Brother Knights,
A little about
membership…
Membership should be
the foremost priority of
every Grand Knight and
Membership Director
throughout this great
state of Ohio. We have
done a fair job so far in
the first quarter of the
fraternal year but we all
know we could do much
better. Currently about
25% of the Council's
around the state are
carrying the load in new
membership. If the
State of Ohio is to
improve our
membership status and
grow as a jurisdiction
we need the other 75%
or roughly 300 councils
to step up and begin
recruiting.
October should be a big
month for us in Ohio. It
is a month that we
expect every council to
conduct a parish drive.
There is not a good
reason that a council
should not conduct a
parish drive during the
month of October.
Growth in new
membership brings new
Brother Knights, new
ideas, and new energy
into your councils.
Please get on track with
your councils
membership program
and sign up a new
member today.
Congratulations to the
August Membership
Contest winners and all
who brought in a new
member that month.
Contest winners should
be listed in State
Membership Director
Nick Gresko’s column.
The Supreme
Retention Process…
Council Retention
Chairmen please make
sure that you are
following the Supreme
Retention Process
exactly as prescribed. As
State Deputy I receive a
conservation list every
from the Supreme
Council. The list makes
me aware of all 1845s
that have been put on
file by each council. If a
member is on that list
that does not have a
phone number I will in
turn asking each Grand
Knight to provide one. If
there is no phone
number I can assume
that the Council’s
Retention Committee
has not made their
phone calls, the District
Deputy has not made
(Continued on page 2)
Mission Statement We as men of the Knights of
Columbus, men of faith, are
called through Baptism to
grow and increase in faith.
We are thereby summoned
to serve as witnesses to that
faith in our daily lives, in
the lives of our families, and
in the lives of others
throughout our
communities.
Mission Objective Fostering men united in a
faith that will continue the
growth of Fr. McGivney’s
dream ensuring the spread
of Columbianism; becoming
more visible through the
good works of Charity,
Unity, and Fraternity;
creating an atmosphere
which encourages and calls
all Catholic men to serve
with their Brothers.

his phone call, nor will the State
Retention Chairmen be able to
make their phone calls. Then
upon receipt of the Form 100
requesting suspension for
nonpayment of dues; will be
returned to the council and not
processed for failure to follow
the proper procedure of the
retention process. Additionally if
the council’s Form 365 does not
list a Council Retention
Chairman the retention process
will immediately stop and the
member will not be suspended.
Some thoughts on degree
work…
Please continue to schedule
frequent degrees. Our
requirement is one 1st Degree
per District per month,
statewide. Every District Deputy
is required to schedule and
conduct a 1st Degree in his
district every month. District
Deputies or Grand Knights
should be listing all of the
degrees on the State Website.
The degree posting page should
be overflowing with scheduled
degrees yet day after day I see
few degrees are being posted.
There should be a minimum of
80 degrees per month posted on
the State Website. If you
schedule them they will come. If
you post them others can see
them and they will come.
Please discuss with your
candidates about the proper
dress attire when they come to
take any of the degrees. A
candidate in t-shirts and shorts
is just not an acceptable dress
for a candidate making a degree.
They should be dressed at the
very minimum some type of
Dockers or dress pants and a
polo shirt or dress shirt.
Our Fall Fundraiser the
Football Frenzy
Sweepstakes…
The Football Frenzy
Sweepstakes is coming to a close
this month. Council sales
returns are due to Past State
Deputy Gary Eckstein.
Remember an increase this year
of $50,000 in profits at the State
Council will negate the $1.00 per
capita increase that will be
proposed to the delegates at the
next state convention. Please do
all you can do to the sell your
share of these Football Frenzy
tickets.
Consider it your hedge fund
against the per capita proposal.
I just can't believe it's that
difficult for 58,000 Knights to
sell 35,000 tickets.
Supreme Council Icon
Program…
The Holy
Family
Icon
program
will begin
during the
month of
October.
Four icons
will
circulate
through the State of Ohio over
the next 20 months. The Icon
should be scheduled in each
district for an entire month.
This should give you some time
to set up services in your district
for each council.
Look further in this issue of the
“Voice of the Spirit” for the
schedule and when the icon will
come to your district. Please
take full advantage of this
prayerful opportunity within
your console and parishes.
State Council Financials…
The State Council has paid out
all 2015 Super Cash Bonanza
Rebates. The State Council has
also paid to date all 2015
Measure Up Grant Checks
except to those councils that
may have sent in a late check
during the month of September.
At first opportunity we will issue
these Grants Checks and get
them back to their respective
councils. The State Council has
also paid to date all 2015 State
Convention Delegate Mileage
and Per Diem checks. The
checks have been set to the
Financial Secretary of record.
The only checks that may not be
paid are the councils who have
recently sent in the State Per
Capita check. Remember that
the 2015 Convention Mileage
and Per Diem check is not paid
until the State Council receives
the State Per Capita check.
A little about the Statewide
Retreat…
Please reserve the weekend of
February 4th and 5th, 2016 for
the Ohio State Council State
Retreat. A Reservation Form,
event costs, rooming and
rooming availability will be
available in the next issue of the
“Voice of the Spirit”. Please
make every effort attend this 24
hour day with your Brother
Knights in some fraternity,
meditation, and prayer.

