Our pennant season has begun and the first rounds of pennant have been played and very suc-cessfully I might add. Sadly, Joyce Sawyers passed away recently and my condo-lences go out to her family and friends. Joyce was a long stand-ing member and did a lot of work at the club. Many members at-tended her funeral on 9 Oct. The Monday morning work group have been ensuring our grounds and facilities are looking good and they recently upgraded the ladies

and mens rooms by installing new toilets and painting the area which is now looking more modern and fresh. Congratulations to Bob Pratt and Jack Allison for reaching the finals in the Regional Pairs. We also had our first smorgasbord this season on 1st October which was again a very successful day. Norma mentioned it was the best smorgasbord she’s been to in a long time. Thank you to all the ex-isting and new helpers who made the day a great success.

Preparations are well underway for our Cup Eve Function and this year our Sponsor, Joseph O’Loughlin will be calling the race. Alan Lyons has called the race for many years but this year he would like to be a spec-tator. Get into the spirit of the night and come dressed for the Cup in your allocated colour. A lot of work goes into organising this night so put your name on the list or organise a table so you can enjoy this great night at your Club.

an optometrist appointment is needed. Whitehorse Leader and Brian Amos at Eastern FM Radio have also been asked to advertise our event. Our Try Bowls days have com-menced and I would also like to thank those members who come and support the Club on the day by helping potential new bowlers on the green, manning the barbeque, turning up with family or friends and assisting in whatever way possible on the day. Let us hope that all this hard work

A big thank you to the people who delivered flyers to local residents about our free Try Bowls days on every Sunday and Thursday in October. Many of you walked a lot of streets to ensure we got the word out there and it couldn’t have happened without your much appreciated help. Thank you also to members who delivered flyers to local shopping centres and businesses in the area. I guess you have all noticed by now the two large signs outside our entrance to the Club advertis-ing Try Bowls days. If not, maybe

brings some more new members to our Club because as everyone is aware getting people to join your Club is crucial to its ongoing suc-cess. We have already had 2 members sign up to join the club. Bruce Tulloch last played bowls about 3 years ago and is keen to resume. Jack Notton is also an experienced bowler who is keen to join Heather-dale. Please make both players welcome

On behalf of the club I wish to extend my condolences to the Sawyers family with the passing of Joyce. She will be sadly missed. It does serve as a timely reminder for you to have your emergency contact details at the club. These are in sealed enve-lopes which will only be opened in case of emergency. So if you don't have your details at the club or if they are out of date its time to make sure we get them.

Although Vicki has thanked all involved in the try bowls sessions, I wish to reiterate my thanks to all and in particular to Vicki for organ-ising the sessions.

As a Board member representing the coaches of our Club I have prepared a few notes which could help us as a club return to our previous position. Over re-cent years we have dropped from a team knocking on the door of Division 1 (Saturday Pen-nant) and having two teams in Division 2 to having 1 team in Division 3 and having others relegated. We need to have a good look at ourselves and see how we can improve our situation.

This month Lachlan Tighe spoke to our Board and left us with some good information on how to start. A point that was left with us is that if we Fail to Plan for a game we Plan to Fail. Therefore each Skipper should prepare a plan on how to beat the opposition and communicate that plan to his team .Each team will probably have a different plan depending on the personnel in the team.

Some suggestions might be:

1. Start with long ends. That leaves the opposition with the only option of changing the length is to go shorter. Re-member it is much easier to take weight off than put it on.

2. Divide the team in half. The first two should try to have two bowls behind the Jack. Always try to get second shot. Remember that it is a team game and there are 3 others in your team. You do not have to win it on your own. If your team only goes down by 1 shot each end you lose you will probably win the game and you have done your Job. The second half should be prepared to either, Consolidate, Convert or Pro-tect.

3. When away from home Leads should follow the lead of the opposition lead as they know their greens better than anyone else. Play their side and force them onto the hard side. Remember you only have to get second shot.

Leads should never change their hand unless directed to by the Skipper.

4. Divide the game into sections, 4x5 plus one. Assess the situation after each section.

There are many other conditions that a Skipper may want to Implement and remember these have only been put forward as suggestions

Skippers should relay their message to their team and each team member should try to carry out the Skippers wishes

Finally remember we have a number of accredited coaches in our club who are prepared to help you. Please ap-proach one of them if you have a prob-lem and would like assistance.

Coaches can help you in many ways and can usually pick up your faults fairly quickly. None of us are perfect and we all need all the help we can get.

