October 2013
Welcome to The Rev’d.

of the Advent are excited and proud to an-
nounce the arrival of Fr. Rob in Williamston as
he begins his service to our parish as Priest in
Charge.
Fr. Rob comes to Advent from St.
James, Wilmington where he served as Associ-
ate Priest to the Rector and Priest at Saint
Mary’s Episcopal/Lutheran Church, Burgaw,
NC. Prior to St. James, Fr. Rob was Rector of
St. John’s Episcopal Church, Charleston, SC
and St. Christopher’s, Elizabethtown, NC. Fr.
Rob worked bivocationally as a principal at
Pender High School and East Bladen High
School.

Shared Ministry to be held during the 11 a.m.

Katherine Manning Skinner, Edwin Robinson, and Marjorie Dunn Drake. NOTE: If you
look closely, you can see what the chancel looked like prior to the fire of 1961. The lectern is
an eagle holding the Bible on its wings and the credence table is anchored by the marble me-
morial plaque to The Rev’d. Thomas Benbury Haughton that is now mounted in the narthex.
Outreach provides food
boxes for seniors
Each day the local Senior Center en-
sures that over 250 participants receive one
meal a day, either by feeding at the Center or by
home delivery.
But some days the Center is closed due
to holidays or bad weather and the feeding pro-
gram is interrupted.
Therefore, the Center’s staff prepares
and delivers a box of food to each participant
with enough foodstuffs to provide ten meals that
meet the Recommended Daily Allowance for
nutrition.
Although the Center receives food for
the boxes through the Albemarle Food Bank,
the Food Bank does not provide any meat.
Parishioners will find requests posted in
the narthex. The collection will continue
through October with delivery to the Center
during the first week of November.
Any foodstuffs not used in the boxes
will go into the Center’s pantry or to the Social
Services pantry.
Schola Cantorum visits
Advent
On October 13, 2013, Schola Cantorum
will present a service of Choral Evensong at the

light reception in the parish hall.
Schola Cantorum is a group of volun-
teer master choristers drawn from throughout
the Diocese of East Carolina. They perform in
churches throughout East Carolina and the na-
tion. Advent’s own Christine Chesson is a for-
mer member of Schola as is The Rev. Adele D.
Hatfield, our former organist and choirmaster
currently serving as Co-Rector of St. Peter’s
Episcopal Church, Mountain Lakes, New Jersey
Evensong is service of sung Evening
Prayer Similar to Morning Prayer in structure,