District Deputy Midyear Meeting…
The District Deputy Midyear Meeting will be
weekend of January 8, 9, and 10, 2016 at the
Columbus Hilton at Easton. Supreme Council
Membership and Programming Consultant Joe
Ramirez and Supreme Council Training Consultant
Tom Ciborski will lead the day of training on
Saturday afternoon.
Every District Deputy is required to attend this
weekend conference. Please plan to attend and clear
your calendar for this all-important weekend. Later
this month I will send a personal invitation to each
District Deputy with his requirements needed for that
weekend. Plan to provide information concerning
required forms, membership, programming, and
degree work that day.

The State Website is up and running for the 1st
General Program grading period. Yes we have had
some web issues. All problems to my knowledge have
been worked out with Webmaster Brother Gilliland
on a person to person basis. He has taken to task the
corrections of any deficiencies that may have come
along. Remember our website is only 90 days old so
it’s just getting up on its feet. Please be patient with
us. If you have any issues please address them to me
and I'll get with you and Brother Bob to get them
resolved.
“Town Hall” Meetings…
The “Town Hall” meetings seem to be working well. I
have attended four meetings in the Archdiocese of
Cincinnati. Meetings have been conducted in
Norwood, Minster, West
Chester, and in Dayton. All of
the meetings have been very
well attended. There has been
excellent dialogue and debate
among myself, other State
Officers, State Directors and the Brother Knights in
attendance. All meetings start at 7:00 p.m.

"There has been a delay in the printing and design of the Prayer Books and Online
Program for the Holy Family Icon at Supreme. At this time I am not sure when those
will be printed and sent, although I suspect that it will be at the end of October 2015.
Therefore please know that there will be a delay in the start of the Holy Family Icon

REFLECTIONS
FROM OUR WORTHY
STATE CHAPLAIN Fr. Edward Janoch
The Month of October is the
secondary month dedicated to
Our Blessed Mother, because
October 7th is the day we
remember Our Lady of the
Rosary. This month is also
dedicated to Life. Thirdly, the
feast day of St. John Paul II is on
October 22nd and he was a great
defender of Life. So this month I
have supplied us with some
quotes from St. John Paul II on
the Blessed Virgin Mary, the
Rosary, life, family and marriage.
Enjoy.
“Mary is the sure path to our
meeting with Christ. Devotion
to the Mother of the Lord,
when it is genuine, is always
an impetus to a life guided by
the spirit and values of the
Gospel.”
“Life is entrusted to man as a
treasure which must not be
squandered, as a talent which
must be used well.”
“Marriage is an act of will
that signifies and involves a
mutual gift, which unites the
spouses and binds them to
their eventual souls, with
whom they make up a sole
family - a domestic church.”
"Abortion, euthanasia, human
cloning, for example, risk
reducing the human person to
a mere object: life and death
to order, as it were!"
“The great danger for family
life, in the midst of any society
whose idols are pleasure,
comfort and independence,
lies in the fact that people
close their hearts and become
selfish.”
"How beautiful is the family
that recites the Rosary every
evening."
“Freedom consists not in
doing what we like, but in
having the right to do what we
ought.”
“As the family goes, so goes the
nation and so goes the whole
world in which we live.”
“From Mary we learn to
surrender to God's Will in all
things. From Mary we learn to
trust even when all hope seems
gone. From Mary we learn to
love Christ her Son and the
Son of God!”
“Love between man and
woman cannot be built
without sacrifices and self-
denial.”
"The cemetery of the victims of
human cruelty in our century
is extended to include yet
another vast cemetery, that of
the unborn."
"Euthanasia is a grave
violation of the law of God,
since it is the deliberate and
morally unacceptable killing
of a human person."
‘The Gospel of life must be
proclaimed and human life
defended in all places and all
times."
“The Rosary is my favorite
prayer.”
Did you know St. Pope John Paul
II’s love of the Rosary inspired
Pope Francis to pray at least 15
mysteries every day? In 2005, he
recounted participating in a 1985
Rosary led by the saint. Pope
Francis said “I felt that this man,
chosen to lead the Church, was
following a path up to his Mother
in the sky, a path set out on from
his childhood. And I became
aware of the density of the words
of the Mother of Guadalupe to
Saint Juan Diego: ‘Don’t be
afraid, am I not your mother?’”
As Knights we have all received
the weapon against evil. It is this
devotion that will strengthen us
along our way in life. We are
called to have this rosary in our
hands and in our pockets
wherever we go. Let us not forget
this.
Let us conclude with a prayer by
St. John Paul II from his
Encyclical: Evangelium Vitae
(Gospel of Life).
O Mary, bright dawn of the
new world, Mother of the living,
to you do we entrust the cause of
life. Look down, O Mother, upon
the vast numbers of babies not
allowed to be born, of the poor
whose lives are made difficult, of
men and women who are victims
of brutal violence, of the elderly
and the sick killed by indifference
or out of misguided mercy. Grant
that all who believe in your son
may proclaim the Gospel of life

with honesty and love to the
people of our time. Obtain for
them the grace to accept that
Gospel as a gift ever new, the joy
of celebrating it with gratitude
throughout their lives, and the
courage to bear witness to it
resolutely, in order to build,
together with all people of good
will, the civilization of truth and
love, to the praise and glory of
God, the Creator and lover of life.
Amen.

