In November, after months of teacher input, ISK unveiled its new Clippers Compass. The Clippers Compass is a list of ten expectation for the Clipper the community at ISK. As you may well know, ISK’s team name and mascot is Clippers. This is derived from our school’s Anchor Values of Communication, Lifelong Learning, Problem Solving, People Skills, and Responsibility. These letters form the acronym CLPPR, which we have adjusted to Clipper.

The ten expectations contained in the Clippers Compass outline positive behaviors that we hope to see from all members of the ISK or Clipper community. Each expectation is also tied to one of our Anchor Values. The purpose of the Clippers Compass is to remind our students, staff, and parents that we can all make a difference at ISK and that our actions and words can help to further foster a sense of pride and closeness amongst our community. We truly hope that the Clippers Compass will help in giving greater direction and clarity to ISK and our community.

The East Asia Regional Council of Schools hosted its 50th annual EARCOS Leadership Conference (ELC2018) at the Shangri La Hotel on October 25-27, 2018. This year ISK Executive Director Datin Noor Ainie Abdullah, Assistant Executive Director Dr. Nurita Abu Tahir, and Principal Benjamin Tamte all attended the conference which boasts attendance of over 1,000 school leaders, vendors, and presenters. This year’s sessions centered on the theme of “Celebrating our Legacy, Inspiring Our Future” and dealt with topics ranging from school recruitment, curriculum, time management, mindfulness, and learning technology.

ISK is one of around 150 EARCOS member schools in the whole of East and Southeast Asia. We are proud of our affiliation with EARCOS and feel that its professional development is a key component in keeping ISK at the forefront of educational trends and learning. Most importantly the opportunities offered by EARCOS align with our belief in of fostering Lifelong Learning. In schools, students are not the only individuals who need to continue their growth and learning. Teachers and school leaders also benefit from the new and varied learning opportunities such as those that EARCOS provides. We look forward to more years of growth and collegiality with EARCOS.

This year’s conference was highlighted by the incredible speeches of three inspiring keynote speakers. British educator Sir John Jones, Finnish educator Pasi Sahlberg, and Vietnamese humanitarian Kim Phuc Phan Thi, better known as “the Napalm Girl,” opened each morning’s session with touching, insightful, and inspiring words. As always, we gained a great deal hearing inspiring, practical, and relevant words and ideas. We also revelled in seeing old friends, networking and collaborating with colleagues in the region, and gaining valuable tips and resources which have been brought back to ISK.

This amazing jam packed day of activities started off with a very fun cartoon story of Deepavali by the student council, which especially grabbed the attention of the younger students. Just after, we had an amazing performance by the elementary, giving us spectacular dance routines. Afterwards, depending on your house colour you would go to one of the activities such as Henna design, Rangoli, Speed Saree and Indian cultural dancing. When our first activity was finished we went down to enjoy some delicious Indian food and a bit of fruit, sponsored by the PTA.

To wrap the day up, we all went to the hall for a short announcement, followed by our last activity which was DIYA activity (candle holders), while we could also free dance, finish our Rangoli and Henna designs. During that time we also had some awesome parents, who did an amazing traditional Indian dance routine. Then Mr. Ben gave his kind thanks and farewell, while the PTA sold the last of their Indian food and with that we ended the day of fun and celebration.

On the 2nd of November 2018, ISK’s annual

costume party was held. Many outsiders, par-

ents, teachers and students attended the ex-

citing event. A variety of games were held,

various choices of meals and of course

everyone's favorite, the haunted hallway.

The event kicked off at 7:30 pm with the costume parade,

continuing on with a speech from Mr Ben. After that, the

guests went to have some delightful snacks. The kids also

got to experience some trick or treating. Many enjoyed the

haunted hallway.

The piñata was also one of the favorites because they would

get free candy. It ended off by having the lucky draw. Many

thanks to the parents, volunteers and of course student

council for making this event happen.

On Friday November 30th, students in Kindergarten and Grade 1 went on a field trip. They visited Petrosains Playsmart and the city library. Everyone had so much fun! The downstairs area is filled with math and science challenges, such as stacking, counting and building. The staff there were very helpful and encouraged the ISK students to complete each challenge. It was lovely for the teachers and parent helpers to see the children trying new things.

After a short stop in the gift shop, we headed upstairs to the library. The facility is very new and well equipped with soft seating as well as tables and chairs. There is a vast array of books in both local languages and English, including story books for younger children and independent readers for those who are more confident. There is also a

young adult section and reference books for older children.

The children, parents and teachers spent some time exploring and sharing books before watching a short puppet show which was put on by the library staff. Membership at the library is available for both locals and foreigners for a small annual fee and books can be taken home for up to 2 weeks - I highly recommend this for everyone!

This trip was both educational and enjoyable and we hope to return again soon.

My Malaysian Studies class went to Sungai Lembing on the 4th of December 2018. We went there by school bus so it took us about an hour to reach there. First stop was the Tin Mine. The Tin Mine is so big and deep with 12 floors in total and the total length of 332 kilometres.

After we were done with the Tin Mine, we went to the hanging bridge and ate tau fu fa. The tau fu fa was so delicious that I felt like staying there so I could eat it everyday. Before we left the hanging bridge, some of the students bought tau fu fa for their parents.

Finally, we went to the 3D Art Gallery. There isn’t that much there, only a bunch of pictures painted on the wall. You have to stand in front of the image and take a picture using your phone then it looks 3D when you are done.

Public speaking is important to us as it will help us in our future. Do you think it’s important? In my opinion it is, it also helps us to get prepared earlier for our future.

Ms. Priscilla told us that we are going to have a public speaking competition. She gave us a few weeks to find our topic and memorize our speech.

We had a few rehearsal before the competition. I became too nervous that I forgot my speech. I shivered a little since I was too nervous. Though, I am not the only one who was nervous. My friends were also nervous but we all tried our best.

Finally it’s the day of the competition. Numbers were drawn to see who would go first. Eventually, I was the one who was supposed to go first. It went well as I had been practicing a lot last night. It took some time for us to finish the whole competition. We all did our best and we had a great time. I learned a lot and this can also help us to gain confidence.

The Basketball After-school Club has been going strong for over two years. Every Tuesday this small group of dedicated players meet for training. They go through an extensive warm up session with Mr. Carroll. This includes 4 laps around the gym, dynamic stretches, and a group stretch.

After the stretches are finished we run drills to improve our basketball skills. Skills like passing, shooting, rebounding and playing offense and defence are really important to learn. Then we play 5 on 5, full-court basketball!

This past month we are happy to report that we have four, new women players. They have really helped to bring up the level of play for everyone.
