Dear Friends,
Let me begin by telling you about the day I met Queen Elizabeth – the First, that is. Yes, Queen Elizabeth I (1558-1603), daughter of Henry VIII. Back in the days of the Spanish Armada, Drake, Raleigh and Shakespeare. What, you don’t believe me? You say, I’m not old enough, and I don’t own a Tardis. All right, let me try again. I want you to think about the Ten Commandments, given to Moses back in the day. I can tell you perfectly how to keep them, not merely because I’m a Rev., nor because I’ve read about them, but because I was there. I actually gave these laws to Moses in the first place. I told him what to do, so I can tell you truly and accurately what you are to do as well. Am I not convincing you? Let me try another line. I want you to imagine we are being introduced for the first time. My friend John is making the introductions. I want you to know that John is the most important person in history. There has never been anyone like him before. Why? Simply because he introduced ME. He gave you the opportunity to meet me and that is the most significant job ever undertaken by anyone in the history of the world. What’s that? I’m either deluded or my ego is off the scale? One more time please, listen to this. I promise you that after my death, you will meet me again, not as a ghost nor as a zombie but as a living person. You can speak to me, touch me - we’ll even have a meal together. I’ll tell you exactly where and when. Now you’re seriously concerned about my grip on reality. What is going on? These are quite incredible claims that I’ve made in this article. They sound ridiculous and impossible. Of course I do not make any of these claims in earnest. But these are claims that Jesus Christ made for himself. You can look them up in a Bible, or on biblegateway.com:
“Before Abraham was, I am.” (John 8.58 – Abraham lived centuries beforehand.) “The Son of Man (Jesus) is Lord of the Sabbath.” (Mark 2.28 – one of the ten commandments deals with how the Sabbath day was to be kept.) “Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist.” (Matthew 11.11 – John introduced Jesus, telling people to get ready.) “But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.” (Mark 14.28)
He even told his disciple Philip, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.” (John 14.9) What do we make of these claims? We can conclude that Jesus is lying, a dangerous deceiver who misled people – that’s what many religious leaders of the day decided. We can say that Jesus was lying to himself, a deluded man who had lost all sense of reality – that’s what his family thought. Or we can take these claims seriously and investigate the teaching and activity of this man. Does his life back up his claims? Does he do the kind of things that only God can do? Does he show what God is like? Did he really die and come back to life? Millions of people throughout history and across the world have discovered the truth behind these claims, and the churches of this area bear witness to them. We exist to discover more about the man who made these claims, and you are welcome to explore with us.

Come and work with us on how, as church communities, we can reach out to those around us—and in doing so, grow in faith.
This is an opportunity to look at what we are doing well and what we can build on, so that we all feel more supported
This workshop is organised by the Kent Estuary Mission Community Development
Group as part of building our shared capacity across the local churches
How would I talk to neighbours about my faith?
How would I help someone start a faith journey? Indeed, where am I on that journey?

Have you attended any community events
at St Thomas' Church in the past?
We would like to display photos to show how the church centre has been used in different ways over the years. Please write your name, address and phone number on the back of your photos, to ensure you get all your photos returned.
There will be an open day with a display of photographs around the church
on Friday 8th November as we start fund raising to improve our community facilities at St Thomas'.
Parish Fellowship is a time for praise and prayer, teaching and fellowship in a friendly and informal setting. It is a chance to deepen our fellowship within the three parishes, and of course the doors are open to everyone.
Third Sundays at 6.30 pm in St Peter’s Church, Heversham.
Sunday 20th October with some food at 6pm a light Jacob’s Join.

If you are interested, please contact Annie Garden at [email protected]. If you are in St John’s and wish to see the detailed list of sessions and dates, and Annie’s further information on the book, this will be on the noticeboard in church; if you would like the information by email, please ask Jill [email protected]; if you would like a copy of the book at the considerable discount of £10 please let Pam [email protected] know in time for her to advise Annie before 30 September.

Gardening opportunity Would anyone be interested in helping to develop a community garden within the grounds of St John’s where you would be able to work with others? Some people are good at planning but don’t have the strength to do the work. Others have the physical capacity but not the knowledge to get started. And a group like this always needs someone to brew up! Working together, everyone would have an important part to play and the chance to make new friends. interested? Call 60441 or email: [email protected]
Do you ever marvel and the wonders of creation - the natural world around us - the wonders of space beyond us - the natural resources we take from the earth ... and sometimes take for granted - and not least the ingenuity of the human brain to make use of the resources our earth has to offer, to make our lives healthier, happier and more comfortable? Come and take some moments of peace and quiet this harvest time to reflect on these issues there will be an opportunity to engage with some resources set out in 6 spaces under the collective title "Experience God's Goodness". from Monday Sept 30th to Friday Oct 4th (except the Thursday morning) in St John's Church, Levens Pick up a leaflet from the welcome table . It will guide your progress round the displays and give you some things to think about - not least how we as individuals can take better care of the earth on which we depend for all our human needs.

My mum has a non-visible disability, which causes her walking difficulties. I heard something on the news about how she may now be eligible for a blue badge. How can I find out about this and help her apply? On 30 August, the Blue Badge scheme was extended to people who live in England and have non-visible disabilities or conditions which affect their ability to walk. As a result, your mother may now qualify for a badge. She will be automatically eligible if she gets certain types of benefits, e.g. some categories of Personal Independence Payment and the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance. If not, she can still apply for a badge. Her local authority will use evidence from doctors and other healthcare professionals. She can check her eligibility and apply for a local authority-issued Blue Badge at gov.uk/apply-blue-badge. If she can’t do this herself, you can apply on her behalf. You’ll need a recent digital passport-style photo, proof of her identity, address, details of any benefits she receives, her National Insurance number, and evidence of how her non-visible disability or condition affects her mobility. Free, confidential advice and help is available from South Lakes Citizens Advice on any aspect of debt, consumer problems, benefits, housing, employment or any other problems.
