BASS 4BASS 4BASS 4---111---111 October is a really busy month in
the life of BASS. We started off with
the Oktoberfest! I hope the kids had
fun popping balloons with darts and
tossing bean bags! Staff and kids enjoy
seeing each other out of their school
environment.
This week we hope to see all of
our families at Paradise Park for our
annual Lights On Afterschool Event.
Many of you know this goes down in
the history of BASS as one of the Kids’
favorite experience. We so appreciate
all that Paradise Park does to make
this a success. In celebration of the
Royals, we are encouraging everyone
to wear Royal Blue. “BE ROYAL”!
Site Coordinators are working on
Snow Day lesson plans as well as les-
son plans for all of the non-school
days in October.
Thank you to all of our families
who took time to com-
plete our surveys at the
end of the last school
year and this summer. We are using
the information to make changes that
are possible.
Read closely the field trip sched-
ule and the combo group schedules on
page 2. If you have any questions,
please contact your Site Coordinator.
Mark your calendar for Parents’
Night Out December 12. This will be a
great opportunity for the kids to have
a fun night while you take care of a
“To Do” on your list.
And lastly, BASS is excited to an-
nounce that the KC Cubbies program
will be expanding in January. Our new
location will be at 1151 NE Colbern
Road next to the BASS Administrative
Office.

 Parent Handbook Amendment 2014-15
1. Parent/guardians are required to sign their child in and out each day. It is expected that upon entering the
building, parent/guardian goes directly to the designated Kids Country area to sign in. Upon signing out, it is
expected that the parent/guardian leaves the building immediately via the approved exit door/route. Failure
to follow this procedure may result in dismissal from the program.
2. If a child is suspended from school during the school day, the child will not be allowed to attend Kids Country
during the period of suspension per Board Policy. If a child is suspended directly from Kids Country, it would
not carry over to the regular school day.

Underwood Kids Country is preparing for a great fall season. We will
be going on nature walks and watching for all the signs of “Fall”. We
are looking forward to our first field trip with our friends to the
Pumpkin Patch.
BCMS 3LYNX students are mak-
ing new friends and helping out
the Kids Country kids with
homework and art projects.
Sometimes we just hang out in our space at Underwood. The gym is
our favorite place to go, where we can work off a lot of energy.
Prairie View Kids
Country older kids are in full swing designing and planning
for our annual Haunted House!
They are super excited about it
and look forward to it every year.
At Woodland Kids Country Sep-
tember was all about respect. Our
staff, Ms. Melanie made a "giving
tree" in the reading area. Any time a child is caught being respectful or kind to an-
other child, they get to put an apple on the tree. The child writes what they did on
the apple and then hangs it on the tree. Once we get 100 apples, we will earn a
special surprise!
The Longview Farm children have been busy making up fun bulletin boards/displays. The one they had the
most fun with was making a large group of owls sitting on tree branches. The boys in our Older Kids Club
have been busy putting together a vehicle pulling a trailer and an airplane, both of which have real motors
and can move!

GERMS ARE EVERYWHERE
It seems like just about everyone has
a cell phone now days, even young chil-
dren. Many children have iPods and other
hand held gaming systems that they share
with their friends. Most of us have remote
controls for the TV, game systems and
garage doors. In living out our day we
touch all kinds of things and places such as
ATM’s, shopping cart handles, door knobs,
elevator buttons, office phones, light
switches, drinking fountain controls, gaso-
line pumps, and the list goes on and on.
Because GERMS ARE EVERYWHERE, the
best way to combat illness due to expo-
sure to germs is good hand washing.
FYI—Cell phones use energy, which
creates heat, which then creates a perfect
breeding ground for germs. A cell phone
may carry 10 times more bacteria than
most toilet seats. According to Women’s
Health Magazine, 1 in 6 cell phones are
contaminated with fecal matter that could
contain E-coli, a pathogen that can cause
severe illness and in some cases death.
Doctoral students at Stanford warn
“infectious microbes on the surface of a
smart phone – including staph and sea-
sonal flu – have an excellent chance of
making their way to your eyes, nose and
mouth” where they might have a good
chance of making you ill. The places where
we store our phones (think warm dark
purse) also contribute to the growth of
germs.
What to do? Of course the greatest
deterrent to becoming ill is cleanliness. It
is recommended by many sources that
you clean your phones once or twice a
week. Not only clean the phone, but also
the case. AT&T recommends squeezing
the liquid out of an antibacterial wipe and
gently cleaning the phone. Don’t spray
your phone with anything. Some sources
said to use alcohol
and a clean cloth;
some sources said
alcohol can damage
phones. There is also VIOLight—a UV Light
System designed to kill germs on cell
phones. It is also a good idea to clean
common gadgets like remotes and door
knobs.
The single most important thing you
can do to help yourself stay healthy and
prevent the spread of germs is to wash
your hands several times a day. It is a
good idea to include cell phones and gadg-
ets in your weekly cleaning schedule. It is
also recommended that sharing of cell
phones and other hand held devices be
held to a minimum because...

Before & After School Advisory Council
The BASS Advisory Council met for this year’s first
meeting on Thursday, Sept. 25th. The following are brief
reports from each committee.
The TEAM BASS project of creating a “Peace Garden”
on the BASS Administrative lawn is in the final stages. If
winter weather doesn’t slow the construction plans, BASS
staff and community will be able to enjoy the peace and
tranquility of a beautiful Spring garden. Developing a Re-
cruitment plan for qualified School Age Care staffing is the
next project for TEAM BASS.
The AIQ (Awareness, Inclusion, Quality) Committee
met on 9-25-14 at BCMS. We reviewed the purpose and
desired outcomes of the committee. After much discus-
sion, it was decided that the committee will pursue an
enrichment curriculum to help our students learn about
other cultures. The Committee will look into working on
this along with students from Summit Tech Academy, who
have assisted us the past two years by presenting “French
Club” at some of our sites. Thank you to the parents who
are a part of our committee.
Chore Core discussed many projects,
ideas and events happening this school
year. We reviewed our Lights On After-school event, Ok-
toberfest, Parents’ Night Out, school year curriculum and
more. We also talked about the possibility of compiling a
list of different community service projects that each of
our schools could use to assist them in finding a charity to
partner with. Our goal is to compile a list by the end of
the year. Please email any suggestions you might have to
Ryan at: [email protected].
Below are the dates of future meetings to add to your
calendar if you would like to be involved in providing
feedback and input for these meetings.
Thursday, January 22 (inclement weather date of
February 5)
 Thursday, April 23

This was the third year that BASS participated in Lee’s Summit’s downtown Oktoberfest celebration on Kids Street. The weather was beautiful and we saw a great turnout of families who came by to say hello. We enjoyed getting to play the games with kids and hope to see
everyone next year. Congratulations to the West family at Underwood Elementary Kids Coun-
try who was drawn to receive a free month’s tuition for BASS!
