Heavily influenced by slashers of the late ‘70s/’80s it singlehandedly ushered in the return of the popular horror sub-genre. And yet, at the same time, it took a new stab at “the rules” (the virginal final girl, the bait and switch with the killer’s identity, eff and you’ll die, etc.). And to top it all off, a master of horror himself, the late Wes Craven sat behind the camera to riff on the very subgenre he helped pioneer. 10/6 HOUSE OF WAX 3D (1953) Back in the early ‘50s, 3D was something of a nine days’ won- der. Within a year, the fad faded, thanks to lots of mediocre quickies. But one that transcended the trend was Vincent Price’s HOUSE OF WAX, a nifty thriller adapted from Lionel Atwill and Fay Wray’s ‘33 hit THE MYSTERY OF THE WAX MU- SEUM. If you saw HOUSE OF WAX in 3D -- it was the first major 3D feature photographed in color -- you were impressed by director Andre de Toth’s expert use of the format (even more impressive when you learn that de Toth was blind in one eye and couldn’t actually see any of the 3D effects he was stag- ing). If you saw HOUSE OF WAX without 3D, you still got a classy, memorably creepy horror show. 10/8 the SECRETY SOCIETY of FILM-MASONS | Session XXVI GOODFELLAS (1990) In this brand new 4K remastered print, Martin Scorsese explores the life of organized crime with his gritty, kinetic adaptation of Nicolas Pileggi’s best-selling Wiseguy, the true- life account of mobster and FBI informant Henry Hill. Set to a true-to-period rock soundtrack, the story details the rise and fall of Hill, a half-Irish, half-Sicilian New York kid who grows up idolizing the “wise guys” in his impoverished Brooklyn neigh- borhood and his rise through the mafia ranks. 10/14 the SECRETY SOCIETY of FILM-MASONS | Session XXVII BACK TO THE FUTURE PART II Quote-Along (1989) Cinematic history is about to be made. The date that Marty and Doc head into the future on October 21, 2015. We’re still await- ing JAWS 19, power laces and hover boards but we’ll be there for one of the best parties around. 10/21 the SECRETY SOCIETY of FILM-MASONS | Session XXVIII HAUSU (1977) The surprise film at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, director Explaining HAUSU is like explaining the wind. It just exists. Possibly the Most Brilliant and Bizarre Film of the 20th Cen- tury! 10/28 CARRIE (1976) We have Stephen King and Brian DePalma to thank for ruining proms for popular kids for ever and ever! Sissy Spacek makes Carrie a truly frail creature, whose wide eyes are so much like a cat caught in the light, you’d rather keep your distance to avoid the scratch. Enduring the humiliation that is the true stuff of teenage girl nightmares. 10/10 THE MUTILATOR (1984) By sword. By pick. By axe. BYE BYE!! Easily one of the most deranged trash-slashers of 1984, THE MUTILATOR is a feel- bad, coming-of-age violence machine that lives up to its name ten times over. Feeling like it was assembled by a schizophrenic on a meth binge and oozing with chaotic gore and creamy synths, THE MUTILATOR is one of the last undiscovered treasures from the golden age slasher boom. 10/17 THE EXORCIST (1973) Anchored by a quartet of brilliant performers (Ellen Burstyn, Max Von Sydow, Linda Blair and Jason Miller), the film feels like an intimate play moreso than an epic horror film. This makes the primal fear of a single mother having a possessed daughter to be all the more intensified and personal. The setup is simple, but the execution is flawless. Few films seek out to achieve the emotional goals of THE EXOCIST and even fewer accomplish them. 10/31 Free IFC: THIS IS THE END (2013) We’re screening one of our favorite nutso films in celebra- tion of IFC’s new show, GIGI DOES IT, which premieres on Thursday, October 1st at 10/9c only on IFC. Get a sneak peak of the show with exclusive clips at this screening! Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel star as themselves along with Danny McBride, Jonah Hill, and Craig Robinson in this end-of-days comedy that finds the actors hiding out with James Franco in his house as the apocalypse decimates L.A. 10/26 THE ULTIMATE WILLY WONKA PARTY (1971) Come watch WILLY WONKA the only way we know how... with Mike TeeVee (Paris Themmen) and Veruca Salt (Julie Dawn Cole) Live In Person! The Action Pack is pulling out all the stops with little surprises around every corner...but nothing too dangerous. Bubbles for everyone, candies to eat along with the kids on screen and more. We’d hate to ruin it all for you, so sign the contract at the bottom line and you’ll be in a world of pure imagination...if you truly wish...to be. 10/2 ARCADE FIRE: THE REFLEKTOR TAPES (2015) THE REFLEKTOR TAPES is a fascinating insight into the making of Arcade Fire’s international #1 album Reflektor. The film recontextualizes the album experience and the band’s creative journey, transporting the viewer into a kaleidoscopic sonic and visual landscape. Including, filmed only for cinema audiences, never before seen personal interviews and moments captured by the band. 10/5 EVIL DEAD DOUBLE FEATURE (1984) Watch Sam Raimi’s horror classic THE EVIL DEAD and his sequel/remake horror-comedy EVIL DEAD II back-to-back! Big-time filmmaker Sam Raimi and big-chin actor Bruce Camp- bell knocked out their baby teeth on these movies, heading deep into the woods to scare up massively effective shocks on a miniscule budget. And when the first EVIL DEAD hit theaters, horror cinema was altered forever. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Sam Raimi must be the happiest man on earth. Not content with creating one of the most ferocious and ground-breaking lo-fi horror movies ever, Raimi one-upped himself by reimagining the original EVIL DEAD as a parody. And also a sequel. With all of its glorious one-liners and Three- Stooges like mishaps we’re giving it the Quote-Along Action Packed treament. 10/18 ARMY OF DARKNESS (1992) Featuring a limited Mondo giveaway! All primitive screwheads, listen up! Cult superstar Bruce Campbell reunites with director Sam Raimi to battle the deadly forces of evil. The outrageous, effects-fueled action epic that will make you scream with fear and laughter. Forced to lead a makeshift Dark Ages army against the demonic Deadites, who possess all the deadly magic of hell, the shotgun-toting, chainsaw-armed, reluctant 20th century time traveler Ash must save the living from the dead, rescue his medieval girlfriend and get back to his own time. 10/29 Tough Guy Cinema PREDATOR (1987) When a dreadlocked, massive beast of an alien armed with top notch hunting equipment makes camp in the jungle and starts picking off humans, who could possibly stop it? The best band of muscles ever to stomp through 80s sci-fi, that’s who. Arnold Schwarzenneger leads the charge with every weapon imaginable and an arsenal of one-liners. 10/13 & 10/15 Video Vortex SOUL OF THE DEMON (1991) Halloween night just isn’t Halloween night unless someone gets sawed in half by a demon wearing a Freddy Krueger mask from Target. Shot for the price of three tacos, SOUL OF THE DEMON is the world’s first-est, best-est, and only-est shot- in-Las-Vegas NIGHT OF THE DEMONS rip-off. When two kids find a gargoyle statue by a lake, they unknowingly unleash a demon with an insatiable bloodlust for humans. After some BMX tricks and a basketball scrimmage between bros with hairstyles that look like piles of dead skunks, some rejects from BILL AND TED’S BOGUS JOURNEY throw a pizza party in an abandoned house on Halloween. The demon shows up! And the mega-gory mutilation begins!! SOUL OF THE DEMON is an unheralded no-fi dimension-warp with incredible homemade effects, unbelievable guitar wailing, and characters who say things like, “This is a mixture of MAGNUM P.I., DRACULA, and your fu****’ mom!” That is to say, this movie is everything you’ve ever wanted on Halloween. 10/27 GHOSTBUSTERS Movie Party (1984) It’s possible that GHOSTBUSTERS is the world’s only univer- sally adored movie. Spectre-destroyers Murray, Aykroyd, Ramis and the vastly under-appreciated Hudson collectively defined everything we enjoy in ‘80s cinema, unleashing a supernatural adventure that busts funnybones as well as ghosts. Together, the four hopped in a converted ambulance and made an entire decade safe for hilarity, action, and transdimensional demon combat. 10/19 THE LOST BOYS Quote-Along (1987) We won’t make you eat maggots or trick you into drinking blood that will somehow turn you into half of a vampire, but we will let you say all of your favorite lines out loud along with the film, and our hosts will be starting the show off with a special game of “Are You a Vampire?” on stage. Expect plenty of garlic and holy water if you’re brave enough to volunteer for that challenge! 10/12 ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW Sing-Along (1975) “You’ve arrived on a very special night.” We’re teaming up for a fundraiser night hosted by the toughest ladies on four wheels. Join The Alamo and the NOVA Roller Derby Girls for a Halloween experience you won’t forget. The Quote-Alongs that started our love of all other Quote-Alongs is returning to The Alamo. 10/30 ATTACK ON TITAN (2015) A century ago, Titans suddenly appeared on Earth. These titans soon drove human civilization to the brink of collapse. Humans then built a giant wall to defend themselves. Within these confines humans lived in peace, but 100 years later the wall was broken. The result is intense action in a deadly post- apocalyptic setting where humans fight monstrous Titans for their very survival. Where will they end up? Will the humans be able to reclaim their world, to secure their survival? The fate of mankind will rest with a ragtag team of Army Corps members. Only time will tell if they can end the Titan menace. PART 1: 9/30 & 10/1 PART 2: 10/21 & 10/22 THE LAWS OF THE UNIVERSE Anna, Tyler, Halle, and Eisuke are five high school students who are suddenly wrapped up in a mysterious incident. An alien species called Grey abducts Halle’s sister and embeds her with a special chip inside her brain. The five stand up to save Halle’s sister and try to reveal the existence of aliens, but continue to be met with mysterious events. 10/19 BORUTO: NARUTO THE MOVIE With Naruto as the Seventh Hokage, Hidden Leaf Village is planning to host the Chunin Exams to train new shinobi from the village and from their allied villages. Among the entrants are Sasuke’s daughter, Sarada, Mitsuki, an exceptionally talented yet mysterious shinobi… And Boruto, Naruto’s talented but impetuous son. 10/12 THE ALAMO GETS SPOOKED THRILLS, CHILLS, BLOOD AND GUTS T THE ALAMO GETS SPOOKED THRILLS, CHILLS, BLOOD AND GUTS THE ALAMO GETS SPOOKED THRILLS, CHILLS, BLOOD AND GUTS THE ALAMO GETS SPOOKED THRILLS, CHILLS, BLOOD AND GUTS the SECRET SOCIETY A FILM CLUB FOR THE FILM FAN ONLY AT THE ALAMO ONLY AT THE ALAMO ONLY AT THE ALAMO