The new bowls season has begun and hopefully lots of sunshine to help all the sickies to feel better During the break Ivy Davis and Gail Loidl had knee operations. Both are recovering well and are back at the club Terri Mallet shocked us all and herself by having a double bi pass opera-tion. She is on the road to recovery but still has to take it easy Bill Fletcher has been in and out of Knox hospital. He is ok. At the mo-ment. Jan Lanham is still having problems with her feet, plus back pain She is in respite at the moment..We hope she is out and about soon. Graham Lydiard tore a hamstring playing tennis and is in a lot of pain. He is hoping to go to Donvale for rehabilitation. Ian Crowe has also had time in Hospital and is back playing bowls..We hope he stays well. We were very sorry to know Joyce Sawyers passed away. She was along time member and hard worker for our club and will be sadly missed. We hope everyone stays well.

Some “good” news – some “not so good” news. Let us start with the good news – It begins with the new seasons Opening Day held at the Club on the 26th August last. Attendee numbers were down but this did-n't detract from the “good time had by all”, for those who at-tended. For the “ill informed” the season commences with the first bowl of the season traditionally “rolled” by the Club President, in this instance, Vicki Pickering. All bowlers then spread themselves around the edges of the (east) green and bowl to a large red-backed spider placed in the cen-tre of the green. Fortunately it is not the real thing but a non-the-less scary, huge, realistic, plastic version of the real thing. After dodging around bowls virtually coming from all four corners of the green, Phyl Dickens was able to negotiate her bowl through the mass of bowls trav-ersing in all directions and at all speeds to reach the ultimate goal – being the closest to the target. No prizes mind you, just the du-bious honour of being the first bowler of the season to get her bowl closest to the jack – er spi-der. Well done Phyl! A triples competition followed in which our erstwhile treasurer, Jim Corcoran skippered Marga-ret Rogers (lead) and Ben Hod-kinson (second) to a resounding win. To add to the festivities all scorecards were then fanned and those who gained glory by having their names drawn were – Gail Crane (lead), Mel Gordon (second) and Frank Parker (skip). The day concluded with a feast of sandwiches and cakes. Moving along... the second event

worthwhile mentioning is the monthly Smorgasbord. I say worthwhile mentioning, but really we tend to overlook the regular weekly Wednesday social bowls efficiently oganised by Alan Ly-ons, who has, for many years now, been the mainstay behind this event being so popular. If you want a pleasant “no pressure” afternoon of bowls against good opposition, some from and at other Clubs, you could do worse than to give this afternoon a try. I digressed, I was talking about the Smorgasbord - ever noticed as you grow older, how easy it is to be distracted from the job in hand and you head off in an alto-gether different tangent….er…., here I go again! Smorgasbord, remember Smorgasbord is the topic of discussion and nothing else. Anyway, with a relatively new team of catering ladies and a new team of organisers, Phyl Dickens and myself, it was a case of trial and error – or is it called “flying by the seat of our pants”. Whatever, past organiser, Marga-ret Sawyer stepped up to guide Phyl and I along the way and with the able help of Merle Rheumer and my own wife, Maralyn to col-lect the fees and organize all the financial affairs, the day, as far as we were concerned, went very well. Sixteen teams, comprising mainly of home grown, topped off with a number of visitors from nearby Clubs, although some came from as far afield as Eltham & Hurst-bridge, made up the competing field. The weather, although over-cast was kind and if feedback fol-lowing the event is any measure to go by, it was a most successful day. Lets face it...where else could you enjoy a leisurely after-

noon of bowls, good company, and a wholesome meal, all for the princely sum of $20 each. The standard of bowls was quite high, as I am sure the eventual winning team of Bernard Bouchereau (skip), Norma Brian (third) Gary Pickering (second) and wife Vicki (lead), will agree. They held out the fast finishing team of visitors by one mere point, in P Wilkinson and E Stow, who were ably assisted with two of our own in Keith Moore and Jim Williams. A con-solation prize for the best single game went to another composite team in S. Christiansen (lead), Peter Robinson (second), L. Edwards (third) and Ar-thur Gibson (skip). Well done to you all! The meal to say the least, prepared and served by those capable catering volunteers in the kitchen, was most worthy of a successful day and when our own sponsor in Worldwide Travel & Cruise unexpectedly added two prizes of a carry bag, each choked full of an assortment of goodies, to our own cash prizes, I am sure most went home fully satisfied with a day well spent. Now, in conclusion, the “not so good” news I mentioned in the first para-graph was the need for organisers to cancel the Ladies 2-4-2 and Mens 2-4-2 events, scheduled for Wednesday 5th October, due to lack of interest. It’s disappointing to say the least. A lot of work goes in to preparing these events for the benefit of all and when it comes down to cancellation because not enough were interested, then it is a sad occasion. Bad weather, yes, we bowlers expect that, but lack of inter-est, well that is something new in this Club and something that is very hard to digest. Que Sera, Sera (Whatever will be, will be) Happy bowling, Mac Wells

The timetable between seasons may seem a long time , but it is a busy time for the organisers for the following season . Bowls Vic. requires input from the clubs and they have a requirement date for our submissions from clubs to enter sides some months before the season is due to start . Selec-tors therefore contact each mem-ber , often more than once , to find out the member's interest in next season . Our approach is to enter enough sides to allow every member, who has nominated , the opportunity to play pennant . That approach is against the ad-vice of Bowls Vic. , who suggest allowing a surplus of players above the number required . Mid-week pennant are just getting enough players to field the 3 sides . Saturday pennant are also getting just enough to field 4 sides . The unavailable members all have good reasons for missing some games and the selectors will try their best to avoid walk-overs ( for which there is a fine ) .

