FROM THE BRIDGE The President's Column

We are now in our 53nd membership year. You can still hear my iconic cry, from six feet away, mask inhand, just in case, “the membership fee is still only $10 per year and we accept advanced payment ifyou wish to get ahead on your membership”. There is also a family membership plan. You can catchme at a meeting, (fingers crossed), or send your payments to me by mail, checks to be made payableto Bay Colony Historical Modelers. In a new move, you can now see any of the Board members torenew your membership.

Doom and gloom corner. With Delta running rampant through many parts of the country, things maybe taking a turn for the better here. With mask mandates on the increase in many communities, itwould appear that here in Massachusetts, the numbers may be starting to turn down. (It’s the firstweek of Oct. as I write this.) Although I have seen headlines talking about the increase of cases in themore heavily vaccinated areas of New England. Of course, as we enter into deeper fall and start tomove back inside we could see an uptick.

So, how does that impact us? Going forward, bring your masks to meetings! To be able to holdmeetings during the colder months, when it is less feasible to hold meetings outside, the followingrules and guidelines shall be in place:

• All State and Local Health Requirements and CDC guidelines shall be complied with. ◦ Meeting size, etc.

• The following are recommended by the Board and may be required by the host:

• Face masks are required when inside, and must be worn properly.• Food should be individually packaged. Communal bowls such as crock pots

should be avoided.

• The following are required by the Board:

• If you are feeling ill, please do not attend.• If you knowingly come in contact with someone that has covid within 7 days

prior to the meeting, please do not attend.• If you test positive for covid within 12 days prior to the meeting, please do not

attend.• If you test positive for covid within 6 days following the meeting, please notify

us, so that we can notify others that were at the meeting.◦ Should someone report testing positive after a meeting, an email will be

sent to all in attendance, that someone has tested positive. No names willbe reported.

Page 3

We would like to continue meeting through the winter. Ignoring these rules will forces us to cancelmeetings until we can meet outside again.

Meeting hosts are requesting that members RSVP prior to the meeting. This is, in part, being done forfood planning. Please respond early enough, and not last minute, so that planning can be done. If youare planning on hosting, you can contact Bob or myself for ideas on food choices.

Chris Libucha used the forum to notify us of the passing of ex-member Mike Mercure. It had been anumber of years since Mike had made a meeting. A sympathy card was sent to his family on behalf ofthe club. Mike’s name will be added to our missing man plaque.

At the June meeting we voted to support the IPMS Nationals by sponsoring a trophy pack. I tried touse the National’s website but it didn’t function properly. I tried to contact them via email, but I had noresponse. By the time they responded, the event had passed. All of the trophy packs had beensponsored.

The Board met on Aug. 21st to determine the fate of BayCon for this year. It was decided to cancel theshow. This was done because of the Delta variant being on the upswing, not knowing how or whatrules might be in place for the show date, and if we would have sufficient time to pull the showtogether.

Old Glory miniatures sent me a notice that due to postal problems in Australia, the USPS is notaccepting mail to Down Under. No time frame was given. I hope this doesn’t affect any of us. On top ofthis, and unprecedented delays, the USPS has announced that some mail handling facilities will notbe accepting mail until the backlog is resolved. The mail will be shipped via truck to other facilities. Soyour package from Illinois may be routed through Salt Lake City, Denver, Atlanta, and Baltimore. Justa word of warning, plan on longer delivery times.

Also on the down side, Fine Scale has announced in their November/December issue that they aremoving, as of this issue, to a 6 issue per year schedule, instead of the current 10 issues per year. Notethat the Nov./Dec. issue was less than 60 pages. They promised that they would produce the sameamount of content per year but it would be on line and for subscribers only. That would equate to 4issues of content. They said that subscriptions would not be extended on an issue per issue basis. Iinterpret that to mean that if your subscription was scheduled to end in June 2022, it will now end withthe May/June issue.

