Generic medications can provide great savings but are they as effective as the

brand name meds? According to the FDA, before generics can be sold, they must go

through a rigorous examination in order to show they are as effective as their

brand name counterparts. This includes proof that the product provides the same amount of active ingredient in the same

timeframe as the brand name drug, though it must be different in shape, color, and

other characteristics that don’t impact the drug’s effectiveness. Since the generic

has no research or development costs, the company can provide it at a much lower

price. Next time you receive a prescription, ask your doctor whether a generic is

available for substitution and if it would work for you.

“Memorial Gifts of New Hymnals”

Our church has approved the purchase of a new hymnal, “Celebrating Grace Hymnal for Baptist Worship”. This new hymnal offers advantages such as; on-line worship planning and music selection, new music as well as familiar hymns, coordinated children’s and youth music. Memorial contributions in honor or memory of family or friends will be used to purchase the new books. One or several may be given, to honor loved ones, at $20 per hymnal. Each hymnal will be labeled with the names of honoree and giver. Special Celebrating Grace gift envelopes are available throughout the church and provide for listing of giver and honoree names. These memorial gifts are ideal for Christmas and other special occasions. A goal of 1600 has been set to be given by year end.

Lakewood Elementary Partnership Update

Thank you for being faithful in responding to the challenge of supporting Lakewood Elementary in many areas of ministry. Here is an update in several of the areas of ministry.

1. TutoringWe now have over 50 people tutoring each week. Most of the tutors have signed up for an hour and are able to help two students during that time. That is touching the lives of over 100 students a week. There will always be the need for more tutors. Talk to some of the tutors and let them tell you what it is like. Pray about being a mentor and tutor to some students who need a little help.

2. Fall Festival We will be helping with the school Fall Festival on Thursday, November 10 from 5:00– 7:00 p.m. If you can help with refreshments, manning a booth, setting up activities, face painting, or other assistance needed contact Linda Horn at 256-539-0379 or Mike Pearce.

3. Adopt-A-Class MinistryThere are 23 classrooms at Lakewood. We are asking classes and departments to adopt one of the classes for 2011-2012. You would help provide support for the teacher, help as room mom or dad’s on special days, look for special needs of children, and possibly provide chaperons on a field trip. If you are interested contact Linda Horn or Mike Pearce

4. Food DistributionWe were asked early on to help with the food distribution provided by Target but now we know that the Target volunteers provide all the help they need on distribution days. Next year we may provide a weekend meal pack for families in need. Watch for future announcements about this ministry.

5. Support of the PTAMany of you have responded by joining the PTA of Lakewood. The first meeting was cancelled due to the grand opening of the Target Library Extreme Make-Over. We have been asked to help with refreshments at the next PTA meeting in November. If you would like to help with providing refreshments or helping with serving please contact Beverly Brown at 256-551-2291 or Mike Pearce.

Angel Food Ministry and the Future – Thanksgiving Blessing

Many of you have asked about the loss of the Angel Food Ministry and whether we will try to begin with a new ministry. The word we have right now is that we will wait and see. There is a new ministry similar to Angel Food becoming available but we want to make sure it is rock solid before we begin this ministry in our community. Please help us pray about God’s leadership in this and the needs of our community.

In the mean time, The Rock and Manna House will sponsor the Thanksgiving Blessing to the community. They provide a full Thanksgiving meal to families in need. In years past they have provided thousands of meals. If you would like to make a contribution to this year’s Thanksgiving Blessing make your check out to The Manna House and turn it in the offering plate or bring it to the finance office. This is an excellent ministry that is screened for need and provides a wonderful blessing to our community.

Last Wednesday our church voted to purchase new hymnals. After twenty years of service it is time for a new hymnbook for use in worship. Several options were considered, with the Celebrating Grace hymnal chosen for our church. i am grateful for the great work of the Music and Worship Committee as they have been working on this process.

You now have an opportunity to give hymnals to the church in honor or memory of people that you love. A gift of $20 will purchase a new hymnal that will have a label

affixed on the inside with the name of the person that you are honoring. This method is a wonderful way to provide a valuable worship resource for our church and to honor the ones that we love.

You will find envelopes around the church. Simply put your donation money in the envelopes, write the names of the people that you want to honor on the envelope flap, and place it in the offering plate or turn it in to the church office. i hope that you will join me in giving to this special opportunity.

A Retirement Announcement

Catherine Miller has shared with me that she will be retiring from her work as Pastoral Assistant for our church. Catherine has given thirty years of service on our church staff. During this time she has taken care of the Prayer List and was the benevolence ministry of the church for many years. i am most grateful for her faithful commitment to First Baptist Church. She grew up in our church and does love “her church.” This week will be Catherine’s last week of working in the church office. Of course, she will continue to be active in the life of our church. in the near future we will be announcing a time for the church to honor and thank Catherine for her outstanding service.

As we move through this transition in our church staff, you may wonder who will do what Catherine has been doing. Kristi Taylor is the Ministry Assistant to Jud Reasons and me. She will take on the responsibility for the hospital list and the prayer lists that the church produces. She will work closely with the Receptionist in receiving news that you need to share with the church office. in the future, if you have a need that should be placed on the Prayer List, just call the church office and share the information with the person who answers the phone. This person will make sure that Kristi gets the information.
