WHO WE ARE

08 13MARINE CORPS COMMUNITY SERVICES // IWAKUNI, JAPAN

I would like to star t of f this month by first recognizing our MCCS/MCAS team for the great job they did in preparing for this year’s Summer Music Festival. I think this was one of the finest family events of the year, the kids had a blast and the adults were able to spend a quality evening with their families in a relaxed atmosphere. A special shout out to Larry Mask our events coordinator, PMO, Safety, Op’s, Chad Landry our Club Manager, and their team of professionals. It was a flawless event and the rain held out just long enough for the fireworks. I cannot stress enough how impor tant the team ef for t was between the Station and MCCS during Friendship Day. The money we raised went directly towards making this a free event for our community. Thank you for your suppor t.

In October, MCCS is preparing for the upcoming Ball season and Holidays. The Dry Cleaners and Tailor Shops are busy making final alterations and the Beauty Salon is booking appointments for the ladies. In the midst of these preparations I would like to say Happy Bir thday to our Navy family, serving our country since October 13, 1775. The Navy Ball is on October 11 and will be held at Club Iwakuni Grand Ballroom. While this month ushers in a time for celebration, it is impor tant to note that October is also a month dedicated to several impor tant awareness campaigns.

October is federally recognized as National Disabilit y Employment Awareness Month. This month acknowledges those who overcome challenges and par ticipate in our workforce. In 1990, congress took the first step towards fighting the stigma of mental illness by establishing Mental Illness Awareness Week. Despite their illness, people like Vincent van Gogh, Jack Kerouac, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and countless other non-celebrities contribute to our community in many ways. We think of them this month and recognize both their challenges and achievements.

Perhaps the most visible awareness campaign this month is associated with the colors Red, Pink and Purple. Red Ribbon Week suppor ts Substance Abuse Awareness, pink calls awareness to Breast Cancer Prevention and purple is the color associated with Domestic Violence Awareness. These colors serve as the foundation for our October 11 MCCS Ribbon Awareness Color Run, a collaboration of Behavioral Health and Athletics. The following week, October 18 & 19, MCCS Services hosts the Annual Fall Bazaar and on October 19, Club Iwakuni will host its annual Fall Harvest festival, an adult’s night to relax and unwind af ter a day of shopping the Fall Bazaar. For those that want a quick adventure in our host nation, schedule October 13 for Yoshino River Raf ting with our Outdoor Recreation team or reserve October 21 for a lit tle Kintai Yoga with Health Promotions.

Our air station youth kick of f the Marine Corps Ball season on October 24. The MCCS Youth and Teen Center hosts the Mini Marine Corps Ball and for those who are too young for the ball, the MCCS Library of fers Halloween at the Library. The next day the kids join Health Promotions for the Super Hero Fun Run. Summer might be over and the holidays are on the way, but MCCS still has plenty of activities to keep you busy in between. Please stay safe.

“Semper Fi” John Iwaniec Marine Corps Community Services Director

Ikebana, the Japanese art of ower arrangement is much more than

just placing owers in a vase. The art dates back over 500 years and

is a cultural art form in modern-day Japan. Ikebana signi es the

appreciation for the beauty of nature, and is a long held tradition.

Silence is encouraged while practicing the art, as it provides the

opportunity to appreciate things in nature often overlooked in our

busy lives.

Along with the landscape, Ikebana pieces transform throughout

the year to become displays of the season. Fresh owers, leaves,

berries, branches and even fruits can become components of a

beautiful Ikebana arrangement. Because the art makes use of

asymmetrical form and empty space, Ikebana pieces are original,

clean and one of a kind.

Ways to save in Iwakuni

It’s been a little over a year since my family and I landed in Iwakuni. It has been a won-

derful year of exploration and adjusting, big emphasis on adjusting: to the weather, to the culture, and to the various costs associated with overseas living. Wanting to keep with our savings goals, I had to discover new ways to save money while stationed in Iwakuni. The following list are tips I have adopted for my own family and tips that others have shared with me:

FoodCoupons are accepted at the commissary for 6 months after the expiration date. Pre-clipped coupons can be found in bins located in the library in building 411 or at the commissary.

