ELHAM VILLAGE HALL NEWS
Notes from the Chairman
The EVHA has a number of important events coming
to you this Autumn. October brings the ever-popular
Conker Bash and Autumn Quiz. At the end of the
month will be Derek’s talk to raise funds for the
Christmas trees and their illumination. Please turn out
in droves as we have to fund replacement lights and
star for the big tree that is erected on The Triangle.
In November (11th) the Village Hall is proud to host
the final event of a week of celebrations of the
Centenary of the ending of the Great War. It will be a
late afternoon event of drama, songs, and live music.
A committee representing numerous village clubs,
societies and institutions have worked tirelessly to
bring this one-off event to us all.
December brings another visit from the great Railway
Swing Band and the traditional Christmas
Illuminations ceremony. In addition we hope to
arrange another Desert Island Discs evening.
Thursday November 27 is the AGM of the Elham
Village Hall Association. We still have a couple of
vacancies on this management committee and
importantly for a Chairman as I shall be stepping
down then. If anyone is interested in filling these
vacancies or would like discussions about them please
contact me (840947 or [email protected]).

UPDATE ON THE DEFRIBRILLATOR AT
ELHAM VILLAGE HALL.
You may be aware of several fundraising indicatives that
have been undertaken by myself and Angie Scott to raise
funds for a defibrillator to be located outside of Elham
Village Hall.
Following our latest event- a very successful Gin Tasting
evening we are delighted to report that our total is now
£1026.00. This includes a pledge of £300 from the sports
club for which we are very grateful. The estimate for the
defibrillator is around £1,400 so we are now within £400
of what is needed to purchase, install and hold a training
day for all interested parties.
If you would like to donate to our fund to make this
instillation happen soonest please contact me on
840820 /[email protected]
We would like to thank those villagers who have
supported our events to date and look forward to
organising further events for worthwhile causes.

Spooky Halloween Parade –
Wednesday 31stOctober. Gathering in The Square, Elham from 5pm,
leaving at 5.30pm. The Spooky Halloween Parade is organised annually by Play for Elham. The layout of the
village, its lovely old buildings, the decorated homes of residents who live along the route
of the parade and the community spirit of all involved, makes Elham an ideal location to
hold this magical event. By holding an organised event children are discouraged from doing
their own ‘Trick or Treating’ around the village which can, in particular for some elderly residents, be an
unsettling experience and of course may not be safe for the children.
People participate in this event at their own risk and all children must be accompanied by a responsible adult at
all times.
Once again we kindly ask residents along the route to join the fun and decorate the front of your home -
everyone was blown away by the efforts that you all made last year and we thank you in advance for all that
you do to support the night.
Parents wishing to bring children, residents and all are invited to donate sweets if they are able. Details of
where to drop off the sweets prior to the parade will appear on posters around the village.
Prizes for the Best Decorated House and Best Costume. Don’t forget your torches!
Play for Elham will be disbanding at the end of 2019, so this will be the last parade that we will be running. If
anyone is interested in continuing the tradition we would love to hear from you. Thank you as always for the
support and donations from the community which help keep our lovely park open and ship-shape. Emma,
Briony and Cristina – Play for Elham. [email protected]

Tickets go on sale for Glorious from Saturday October 20th from Laing Bennett in Lyminge and from our website.
The play tells the story of Florence Foster Jenkins, whose father was determined that the world would not hear
her sing. However, when he died, leaving her a wealthy woman she propelled herself into the role of an operatic
diva - with a little help from her friends St Clair, Dorothy and, of course, Ricky the dog. Florence recruits Cosme,
an impoverished pianist and the rest is history. Come and join us in celebrating the life of ‘the worst opera singer
in the world’. The play is by Peter Quilter and is directed by Mike Chisnall and Jan Watts and produced by Tricia
Stewart. It will be a spectacle for your eyes and leave you with a song in your heart. However, your ears may take
a while to recover!
Make sure you put 14- 17 November in your diary. It is curtains up at 7.30 pm on the Wednesday, Thursday and
Friday. However, please note it is 3pm on the Saturday as we are not having an evening performance. Tickets are
£8 each.
Unfortunately the planned talk on Wild About Flowers didn't take place as the speaker was unable
to come However we were not disappointed with a different speaker that Rosemary managed to
locate at very short notice - thank you Rosemary. We had a splendid talk by Christine Bartlett on
Orchid Mania.
We heard how orchids came to England in the 19th century and that they could cost as much as £20,000!
Amazing when you think that today they can be bought for less than £20. They started cloning orchids in 1960
and now one bud can produce four million plants hence the drop in price. Christine then went on to explain the
different sorts of orchids and how to care for them.
She finished off with a demonstration of how to repot our orchids - so now we’re all experts!
Lorri
As our speaker was unable to come to our August meeting Diana organised a Quiz. This was challenging but great
fun. The competition was won by Connie Burren, with Molly Walker 2nd, Pat Kent 3rd and Gladys Harris 4th.
On October 24th we look forward to Sylvia Scott telling us about "My Life as a Nurse".
We meet at Rhodes Minnis Village Hall at 2.30 pm, and visitors will be warmly welcomed. (First visit free!)
For further details please contact 862913.
RHODES MINNIS CIRCLE
At the August meeting a large crowd gathered to hear Sue Marshall talk about
the glories of the Iris family. She described the range of Iris varieties, their
cultivation and, of course, their beauty, particularly their wonderfully subtle colours. She showed lots of pictures,
ranging from the tall, stately varieties which can be a metre in height to the dwarf bearded which rarely grow to
more than 8-10 inches. A fascinating and beautiful family and an interesting talk.
On 6th October, we have our Autumn Coffee Morning. There will be a good selection of bulbs for sale - always a
big attraction - a cake and produce stall, plants and, of course, a raffle. DO come along and enjoy this sociable
morning - the Village Hall at 10am.
On 10th November, we have our Annual Dinner. Tickets will be on sale at the coffee morning. Its always a jolly
enjoyable and very well attended event, so don’t miss it!
The speaker at the October meeting will be Russell Bowes on the “Inexhaustable Mr. Paxton”. PLEASE note that
this meeting will start at 7pm. We shall have a short interval half way through the talk. He is always a very popular
speaker so don’t miss it! Frances Horton