We know how each and every one of you love to play pen-nant but we also have a duty of care to our members - so it is es-sential that we are made aware of anything which may affect your participation - that meaning is "we don't want you to play under du-ress". Sometimes we may have a small surplus of players and there maybe an opportunity to rotate players . Surplus players are in-

vited to attend our " bankers group " on each of the pennant days.

We recognise that it can help teams to bond if they play in the same team on both Tuesday and Saturday and we will work along those lines if possible .

In order to get through a long sea-son, during which there may be difficulties and it is important for us to communicate regularly with each other .

This season we have been trial-ling a different method of assess-ment or rating as an aid for selec-tors - remember that the selectors are players also and can not watch the games - so it is impor-tant that the ratings reflect per-formances . We don't really get much out of the blue or yellow sheets and we are unlikely to con-tinue with them . We are making enquiries as to what other clubs are using , but until we find some-thing better , we will revert back to our previous system .

The main problem with the current system is the need for players to try remembering the past 2 hours of bowls from 4 team members and that could mean , say 88 bowls over about 11 ends , and then again for another 80 bowls for another 10 ends . Can we con-centrate for that amount of time when we should be concentrating on winning the game ?

OBSERVATIONS FROM

THE SIDELINES

I have watched most games from the sidelines so far this season . There has been a big improvement in the ability of particularly the newer bowl-ers , but there is always room for im-provement and if you watch some of our veterans or super veterans deliv-ery style you may notice that they put a lot of thought into their pre - deliv-ery. I notice that a lot of bowlers just get on the mat and bowl without proper preparation . There is a ne-glect in getting your feet in the right position and from then on the rest of the delivery has to compensate for that. Remember to get back to the basics and be stable and settled be-fore delivering and then eliminate the movements which are not needed or have to be compensated for. Bowlers who change to a bowler's arm are so much better because of less move-ment during the delivery stage .

I notice that there are far too many short bowls - several metres in some cases - and these can only come into the count by accident - any bowl more than a metre short is unlikely to be effective .

REMEMBER THAT THE BOWL YOU ARE ABOUT TO DELIVER HAS

TO BE THE MATCH WINNER.

Keith Piper (on behalf of the selectors)

Once Again, there has been a lot of discussion, comments and opinions regarding the protocol of what should happen with flying the Australian Flag following the death of a Club member.

Information on the protocols for display-ing and folding the flag can be found in Part 2 of the booklet Australian flags which is published by the Depart-ment of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, a copy of which will be kept in the Club office. This document states the follow-ing:-

The Australian flag should never be flown at night unless illuminated.

Flying the Australian flag at half-mast

Flags are flown at half-mast as a sign of mourning.

To bring the flag to the half-mast posi-tion, the flag must first be raised to the top of the mast (the ‘peak’), then imme-diately lowered slowly to the half-mast position. The half-mast position will de-pend on the size of the flag and the

length of the flagpole. The flag must be lowered to a position recognisably half-mast to avoid the appearance of a flag which has accidentally fallen away from the top of the flagpole. An acceptable position would be when the top of the flag is a third of the dis-tance down from the top of the flag-pole.

There are times when direction will be given by the Australian Govern-ment for all flags to be flown at half-mast.

Flags in any locality can be flown at half-mast when someone local dies, or on the day of their funeral.

When lowering the flag from a half-mast position it should be briefly raised to the peak and then lowered ceremoniously.

The flag should never be flown at half-mast at night even if it is illu-minated.

When flying the Australian Na-tional Flag with other flags, all flags in the set should be flown at half-mast.

CLUB FLAG

The Club Flag should be flown at half-mast from the time of a member’s death until the member’s funeral when a Club bowls event is being played.

The protocol for raising the Club Flag to and from half-mast should be the same as the Australian Flag.

The Club Flag should not be flown at night unless illuminated.

Trading Table

I'ts good to have the club back in full swing again. With more visitors we should have more table sales. We now have door stops to sell again. They were very popular when we last had them, so do have a look. They are really nice and make a lovely Christ-mas present. Barbara Holmes has kindly supplied us with her new range of beautiful hand made greeting cards. They sell very quickly, so don't leave it too late. Christmas things soon to come. Good bowling everyone From Linda, At The Table