Don’t want to deal with loose coupons? Pick up a Commissary Rewards Card at the commissary. Register your card on-line at www.commissaries.com/re-wards/ and save by loading digital cou-pons to the card. Coupons can be loaded via Smartsource.com or you can down-load the Commissary Rewards - Digital Grocery app onto various smart phones and tablets.

Ask for a Frequency Card at the Crossroads Food Court, purchase nine value meals and receive the 10th value meal FREE.

Grocery stores out in town are known to have special discounts on specific days of the week. A Cultural Adaptation Specialist for I&R provided a map of Japanese gro-cery stores nearby and sales they have during the month.

ShoppingWhen shopping at the Marine Corps Exchange, it is a good idea to save your re-ceipts. You can ask for a price adjustment if the price of the purchased item drops within 2 weeks of your purchased date. The policy can and has been modified, so do ask the MCX for current price adjustment rules.

Take advantage of price matching at the Marine Corps Exchange .

Check out web shopping rebate sites (i.e. ebates.com, mrrebates.com, etc.) Most of these sites work on the premise that you will log into their site first and then link to your normal online stores via their site. A cash rebate is then given to you depending on dollars spent.

The Thrift store is a treasure trove for bar-gain shoppers. Active duty servicemem-bers can go there for FREE UNIFORMS and more. You will need to show your ID.

Before I complete an online order, I always search for discount codes for free ship-ping, percentages off, or free merchandise.

“Utilize Facebook for great local deals on furniture.” -Deanna O’Neal, Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) Director

TravelDo you have a flexible schedule? Space-A it. Alexandra Patrocino, LifeSkills Trainer with MCFTB states, “the next Space-A Travel Brief will be in November.”

Rent a car at Car Rental if you plan to drive far. The savings on tolls can be significant.

Sign up for an ETC card. The ETC system allows cars equipped with the technology to drive through toll roads without hav-ing to stop, and every month all the toll charges get automatically deducted from the credit card on file. Some tolls are re-duced with the use of the ETC card.

“Staycation” at one of the local beaches. -Deanna O’Neal

Entertainment Visit the library. Did you know that you can download music for FREE? Read mag-azines and newspapers for FREE? Get audio and e-books for FREE?!?Like their Facebook page at MCCS Iwakuni-Library and keep up to date with all the various events they host throughout the year.

MagicJack, TextNow, and Skype are just a few of the apps that I use to keep in contact with family back home.

A movie junkie? Buy the 10-punch Reel Card and get the 11th visit free. My favor-ite part of the Reel Card is that I can skip the long ticket line on Premiere nights.

“Japanese parks, like Kuga Park and Hachigamine Park, have great free activi-ties for kids.” -Deanna O’Neal

EducationVisit the Education Office, first floor of building 411, for Tuition Assistance (TA) and scholarship information. The profes-sionals at the Education office can help you map out an education plan that work with your goals and budget.

Ask UMUC or CTT representatives about their scholarship information. My hus-band received $150 scholarship for books last term.

Again, the library is a great resource. The library has a book swap where you can look for used textbooks.

Want to learn Japanese? You can learn the basics for FREE using Transparent Language (a mobile application that can be used outside of the library) or Rosetta Stone (only offered in the library).

Here are some more of my favorite tips from Deanna O’Neal, the NMCRS Director:

Take advantage of the IronWorks gym: the FREE aerobics classes, the incredibly discounted youth activities, free swim-ming and the Outdoor Recreation lending services.

Track your spending. Get receipts every-where, know how you spend at the end of the week, and write it down or take a pic-ture of the receipts. My most used Japanese phrase is “reshiito kudasai”, which means receipt please. Tracking yen and dollar spending can significantly reduce excess spending. When you know how much you are spending, you will spend less.