Airfix has announced that their 1/72 Vickers Wellington Mk. II is now available. This kit has anadditional sprue of parts for the Rolls Royce Merlin engines. Also now available are the 1/72 VickersValiant and B-17G ($54.95 msrp). You can also order the 1/72 PZL LiM-5. This is a Polish built MiG-17. There are two schemes in the kit. One is the very colorful aircraft from the 45 th Experimental AirSqdn, Polish Air Force, 1993. The other is from JBG-37 from the DDR (East Germany), 1986. Kitlinxannounced that the Airfix 1/72 Avro Vulcan B2 was the best seller for the summer. Who knew? (Kitlinxhas also announced that you can order the LiM-5 from them. $35! Not sure what’s going on here, if it’san error or you’re paying a premium for the kit. Airfix lists it at £16.49 on their web site.)

Page 4

Gleaned from other sources; Eduard has announced a 1/48 Pro Pack MiG-21MF with 6 markingoptions. ($59.95 msrp) They are also offering a Limited Edition 1/72 B-25 w/ 10 marking options.($64.95 msrp) The box art does not define the Mark No. but the image shown depicts an earlier glassnosed version. It is possible that the kit contains a couple nose options. The blurb I saw did not say, providing minimal info. My suspicion is that this is not a new tool kit, but a licensed pop of an existingkit. (Hasegawa? Italeri?) I’m looking forward to this next one, Academy is releasing a 1/35 Panzer IIAusf. F ‘North Africa’ ‘New Tool’. ($44.00 msrp Academy/MRC) The kit has markings for 6 vehicles.MiniArt has a few new offerings, a 4 figure set of WWII Royal Engineers in 1/35, a 1/35 NVA T-55A(East German I’m told, not North Vietnamese) and a 1/35 G7107 (Chevy?) 4 x 4 1.5 ton cargo truckwith crew. Also from MiniArt is a 1/35 M3 Lee Mid Prod. Sahara w/ Crew. Be advised that the crew isan older figure set that has been out of production. It’s a nice set, but not a tank crew. There is one UStanker in the set, the rest are all characters from Sahara. There is a French Foreign Legionnaire, aBrit. Tommy, an Australian desert rat, and I believe, a Sudanese. Roden is bringing out a 1/35 1947Silverside Bus. An American Icon. It’s the vehicle that Greyhound used in their rise to the top ininterstate travel. My question is, why 1/35 and not 1/25? It’s different enough to tempt me. Takom hasannounced a 1/35 T29 heavy tank ($69.95 msrp). Dora Wings is bringing out a 1/48 Curtiss Wright AT-9 ($64.99 msrp). And finally, Fine Molds has a 1/72 F-4E (Early) “Vietnam War” on the way. This is thelong nose USAF version of the F-4 Phantom II. Those that have seen the kit say that the sprues areset up so that by swapping out a sprue or two they can produce another version. You can read that asshort nosed Navy versions. Those that have seen the kit say it may be the best F-4 kit, yet.

For those of you that favor Revell Germany kits, if you are looking to match your colors to the Revellinstruction colors, Kit Linx is now carrying Revell acrylics and enamels.

Johnny Mac ALERT! Johnny Mac ALERT!! Sprue Bros. has promoted a new kit from PhantomPhreaks Models. Kit No.K32/001 is a 1/32 scale RF-4C Phantom II from the Alabama ANG with 35 th

Anniversary Special markings. It’s a Revell Germany kit in the box and comes with a $129.99 pricetag. Also announced is their K32-002 1/32 scale Resin Correction set for the Revell Germ. Kit. It fixesthe RF-4E & F-4E/G marks. It is not clear if the correction set comes in the box with the RF-4C.

There are a number of mail order houses that run ‘weekend sales’. On occasion some of the localshops also have sales. I suspect that like me, you are trying to stretch you modeling dollars as far aspossible. I have been posting those sales on the forum so that you can take advantage should youchoose. I will usually have those up on Saturday. There are about 6 retailers that contact me on theweekend. I usually only post those that have something worthwhile or are related to something themembers build.