Village Christmas Illuminations
It seems incredible that we are mentioning Christmas
as early as this!
However, as you may know, we are indebted to Derek
Boughton who produces an illustrated talk each year to
raise funds to finance the Village Christmas
Illuminations.
This year it is entitled “20th Century Elham” and will
cover the history of the Village from the last days of
Victoria to the Millennium. Derek’s talks are always
popular, so mark the date in your diary for an
entertaining evening!
The talk will take place in the Village Hall on Friday 26
October at 7.30pm.

NOTES ON THE MINUTES OF
THE MEETING OF THE PARISH
COUNCIL HELD ON MONDAY
6TH AUGUST. STARTING AT
6.45PM
A discussion to consider a Report on The Gore was
held in camera but the vote was taken in public
The Locum Clerk handed out copies of the report regarding
The Gore. The report brought together the issues regarding
the various options of taking on a Lease.
A detailed discussion took place, which included whether or
not the parish Council should consider taking on the lease.
What would be the most cost effective way of managing it.
Options for the old pavilion on the site and how this could be
resolved, given that there may be an effect on future precept
requests.
The public meeting commenced at 7.30pm
To form/agree a resolution to consider moving from
Heads of Terms to a creation of a final contract with
the Trustees and agree any actions.
A further short debate took place and the following motion
was decided
‘To engage in further discussions with the Trustees of The Gore to
consider a final contract.’
After being proposed and seconded the motions was
unanimously agreed.
It was further agreed that should any lease not be in the
financial interest of the village the full council would re-
consider situation..
Minutes of the July meeting were agreed with no matters
arising.
Public Contribution
A member of the public asked if the discussion that took place
in camera was to do with the Gore. The Chairman replied
that it was but there were lots of issues to discuss and agree.
Finance To agree invoices and sign cheques
The Acting RFO reported that there were no invoices
received, although the carriers who would be delivering the
now repaired Speed watch equipment needed £66.00 +VAT
before they would deliver it. This was agreed, and a cheque
will be raised after the meeting.
To consider the purchase and placing of planters in the village
and agree any actions required.
A member of the Residents Association (RA) raised the
suggestion that having some planters around the village would
enhance the village. He had approached some-one in the
village who would be happy to build them for the costs of the
materials only. After a short debate it was agreed in
principle, but it would also require planting and ongoing
management of the planters. The Locum Clerk suggested that
the RA or if there was a Gardeners group volunteers could be
requested. The size of them was agreed as 3’ X 2’ and 22”
high.
To consider the refurbishment of the parish notice board and
agree any actions As no further information was available this
item will be deferred to the September meeting. Update on
the repair of the Well. As agreed at the last meeting, a
message was placed on the village social media page asking for
people with building experience to quote for the job. A reply
had been sent expressing interest but no quote sent. It was
noted that the person was on holiday; this item was referred
to the next meeting. District Cllr Peall had nothing to report
owing to the fact that he had been off for the last few weeks
Community Warden The Community Warden had given his
apologies. The Chairman read out a short report stating that
there had been very little for him to consider.
Chairman’s & Councillors Reports It was reported that
the Double Yellow Lines from The Square to Pound Lane had
been done. It was hoped these will be enforced. There were
concerns over some dog walkers who continue not to pick up
after their dog. The Dog warden should be contacted, if the
time and place are on a regular walk the dog warden will
come out and issue a fine. It was noted that a Tree by the
surgery and the seat nearby are in need of work. The tree has
some dead branches which need to be removed and the seat
is broken and needs to be taken away.
To discuss various road issues and agree actions
The Chairman reported receiving an email from a resident;
the capstone which had been knocked off the churchyard wall
has now been repaired at the residents expense. The Parish
Council were happy to record a vote of thanks to him for
arranging this.
To exclude the public and press under section 12 of
Public Bodies (Admission to Meetings) Act 1960 due
to the sensitivity of the items to be discussed
This was agreed
Date of next meeting and close
There being no further business the meeting closed at
9.40pm