Set up allotments on MyPay or automatic electronic transfers at your bank for sav-ings and for bills to make sure they are paid before any other money is spent. “Pay yourself first.” It’s easier to save money if you never actually see it in your account.

I adore Japan. I hope you find the same enjoyment from this beautiful country and can enjoy all the experiences that it has to offer, without breaking the bank. Samuel Johnson said it best, “A man who both spends and saves money is the happiest man, because he has both enjoyments.”

Each year, the holidays sneaks up on us. It ’s a busy, stressful time, and being away from friends and family can make it even more challenging. Not to fear: below are some

examples from folks who have experienced a few holidays away from home. Check out how they made their time in Japan an experience they will never forget!

"The holidays should be filled with

love, joy and happiness, not stress!"

For many of you, this will be your first holiday season in Iwakuni and

you might have mixed emotions. You may feel sadness because you

are away from family. Chances are you’ll be stressed because you are

trying to shop and can’ t find what you are looking for locally. You might

feel overwhelmed because you are overbooked with obligations, parties

and events. And let ’s not forget about getting holiday cards in the mail on

time. Well that is basically what I was feeling my first year in Iwakuni! I’m

determined for this season to be a little easier now that I know what to

expect.I’m sad to be away from family during the holidays! Get together with friends

for a “potluck style” holiday dinner and gift exchange. It ’s always fun to

do a potluck and try other families's traditional dishes. It ’s less stressful

when you don’ t have to cook an entire meal. Don’ t forget about all those single

Marines who would love a home cooked meal…invite them over too. You can always

take advantage of Club Iwakuni’s special holiday meals, or better yet start a

new tradition of going out to a local sushi restaurant for the holidays…we are in

Japan, after all. Lastly, open presents with family while on Facetime or Skype.

It ’s almost as good as being together.

Oh no…I haven’ t bought one gift and it ’s December already! I’m planning ahead this

year and have been buying gifts throughout the year while on vacation. Last year,

the Four Seasons gift shop upstairs in the MCX was a lifesaver for my last minute

shopping. Also, buying gifts at the MCX in July will earn you Santa Bucks. You’ll not only

save money, it puts you ahead of the game making December a little less stressful!

I forgot to order Holiday Cards, they’ll never get to the states on time!

With our busy schedule and numerous events last year, our holiday cards just slipped

my mind. Smilebox.com saved me last year! It ’s a website where you can create a

slideshow of pictures with a greeting and it can be emailed to anyone for free! It

was not only super fast, easy and free, it was also eco-friendly!

The holidays are overwhelming! I think all of us need to learn to say “no” to some

things, especially during the holidays. The holidays should be filled with

love, joy and happiness, not stress! I will try to take my own advice

this year! Here’s to a fabulous, stress-free upcoming holiday season!

The holidays are an especially difficult time for families stationed overseas. Luckily with today's

interactive technology offering programs like Face Time and Skype, keeping in touch is not nearly as

difficult, but can still pose a significant challenge with the drastic time difference. What helped my

family through the holiday season was making sure we were never alone. We've been fortunate with our

own extended Iwakuni family and our military community. We keep busy by planning events and holiday

parties. The benefit of planning and maintaining a busy schedule is that it keeps you focused on the

present and prevents you from fixating on the fact that family and old friends are thousands of miles

away.

For those families and single military members who would rather be alone with their family and friends,

I suggest spending money on a fun trip that would undoubtedly lead to great memories. Every time we

come back from a trip or help plan a holiday party, we always start prepping and planning for the next

one. By the time you've checked everything off your Japan bucket list (why limit yourselves to Japan

when space-A travel enables affordable travel all over the hemisphere?), it will be time to PCS back to

the states and you'll be reminiscing about all the great times you had while stationed in Japan.

