sure when my car is locked! Anne and I were amazed how much we could stow in the cargo compartment as we acquired ―memento’s‖ along the way. One interesting aspect, we were able to be at the start, middle and end points of Route 66. The car performed flawlessly; we put on 7,523 miles, visited 23 states and got 28.5 mpg on the return trip. While traveling through the upper US states we got lost a few times, but amaz-ingly each time we did these side trips turned into lost treasures of experi-ences and sights that we would have otherwise missed! However we did pass up the opportunity to visit the Industry & Labor Museum, and the RV & Motor Home Museums; one must be really tired or needing a rest stop to drop in here. Here’s a few things we noted that we didn’t particularly care for: endless toll roads in the Northeast; the beating the car took on parts of Interstate 80; see-sawing back in forth in the back half of a cara-van; driving with trucks ahead of you, behind you, and beside you; and being seen in a dirty Corvette. A very special part of the trip was visiting with Marines I served with in Vietnam and Quantico that we had not seen in 40 years! We will be holding a 2010 planning meeting on 17 October. If you have any runs in mind you would like to see, please contact one of the board members and give them the info. We had a great turnout to the meeting in August, would like to encourage you attend once again. Good food, great information, and excellent interaction with friends; you can’t beat it. Hope to see you at the next meeting on Tuesday 6 October.

Caravan Wrap Up Labor Day weekend 2009 saw one of the world’s largest moving automotive events take place as Corvettes from all over the country participated in Caravan 09. Over 4,500 Corvettes came from all over the United States, Canada, Netherlands, the UK and Australia ending up in Bowling Green, Ky.

The National Corvette Museum held a ribbon cutting ceremony welcoming Corvette enthusiasts to the newly expanded 115,000 sq. ft. facility, and hosted a five-day event that included a special exhibit of rare Corvettes, seminars with Corvette de-signers, engineers and experts, GM Assembly Plant tours, road trips, drag racing, autocross and a surprise appearance by the Stingray Corvette concept car that played the role of ―Sideswipe‖ in the Paramount film Transformers 2: Re-venge of the Fallen.

Here are some interesting facts about the caravan:

· There were 25 separate Caravans that arrived in Bowling Green.

Some were made up of 2-3 smaller caravans. The largest was com-

posed of over 900 Corvettes

· Over 4,500 Corvettes in attendance

· 5,290 people were registered for the event

· The overall event attendance topped 24,000

· 1,875 enthusiasts became new members of the Museum

It was a wonderful experience!

Participant Impressions

From the passenger seat of the lead car While Hib was trying to keep things running smoothly I was getting on my knees and turning around in the front seat looking back and seeing the Caravan of Vettes. Wow! It wasn’t hard to take pictures because with all the Corvettes and smiling Corvetter’s there were plenty of photo ops. Whenever I was snapping pics, Inge was right there as well. We have documented each other taking photos the whole trip. In fact between Inge and I we probably took more photos than most people put miles on their cars during the caravan. I need more hard drive for storage. There was a lot of firsts for me from drinking Makers Mark and Squirt (thanks Bob) to flying in Jim’s airplane. I learned that yellow is the new red as we zoomed past four beautiful cars. (thanks Jim, an unforgettable ex-perience). Some of my favorite moments on the caravan was our club dancing the night away in Tucumcari. (Our president has the moves). How we brought the rain and lightning to Tucumcari just like in 2003. Stop-ping at the Midpoint Café and Snow Cap Drive in. Drawing the ticket in Oklahoma City and seeing the excite-ment as Sharon won the Goodyear tires.(and my banner Ha Ha). The Caravan from Kentucky Downs into Bowling Green despite the rain. It was fun visiting Paul and Barbara and John and Helen in North Carolina. It was fun listening to all their great stories by Citronella candles and being serenaded by Cicada bugs. Hib and I visited the Childress winery in NC and then went to Chicago for a few days. We drove parts of Route 66 starting at the beginning/ending in Chicago all the way home. We stopped at several great places such as Ariston Café, Ted Drewes Frozen Custard, Meramec Caverns, Route 66 Drive in, Four women on Route 66, U Drop Inn Shamrock and The Devils Rope Museum. We also stopped at Mid point café again for some of their Ugly pie crust pies and the snow cap drive in for more ice cream. There were lots of tour buses but no Corvettes. The Caravan 2009 must be over but it was great fun while it lasted.

Lt Sandy Rubel Halverson

I am still in awe of so many incredible cars and just being part of the caravan. It was a thrill to see our little cars everywhere you looked. I loved hearing the truck drivers talking about us and wondering what was going on. The hospitality of the participating Chevy dealers and the wonderful people in Elk City will definitely be remembered. All of the hard work and effort to make this adventure such a success is appreciated. The weather even held up for the most part on our way to Bowling Green. It was fun talking to other Corvette owners from across the country and sharing our enthusiasm. I enjoyed seeing the Museum remodel and our Club brick and member bricks but most of all I just enjoyed seeing all of the beautiful cars and knowing I have one too.

The Corvette Plant Tour was the highlight of our trip. To walk in and see the shell of the car and see all the puzzle pieces being put on and the very end when they turn the key and "Start the En-gine". It was great fun with everyone!!!!! This was a fantastic trip!!!!! If you have an op-portunity, go at least once, "Don't Miss It".