Now to be sure, I firmly believe in supporting your local hobby shop. Once they go, it will be a whilebefore another takes its place. For when you need a bottle of paint, it’s tough to go on line and order it.I know you can find it, but it becomes tough to swallow when they tack on $8 to $15 for shipping andhandling. But I also understand you don’t want to go driving around to 3 or 4 shops trying to find thatelusive color. I’m going to start a topic on the forum for paint and hobby shops. I’ll list the paint linesthat my local shops are carrying. Please take the time to post what you can find at your local shops. Please note where the shop is located. I’m hoping that this will become a quick reference for when youneed that certain Gunze color. Where to go to find it, or call to see if they have it. One last note on this, the occasional bottle of paint won’t do it. If we expect our local shops to stay in business, buying that

Page 5

occasional bottle of paint won’t cover the cost of doing business. I know it seems like it should, withtoday’s prices, but it doesn’t.

Had this been a normal year, this issue would have been the one where I beg people to show up forBayCon. I have mixed emotions over this. I’m glad I don’t have to beg for people to show up, but I’mdisappointed there is no BayCon again this year. Oh well, maybe next year. (Keep your fingerscrossed.)

Stay safe, my friends!

God bless America! Pray for our servicemen overseas.

Happy modeling and give kits to kids!

Modeler’s Bookshelf:

Car Craft 3 – Jaguar E-Type, British Motoring Masterpieceby Lance Cole. ©2020 Pen and Sword Books, Barnsley. England. 64 pages, soft-bound. $28.95 msrp.

After discovering the Tank Craft and Land Craft series somewhat recently, I had high hopes when I found Pen & Sword were producing a Car Craft series. Of the 4 titles available, the E-Type was the most interesting to me. And you could say that my interest level is high.

The Jaguar E-Type, or as most Americans know it, the XKE, is considered by many, including, they claim, the late, great, Enzo Ferrari, as the most beautiful car ever built. It was produced from 1961 to 1975. Series 1 cars included a Coupe, 2+2 Coupe, and Roadster. The Series 1 cars built between 1961 - 64 were powered by a 3.8 liter 6 cylinder engine. From 1965 to 1967 they were powered by a 4.2 liter 6cylinder. As were the 1968 Series 1.5 cars. The Series 2 cars offered the same 4.2 liter from 1968 to 1971. The Series 3 cars had a 5.3 liter V-12, but was only offered in the 2+2 Coupe and Roadster, from71 to 74.

Based on the previous book series offered by Pen and Sword, which are geared towards enthusiast and model builders, I expected it to be along a similar format, and it is, somewhat. The front section is a brief history of the vehicle and numerous photos of the actual vehicles. This is followed by a few pagesof profiles, and then the modeling section. This is where my disappointment set in. The author explains in the text, that because the two major E-Type collector clubs in the UK, have no sub group of plastic modelers, but do have a sub groups of die cast collectors, the aft portion of the book, the Modeling section, is entirely Die Cast. He portrays and discusses the attributes of available die cast XKEs. There are a couple paragraphs in the text that mention plastic and resin models, and in which scales they have been produced. And a couple paragraphs that address the Airfix 1/32 scale kit which was originally

Page 6

produced in 1963, its longevity, and the variations it has seen. The author mentions the Tamiya kit that is held in high regard. I know of no Tamiya Type E / XKE kit.

I don’t understand the author’s intent with this book, nor do I think the author does, either. It’s not aimed at the plastic modeler / enthusiast as the other series he has written for. He walks away from that.If it’s for the collector /enthusiast of full size E-Types, I’m pretty sure they already have histories in larger formats, with larger photos, more pages and possibly more dedicated to particular versions or uses, such as racing. And if aimed at the Die Cast collectors, why not make the whole volume about diecasts and be more inclusive of all the options available.Revell announced a ‘new tool’ 1/24 scale kit of the E-Type Coupe in 2020. Availability has been delayed due to some molding problems I’m told. I did a search and found that Michael’s has been offering them for a few months. Any kits you find of the Roadsters, at this time, are from older molds. Ibelieve the plan is to replace all of the old molds.I obtained my copy for $8 through Amazon. If you intend to “have a go” at the Revell ‘new tool’ and have no other sources of information on the E-Type and can score a similar deal, I might say go for it. It depends on which day it is. Otherwise I have to give this volume a rating on the Del Scale of a thumbs down.Other volumes currently in the series are Citroen DS, Porsche 911, and Bugatti Type 35 Grand Prix car. John Nickerson
