He got caught up in the1950s Bossa Nova craze that swept Rio DeJaneiro, Brazil, eventually emerging as one ofthe genre’s pioneers.

By the 1960s, Mendes and his band Brasil’66 had mesmerized Americans withtheir own twist on Samba-basedrhythms.

Held this year on Sunday, Oct. 26, eventorganizer Tom Lasser of the Los Alamitos AreaChamber of Commerce expects tens ofthousands of visitors of all ages to visit theBase for an opportunity to see hundreds ofcars, dozens of fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters,and first responders.

The prima donna of the show just couldbe a returning Predator drone from March AirBase — watch for it between the hangars justinside the Airfield entry gate!

Nobody but nobody should miss anoutstanding new attraction this year — atroupe of Star Wars re-enactors in fullcostume and in character!

Young pilots-to-be will again have anopportunity to fly like an eagle through thegenerosity of members of the Experimental

Aircraft Association’s Young Eagles program.To qualify for a free flight, a youngster mustbe between the ages of 8 and 17. A waivermust be filled out and signed by a parent orguardian prior to flying.

Everyone young at heart should surelyvisit Kid’s Korner for kid-friendly activities. Thisyear, a dunk tank will be manned bymembers of the Los Alamitos FirefightersAssociation (the Base fire department) toraise funds for Quest for Burn Survivors. Atthier own food booth, the firefightes will alsoserve up nachos for hungry guests.

Everyone coming on the Base will need topresent a government-issued photo ID —and, please, no dogs, alcohol or smoking onthe tarmac of Los Alamitos Army Airfield.