A note to the parish
Our Dear Friends,
Lucy and I have recently returned from
a fifteen day adventure in Europe.
We began with three days in Prague, a
seven day cruise down the Danube which in-
cluded numerous daily tours in the Czech Re-
public, Germany and Austria and ending with a
three day stay in Budapest. It was a delightful
and exciting trip.
We were able to embark upon this trip
because of your great kindness, thoughtfulness
and generosity when you presented us with a
very special retirement gift. We were humbled
at the time and are very grateful for providing
us this opportunity. We have decided that if
we ever have a second home, it will be in the
Austrian country-side near Salzburg, at least
for the four months of summer!
We are very pleased for our parish
family that a new priest is among you to serve
as pastor to the Advent family. I know you
will warmly welcome Rob and wish each of
you and Rob God’s blessings and our best
wishes for your marvelous new relationship.
We are very grateful to have each of
you as our friends.
With great affection,
Lucy & Jim
Three feasts observed
in October
The Episcopal Church recognizes three
(3) principal feast days on the calendar of the
church year during the month of October.
The Feast of Saint Luke the Evangel-
ist is observed on Friday, October 18. Almost all that we know about Luke
comes from the New Testament. He was a phy-
sician (Col 4:14), a companion of Paul on some
of his missionary journeys (Acts 16:10ff;
20:5ff; 27-28). Material found in his Gospel
and not elsewhere includes much of the account
of Our Lord's birth and infancy and boyhood,
some of the most moving parables, such as that
of the Good Samaritan and that of the Prodigal
Son, and three of the sayings of Christ on the
Cross: "Father, forgive them," "Thou shalt be
with me in Paradise," and "Father, into thy
hands I commend my spirit." The Acts of the
Apostles is also attributed to Saint Luke.
Saint James of Jerusalem, the
Brother of Our Lord Jesus Christ is honored
on Wednesday, October 23. He was for many years the leader of the
Christian congregation in Jerusalem, and is gener-
ally supposed to be the author of the Epistle of
James, although the Epistle itself does not state this
explicitly. He was martyred in Jerusalem in 62 A.D.
There will be a 5.45 p.m. Holy Eucharist on this day
in the church.
Saints Simon and Jude, Apostles of
Our Lord are remembered on Monday, Oc-
tober 28.
Simon and Jude are traditionally listed
as the tenth and eleventh apostles. Some ancient
Christian writers say that Simon and Jude went to-
gether as missionaries to Persia, and were martyred
there.
UTO Fall Ingathering
Sunday, October 20
Our parish will celebrate the United
Thank Offering fall ingathering this year on
October 20, 2013 during our 11:00 a.m. service
of Holy Eucharist.
United Thank Offering (UTO) is a min-
istry of the Episcopal Church for the mission of
the whole church.
Through United Thank Offering, men,
women, and children nurture the habit of giving
daily thanks to God.
These prayers of thanksgiving start
when we recognize and name our many daily
blessings.
Those who participate in UTO discover
that thankfulness leads to generosity.
United Thank Offering is entrusted to
promote thank offerings, to receive the offer-
ings, and to distribute the UTO monies to sup-
port mission and ministry throughout the Epis-
copal Church and in invited Provinces of the
Anglican Communion in the developing world.
If you are unable to attend church on
October 20 and wish to contribute to UTO,
please feel free to put your UTO envelope in
the alms basin on any Sunday this month. If
you need an UTO envelope or want to learn
more about UTO, contact our parish UTO
chairwoman, Frankie Biggs at 792.2227.
Piano & Organ Concert
Bob and Susan Davis will present a Pi-
ano and Organ Concert on Sunday, October 6 at
4 p.m. at Memorial Baptist Church. Williams-
ton. This concert is given in thanksgiving to
God and in celebration of the tenth anniversary
of Bob’s successful liver transplant. (Susan is
the daughter of Betty Lou Taylor)
Are you an Organ Donor? You could
save a life if you are.

Search and Nominations Committee for the
VIII Bishop of East Carolina in Greenville on
September 24 in Greenville at the home of Dr.
and Mrs. Richard and Cheryl Taft.
Miss Amanda Smith continues to
receive accolades for her work as a teacher.
Amanda was selected as the Teacher of the
Year at Beaufort Early College and runner-up
to Best Teacher in Beaufort County.
Mr. Jess Miller’s “freezer pleaser”
was a resounding success and he extends his
thanks to all in the Advent family that
supported his project to raise funds for his
Eagle Scout project.
Mrs. Ann Slade sends her thanks to all
in the Advent family for their thoughts, prayers
and well-wishes.

Welcome to The Episco-
pal Church!
What is the Episcopal Church, and
what do Episcopalians believe? The Episcopal Church (TEC) is the of-
ficial organization of the Anglican Communion
in the United States and in surrounding coun-
tries such as the Dominican Republic, Panama,
and Haiti. Most of the earliest colonists to
America were Anglican Puritans, and the An-
glican Church became the established church of
Virginia, Maryland, New York, North Carolina,
South Carolina, and Georgia during the colonial
period. After the American Revolution, the An-
glican Church in America formed an independ-
ent body in 1789 and called it the Protestant
Episcopal Church. On the website, TEC is de-
scribed as a “middle way between Roman
Catholic and Protestant traditions.” Like the
Catholic Church, the Episcopal Church upholds
the sacraments as essential to salvation, and like
Protestant churches, it denies the supremacy of
the Pope as the vicar of Christ on earth.
The word “Episcopal” comes from the
Greek word that is usually translated “bishop”
and points to the church's understanding that a
bishop is the primary shepherd of the church.
Under the Episcopal form of government, the
bishop's authority is equal to that of the Apos-
tles and follows a line of succession by the lay-
ing on of hands in ordination. Priests come un-
der the authority of the bishops and are respon-
sible for the teaching and administration of the
local churches. Throughout the history of TEC
their doctrine and practice have been generally
in line with that of the Anglican Church.
What Do Episcopalians Believe?
We believe there is One God who cre-
ates all things, redeems us from sin and death
and renews us as the Children of God. As Epis-
copalians we promise to follow Jesus Christ as
our Savior and Lord. We believe the mission of
our church is restoration of all people to unity
with God and each other in Christ.