Planning trips is surprisingly feasible. While the language barriers and cultural differences may

seem intimidating, you can always turn to some universally helpful tools like booking.com, Google,

TripAdvisor.com, and ITT (great for translating and info to help plan your trip). Before you know it,

you'll be undeterred by the cultural barriers and will be able to fully enjoy all there is to explore. Don't

worry, in our experience, the further away from Iwakuni you travel, the more local Japanese are able

to speak English. In fact, another great resource we often overlook are our host nation friends, many

of whom speak English fluently and are more than happy to be able to show off some of Japan's hidden

treasures. I have had the opportunity to make a few local friends that love to practice conversational

English and sharing all of the exciting places they've discovered. Don't be afraid to get out exploring

yourself. If my family can do it, so can yours! After all, you will only get out of your duty station and your

experience what you put into it. Take this opportunity to create ever lasting memories that you can

share with your friends and family back home. Before you know it, you'll be off on your next adventure.

Come check out our family adventures on Lantieri's in Japan on Facebook.

Happy travels!

Giovanni Lantieri (aka house hubby)

As the holiday season approaches, it ’s important to stay busy in a valuable way. There are so many ways to make a positive impact on our base community and thrive during this busy time of year. For example, volunteer with your unit, cook dinner for a new mom or someone in need, sign-up with MCFTB and become a mentor. MCFTB offers amazing classes and training such as L.I.N.K.S that give wonderful opportunities to learn more about the Marine Corps as well as the resources and services here on base. It is also a valuable tool in getting to know new spouses and those that are more “seasoned.” I have taken L.I.N.K.S at almost duty station and even after my 5th class, I found that I learn something new every time and make new, long lasting friendships. If you find yourself experiencing a case of "base fever", get out and explore! Living in a foreign country is truly a unique opportunity. Attend a local festival or take a train to a new destination. ITT and its friendly and knowledgeable staff have countless suggestions and flyers on all of the incredible sights Japan has to offer. For those of you that have recently relocated to MCAS Iwakuni, I would highly recommend a trip over to Outdoor Recreation (located in the Ironworks Gym) to check out all of the fantastic gear that you can borrow free of charge. There is something for everyone, including sleds and snowboards! The local mountains are only a short drive away, just West of Iwakuni. So much fun!

MCCS offers several exciting activities to look forward to during the holiday season. The Jingle Bell Jog is a great way to get some exercise and get in the holiday spirit! MCFTB has a Cookie Exchange. Additionally, most of the units will host holiday parties and events. Finally, but most important...remember the simple things, make family your priority and make as many memories in Japan as possible. The place we call home today may be different next month or next year. There is one constant in a happy/successful military family and that constant is adaptability. Stay positive and focus on the benefits of living abroad. Happy Holidays! Sonia Basco

Being stationed overseas is an amazing opportunity that most of us embrace

completely; however, the holidays have a way of making even the most adventurous

among us a wee bit homesick! As a military brat and now military wife of over 16

years, I have spent many holidays away from family and have learned a lot of ideas

that will help make the holidays more bearable and maybe even better than you

hoped! Invite a group of friends over for the holidays; you can make it a potluck with

the ‘must have’ dishes from everyone’s family gatherings and even book a community

room free of charge if you don’t want to clean house! If the culinary arts are not

your forte, forgo cooking altogether and get a group of people together to go to the

holiday meal buffet at the club!

Every year I like baking sweets for my neighbors or having a cookie exchange

and you can never, bake too many. Don’t forget to take some of those goodies to

our Marines who work during the holidays such as PMO, the emergency clinic, and

the firehouse or even surprise some young Marines at the barracks! After you’ve

had your share of Christmas cookies, join in on the Jingle Bell Jog and dress up as

Santa or an Elf while doing it! To get that small town, wonderful feel, you should not

miss the lighting of the MCAS Iwakuni tree while sipping hot chocolate and wishing

so many familiar faces a happy holiday. At least once or twice, my family piles into

the car and drives around base to see the decorated houses all lit up! Also, do not

miss the holiday lights in Hiroshima during December, they are beautiful and you

can stop at Starbucks for a cup of joe or hot chocolate to carry around with you!