Marylyn & Ed Bruce

I can say I thoroughly enjoyed the totality of the NCM Corvette Caravan experience and especially the fact that I had the companionship of my son, Jeff, for 17 days. It was a once in a lifetime experience for me and can be attributed to all who had a part in the organization and implemetation of the caravan. We were also able to see relatives and friends in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Missouri on our return trip and enjoyed a visit to Mt. Rushmore.

Thore Edgren

On Friday the 27th, we left from SB for Bowling Green, picking up friends along the way, to be 13 SBCC vetts and then many others to total over 4,000 vetts. We saw many, many vetts in the front window and in the rear mirror … all just too beautiful. Many fun stops along the 2,330 mile trip, my personal favorites were the Elk City carousel ride; ice cream in Seligman; the Adrian, TX, Mid-point café & with many vetts and the miles of Route 66 back roads in Arizona & Oklahoma, with old Burma Shave signs. Several vette groups stopped in Flagstaff to laugh at Black Bart’s musical review and eat good western food washed down with good beer. The locals at our many stops along the way were very happy to see us with our many fun cars and will enjoy the profits of our many pur-chases. Premium gasoline was less than $2.50 per gallon for 93 octane, rather than our over $3.50 for 91. Soon many beautiful cars, new friends and much camaraderie, all made the Caravan a lot of fun for us first time caravaners. Much more to see and enjoy along the way and so many Corvettes with very creative ―ego‖ plates in evidence everywhere. In Bowling Green many things to do and see and see: shopping at the Cor-vette Store, our bricks at the NCM, tours of Bluegrass music, the Makers Mark distillery, a 1778 ghostly Tav-ern and Abe Lincoln’s birth cabin. At the end of all the Bowling Green fun and after a wonderful farewell party at the Wafer farm and flights over the area. On Sunday we took a group of 8 SB vetts and their friends to Paul & Barbara’s house via the 318 curves of Tail of the Dragon and beautiful parts of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Later after we waved good-bye to our fellow caravaners we had the itch to return to both, so we re-ran the curves of the 11 mile Dragon and the total 469 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway; although a little early, the leaves are starting to turn red, or-ange and gold. Now we are off to see the world including Mackinaw Island; Sturgis; Sterling, KS; the Grand Tetons; and LeMans Races in Monterey. The roads promise many old barns, some covered bridges and photo opportunities along the many curvy back roads.

What a great trip, the first half being the Corvette Caravan to Bowling Green. After the Museum and a trip to the Mariano’s in North Carolina, Anne and I went up into Pennsylvania via the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains, and then through Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Iowa, into South Dakota and Mt Rushmore/Custer State Park, then on to Reno Nevada for the Air Races. We put 7,523 miles on our 2009 and it ran like a charm the whole way. Some of the things we absolutely loved about the trip: touring the Corvette Factory, getting 28.5 MPG on the entire return trip, dancing the night away in Tucumcari, seeing hundreds of Corvettes, traveling through Amish country in Pennsylvania and Indiana, $2.76 for 93 Octane, seeing herds of Buffalo and Pronghorn Sheep in South Dakota and Wyoming, visiting with friends we have not seen in 40 years, and everything about the Air Races in Reno! Of course there were many other great experiences but these rise to the top.

Fred & Anne Lopez

This was our third caravan and we still had a ball! Yes, we stopped in the same places as we did the first two times (how many people can say they have been to Tucumcari, New Mexico, THREE times?!!) but that didn’t matter. The experience was still amazing. We enjoyed every minute of it and at each and every stop we had memorable adventures. It was absolutely wonderful that so many of our club members made the commit-ment to take this trip and that’s what made it so special. The people. It was so nice to be able to spend time with everyone and to get to know people better. We do have a great club! It was also pretty amazing that we did not have one pulled pork or BBQ’d pork lunch or dinner!!! Not even one. A special thanks to Paul and Barbara Mariano for inviting our caravan participants to their beautiful home in North Carolina. Most of our group extended their trips the extra two days to include this party and I know everyone enjoyed it. We all had a great time and we want to thank the Mariano’s for their generous hospitality and the delicious food. The most difficult part of the trip was at the end when we parted company and every-one went off on their own adventures. It was lonely and we missed the com-panionship of all of the other caravaners. Thanks to everyone for such a fabulous trip.

Frank and Barbara LoMonaco

The caravan to Bowling Green was an incredible trip. It was so much fun to see all of the exciting places and to have Inge explain so much about the history as we traveled through Arizona and New Mexico especially (gotta love that CB!). We met at the reform point at Kentucky Downs for the last leg of the caravan to the museum and as it happened, we were about the 7th or 8th car in line. After traveling the 20 or so miles, we came off of the freeway, circled around the GM assembly plant parking lot and then had to wait at a red light before going on into the museum. One of the most awesome sights we had was the looooong line of Corvettes we saw still coming off of the freeway as we headed to the Museum. Beautiful, indeed!!!!! It was an amazing trip that we will definitely plan to do again!

Tony and Paula Megowan

Our favorite memories of the Caravan: Flying down I-15 in 5 lanes with Corvettes everywhere when we first left Ontario. The Snow Cap Restaurant. Our wonderful rooms in Little America and dinner at Black Barts with those talented young people singing and seeing the Gressinghs again.. Elk City was fun. The DUCKS in Lit-tle Rock were so delightful. The unexpected find of the Loretta Lynn Restaurant in Tennessee. Spending money at the museum. Loved our day going to Makers Mark and lunch at the Haunted restaurant. Going to Jim Wafer's ranch. Everything about it. Flying with Jim. Their wonderful dinner buffet. Getting to spend some time with Paul and Barbara. And finally, GETTING HOME
