Proverbs 3:5-6 tell us: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.”

I have heard that passage quoted at least 1000 times in my life, but I understand it a little bit more today. As many of you know my son Zak has had two cancer surgeries in two weeks of each other. Many people have asked us “how is he doing” and, because of his autism, “does he understand what is really going on?” My answer is, “I don’t know.”

All I know is that I have explained everything to him, and when I tell him the next thing he has had to do, he does it without hesitating. I fi gured out why. He trusts me.

You see I used to carry him on my shoulders everywhere because it put him above the crowd and in a safe place. When the only way up in some stores was an escalator, he was afraid of them until he was 18 years old, so he would get on my back and ride. I never let him down. So he trusts me now. He may not understand but he trusts.

Isn’t that what we preach about our heavenly Father? Isn’t that what Jesus alluded to about our earthly father doing good for us, so how much more our Heavenly Father does for us. I have learned a lot from my Zak in my life, and now he is teaching me about a whole new level of trust. Even when I don’t understand.

ORNER

Rev. Barry Kidwell

Diana and I would like to extend our thanks to all of our family at First-Centenary. Who really ever expects cancer to enter your family’s life? But since it has, we have been blessed with an outpouring of love. We appreciate the prayers, food, visits, people stepping into the pulpit for me on Sunday nights, and others taking on the Wednesday outreach; and especially Cindy for organizing the way all this love could be shown. Keep praying for our Zak and thanks again for letting us be a part of this great family.

NEXUS Fall RetreatOur Annual Fall Youth Retreat

“NEXUS” is just a couple of weeks away and we can’t wait! It will be November 2nd through the 4th at Ocoee Ridge Camp.

This is a District-wide retreat! Last year we had 11 different UMC churches attend! It is basically a mini-conference with camp style activities thrown in. There are four sessions over the weekend with music, games, and messages, as well as, community strengthening things like “Family Gatherings” (which is time set aside to meet with only your youth group). Our theme for the weekend is “COLLIDE.” We are very excited for another great weekend of worship and fun!

Mustard Tree Worship at 5 p.m. in The Vine – Rev. Barry Kidwell

In the SanctuaryThis communion service is one of the most

meaningful of the year as we remember the lives and Christian witness of those members of our church who died in the past year, along with the saints of all ages.

In preparation for this year’s service, the Book of Names will once again be available in the Narthex. You are invited and encouraged to record the names of your loved ones you would like to remember. Those “named” may be church members, or they may be family or friends, heroes or heroines from other places and times.

On November 4th the Book of Names will be on the altar as a reminder of our communion with these saints. You will fi nd the book on the podium in the Narthex on Sunday, October 28.

In The VineAll Saints Sunday will be celebrated in The Vine by remembering

those “Saints” of the faith who have walked before us in this life and entered into life everlasting. Everyone in worship that day will be invited to bring a picture or small memento to celebrate the life of a spouse, parent, child, sibling, mentor, or friend to place on the altar. If you have any questions about this please contact the church offi ce or Pastor Will.