Another tradition of mine is to watch my favorite Christmas movies; you can do this

throughout the month of December or make it a movie marathon! There are also a

couple of organizations on base that visit local orphanages and provide the children

with gifts and a fun filled day spent together!

Whether stationed here as a single or unaccompanied military member, as a young

couple about to spend your first holiday away from home, or as a seasoned military

family, there are so many different activities that you can participate in! Keep your

family traditions alive and discover a few new ones to add to your holidays!

Amanda Hoskins

The holidays are right around the corner. Being

a military spouse can make the holiday season

seem a little daunting. Add the fact that you

are stationed overseas and the feelings can be

compounded. I will cherish all the memories made

here in Iwakuni with not only my military family but

my Japanese family as well.

There are so many things around the holidays

here in Iwakuni. Take a trip to the Chicken

Shack and enjoy all of the decorations and even

Santa! Or travel to the snow and go sledding,

skiing or snowboarding. Throw in all of the

festivities here on base and you will definitely

feel the holiday spirit. Here were a few of my

favorites from last year:

1. The tree lighting ceremony. Go out and enjoy

the hot cocoa, music from the elementary

school kids, the Christmas lights, food and a

visit from our very own Santa and Mrs.

Claus.

2. MCFTB hosts a cookie exchange.

Spouses from the community come out

to show their culinary skills. It is a way to get out

and mingle with others.

3. Dress up in your best holiday outfit, make it

funny or silly, and go run the Jingle Bell Jog. Bring

your kids, spouse or friends and make it a big

annual event while stationed here.

Whatever you do don’ t sit home feeling sorry that

you are missing out on the holidays back home.

Make new traditions, try new food, experience

the Japanese culture and enjoy your time here in

Japan because it will be over before you know it!

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH ARTICLE

What do the ribbon colors mean?

It is that time of the year when you will see people around base wearing different color

awareness ribbons in support of issues that are important to them. Did you know that there are actually 60 different awareness ribbons? Here is the meaning of three that you will see worn in

the month of October:

Come join Health Promotions, the Substance Abuse Counseling Center and the Family Advocacy Program at Penny Lake where these three ribbons will come together as part of the 1st Annual Ribbon Awareness Color Run. There will be carnival foods, raffles, music and Zumba demonstrations. All authorized personnel are welcome and Commander's Cup points will be awarded for Unit participation and best dressed.

Domestic violence can be physical, emotional, verbal, sexual, or spiritual. One in 4 women will experience domestic violence during her lifetime, and every year 1 in 3 women who is

a victim of homicide is killed by her current or former partner. BUT remember the

victims are not always women. At least one in 6 men report being in

an abusive relationship. Wear a purple ribbon to show

your support for domestic violence awareness.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in

women, and 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with it in their lifetime. It

is the 2nd leading cause of death in women. It may be rare in men, but an estimated 2,150 men a year are

diagnosed with it. Wear a light pink ribbon to show your support for breast

cancer awareness.

A red ribbon is worn in honor of Kiki Camarena who lost his life in 1985 while fighting to keep the United States drug free and to show a person’s commitment to a life of being drug free. The first Red Ribbon Week campaign happened in 1988, and it has been held annually since. Come and celebrate

Red Ribbon Week aboard MCAS Iwakuni from October 20-25.

Metabolic Mix Up After warming up, perform the following movements for 30 seconds at MAXIMUM effort. Rest for only 10 seconds between movements to ensure your heart keeps pumping through the whole cycle. After each full cycle, rest for 30-60

seconds and repeat 2-5 times.

The year has flown by and before we know it, the Marine Corps Ball will be

upon us! More than likely you have chosen or will choose a gown which will

highlight your best features. Whether you are going strapless or backless, now

is the time to start getting ready for the Ball! For this month try incorporating the routine below

into your current regimen and also be sure to complete 30-60 minutes of cardiovascular exercise (running, walking,

swimming, cycling, rowing, jumping rope) most days of the week! Don’t forget, no amount of training can make up

for poor nutrition! Eat clean, eat often, and hydrate!
