Off-Broadway theaters produce hundreds of new works each season, though many only run for a few weeks and are seen by small audiences. Theater Close-Up changes that. A unique collaboration between THIRTEEN and a large community of Off-Broadway theaters, Theater Close-Up brings a diverse cross-section of those provocative plays to primetime and online audiences. The inaugural season, hosted by stage and screen actress Sigourney Weaver (Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike), opens with John Van Druten’s London Wall from the Mint Theater Company on October 6. London Wall explores the tumultuous lives and love affairs of the women employed as shorthand typists in a busy solicitor’s office in 1930’s London. The 1931 play was acclaimed for its hyper-realistic depiction of office life as well as its soulful probing of the dreams and desires of its female characters. On October 13, Brian Richard Mori’s Hellman v. McCarthy, brings to life the greatest literary feud in modern American history, as author Mary McCarthy antagonizes playwright Lillian Hellman on The Dick Cavett Show in 1980. Also in the pipeline of upcoming plays are Richard Nelson’s The Apple Family Plays, a set of four plays that examine one fictitious liberal family’s politics, anxieties and values as they try to navigate family and country in Rhinebeck, New York, and Denis O’Hare and Lisa Peterson’s An Iliad, an adaptation of Homer’s epic poem and an account of humanity’s unshakable attraction to violence, destruction and chaos. Embarking on this new adventure, Theater Close-Up provides New Yorkers with unparalleled access to one of the City’s greatest underexposed cultural assets. SciTech Now SciTech Now is a new weekly half-hour newsmagazine program focusing on “the nexus of new ideas.” Hosted by Hari Sreenivasan, anchor of PBS NewsHour Weekend and a senior correspondent for the nightly program, SciTech Now tackles topics including technology, scientific discovery and innovation.