The pothole repair programme
continues and the latest figures show
50,956 potholes filled across Kent and
201,790 sqm of resurfacing. Within that
figure the Folkestone & Hythe district has seen 4,781
potholes filled and 25,083 sqm of resurfacing with more
to come. Please keep reporting highway problems at
www.kent.gov.uk or 03000 41 81 81. The reporting
system is not just for potholes; blocked drains, faded
road markings, overhanging vegetation, damaged highway
signs and much more can also be reported this way.
KCC’s consultation on whether to introduce charges for
soil, rubble, hardcore and plasterboard at our 16
Household Waste Recycling Centres continues until 1st
November. The early responses have mostly come
from people who don’t use the Centres for this
themselves but fear changes might lead to an increase in
flytipping. Experience elsewhere in the country is that
charging for this type of waste does not lead to an
increase in flytipping as most householders are law
abiding and accept that a payment of £4 for a bag of
rubble is a reasonable charge compared to the cost of an
entire skip. Most flytipping is done by criminal gangs not
individuals and Kent Police have had some major
successes in catching those responsible. We can all help
with this by reporting flytipping we see to the Police and
the District Council or by using the country eye app
which I am told is by far the simplest method. (An
Elmsted resident has recently been able to provide
evidence that will lead to a flytipping prosecution.)
In October KCC will launch its annual consultation on
budget choices for the next financial year. Once again
our Government grant is decreasing despite demand for
social care and inflation rising. We’ve been making major
savings since 2010 which is why we are not on the list
you may have seen other local authorities facing financial
crisis. However, there’s no doubt that every council
with social care responsibilities will eventually go under
as the present system of funding how we care for the
elderly, disabled and vulnerable is unsustainable and a
long term cross party agreement on a better system is
needed. Damien Collins our MP and Elham resident tells
me that he has been continuing work with the mobile
phone operators about improving coverage in the area
and he will share news as soon as he can. Susan Carey

POPPY APPEAL
If you haven’t been able to help with the knitting but would still like to contribute to the Poppies for the church
Tower in some way, we are looking for donations towards the cost of the strings and tags and guns that we are
using to attach them. Donations can be handed to Janice or Val or put in an envelope marked “POPPIES” in the
chest in church.

Dear Friends,
The evenings are drawing in as summer comes to an end; but endings always bring about new beginnings. And, we
have had so many beautiful new beginnings within our community. “Love had definitely been in the air!”
We have had so many weddings and baptisms this year it has been quite unbelievable! It is wonderful that so many
people still value what Christianity has to offer. We also have five people who are going to be confirmed on
Monday the 8th October at 7:30pm in Elham church so do come along and support them.
Those wedding couples came to church to honour their relationship before God and seek God’s blessing upon it
and to start in the understanding of God’s engagement in it.
Because in it God is; whether they like it or not. For where there is Love, there is God; for God is Love and those
who Love; live in God and God lives in them. God is Love and Love is certainly what these couples had for each
other! A Love made so very visible.
After visiting the Holy Land, the story of the Wedding at Cana of Galilee now feels and tastes different. The village
of Cana high upon a hill where people Arab Muslims and Christians chose to live in the coolness and breeze of the
mountains it is dry, cool and windy. Not hot or arid as I had thought. Cana wine is sold there which is mostly dark
and sweet; like sherry not cool and thirst quenching as I had imagined. But most weddings in that era usually
happened after Harvest in the autumn so the heat would not be intense, and a warm sweet wine would be perfect.
And perfect it was better than any wine served before it. But what a calamity it would be to run out of wine;
Mary here directs the scene:
‘They have no wine!’ Imploring Jesus to act. Jesus seems quite irritated by this Mother; just like we all can be at
times. ‘Woman, what concern is that to me and you?’
But she pushes him to act! ‘Do whatever he tells you!’
The running out of wine thus gives a pause for God to Act.
How did God then Act?
Jesus made no fuss, gave no magic statement or great long prayer. He chose the servants to do this work; to do
this sign. Jesus himself directs them gently: ‘Fill the jars with water and draw some out.’
The servants do the work and it is through their work not Jesus’s that God acts. It is through their work that ‘Love
is made visible’ and water is turned into wine. The embarrassment and possible suing of the caterers is averted, and
the celebrations can continue on.
It will be the same for us! Whatever we do in our lives, our churches, in our relationships and marriages we need
to take ‘pauses’ to enable God to act and to make our work ‘Love made Visible.’
