Did You Know...

Nutri on and Cancer

Is the food you eat raising or lowering your cancer risk? Almost every day you hear stories about foods that either raise or lower your risk for cancer. But it’s actually the amount of food you eat, not the kind, that affects your cancer risk the most, says Edward Sauter, MD, Ph.D., a cancer surgeon and na onally known researcher at UT Health Northeast.

“Maintaining a healthy weight is the most important thing you can do to lower your cancer risk. How much you eat is far more important than what you eat,” Dr. Sauter says. Ea ng too much can make you overweight or obese. While the leading cause of preventable cancers is s ll tobacco use, the second major cause is obesity.

“If we decrease the number of calories we consume, we are going to drama cally reduce our risk for cancer – by 30 percent according to some studies,” Dr. Sauter says. That said, some foods have been linked to cancer. A recent study found that ea ng a high‐protein diet during middle age (age 50‐65) increased the risk of dying from cancer by more than four mes. The same study found that ea ng more protein a er age 65 was actually a health benefit.

High fructose corn syrup is another food to avoid. It’s found in many foods, including salad dressing, yogurt, breakfast cereal, and soda, and has been shown to increase cancer risk. Read product labels and try to avoid it. How you cook food is also important. For example, cooking food on a grill forms nitrates, and nitrates are known to raise cancer risk, Dr. Sauter says. So, although you can s ll enjoy grilled foods occasionally, try to limit them to once or twice a month.

On a posi ve note, ea ng lots of crunchy vegetables – broccoli, kale, and cauliflower –has been shown to reduce your cancer risk, Dr. Sauter says.

The sales department was out in full force at the 50th anniversary of the American Society of Plumbing Engineers Expo. They used their time to promote using Tyler Pipe over import pipe from China and to promote the fact our product is made right here in the good old U.S.A by hard working Americans. The Engineers in attendance seem very receptive to the message.

The only way our pipe gets on major projects is for these Engineers to specify it. That is why it’s important for our team to continue to build good relationships with the Engineering Community.

Several Engineers that stopped by the booth said they were going to China to tour an importer’s facility. These same Engineers will soon tour Tyler Pipe. We hope they will see a difference between a product made in China and a product made by our hard working American Team. The Sales Team Members appreciate the hard work of the team in the

foundry. Making a superior product makes their job easier. Uç e|v{tÜw UÉãÅtÇ A

The I.T. Department has about 20 Personal

Computers and several laptops that are available for sale to Team Members on a

first come, first served basis. Each unit is priced at $25 and may be purchased in the East Office Building

Monday Through Wednesday between the

hours of 10:00 am and 3:00 pm.