St. John Paul II
October 22nd
Karol Josef Wotjtyła was born in 1920 in
Wadowice, Poland. After his ordination
to the priesthood and theological studies
in Rome, he returned to his homeland
and resumed various pastoral and
academic tasks. He became first
auxiliary bishop and, in 1964,
Archbishop of Krakow and took part in
the Second Vatican Council. On
16 October 1978 he was elected pope and
took the name John Paul II. His
exceptional apostolic zeal, particularly
for families, young people and the sick,
led him to numerous pastoral visits
throughout the world. Among the many
fruits which he has left as a heritage to
the Church are above all his rich
Magisterium and the promulgation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church as well as the Code of
Canon Law for the Latin Church and for the Eastern Churches. In Rome on 2 April 2005, the eve of the
Second Sunday of Easter (or of Divine Mercy), he departed peacefully in the Lord. On 1 May 2011 he
was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI. On 27 April 2014 he was canonized by Pope Francis, in Rome.

Because God rested on the seventh day, we want to celebrate Sunday together as a family.
For Families
Sunday is the Day of the Lord in
which we remember and give
thanks for the work of creation,
his gift of the Holy Spirit, and
the joy of our faith.
Celebrating the sacredness of
this holy day each week
together as a family strengthens
us in our vocation to holiness.
Meditation
In the Gospel we do not find discourses on the family but an event which is worth more than any words: God wanted to be born and to grow up in a human family. . . . When he was 12 years old, he stayed behind in the Temple and it took his parents all of three days to find him. With this act he made them understand that he “had to see to his Father’s affairs,” in other words, to the mission that God had entrusted to him. This Gospel episode reveals the most authentic and profound vocation of the family: that is, to accompany each of its members on the path of the discovery of God and of the plan that he prepared for him or her. Mary and Joseph taught Jesus primarily by their example: in his parents he came to know the full beauty of faith, of love for God and for his Law, as well as the demands of justice, which is totally fulfilled in love. . . .
The Holy Family of Nazareth is truly the “prototype” of every Christian family which, united in the sacrament of marriage and nourished by the Word and the Eucharist, is called to carry out the wonderful vocation and mission of being the living cell not only of society but also of the Church, as sign and instrument of unity for the entire human race.
Pope Benedict XVI Angelus Address, Dec 31, 2006
1. What does it mean to me to see the rest of the family pray or attend Mass with me? 2. Why might God want me to be a part of this particular family, giving me these people to love and care for? 3. How can I help my friends and family members discover God’s plan for them? How might they help me do the same? Family Project
Sunday is a special day, a “mini-
Easter” during which we
celebrate Christ’s victory over
sin and death.
Make the day special by sharing
a special meal as a family. You
might also consider planning a
Sunday trip to visit an
adoration chapel to spend time
together as a family adoring
God, truly present to us in the
Eucharist.
Scripture Reading of the
Month
Psalm 128, 1-6
Happiness comes to families who
follow the Lord.
Blessed are all who fear the
LORD.
and who walk in his ways.
What your hands provide you
will enjoy;
your will be blessed and
prosper:
Your wife will be like a fruitful
vine
within your home,
Your children like young olive
plants
around your table.
Just so will the man be blessed
who fears the LORD.
May the LORD bless you from
Zion;
may you see Jerusalem’s
prosperity
all the days of your life,
and live to see your children’s
children.
Peace upon Israel!
On the last Sunday of the
month, discuss as a family
which Scripture verse stood out
the most for each member.
BUILDING THE DOMESTIC CHURCH
7 | VOICE OF THE SPIRIT | OCTOBER 2015 | WWW.KOFCOHIO.ORG
While St. Maria is universally
known as the Patroness of Purity,
her greatest virtue was her
unyielding forgiveness of her
attacker even in the midst of
horrendous physical suffering, a
forgiveness that would completely
convert him and set him on a path
to personal holiness. In March His
Holiness, Pope Francis, announced
an Extraordinary Holy Year of
Mercy beginning December 8th.
This visit of the major relics of St.
Maria Goretti is an effort on the
part of her Basilica Shrine, the
Congregation of the Causes of
Saints, and Treasures of the
Church, to prepare and catechize
the United States for this great
celebration in the life of the
Church.
St. Maria’s remains are inside a
glass-sided casket. Inside the
casket is a wax statue within which
repose her skeletal remains.
None of her sacred remains are
visible. Nevertheless, the skeleton
is complete save for some small
fragments that have been taken for
placement in altars and for use in
the Church’s ministry (e.g., in
exorcism). In addition, her mother
permitted her right arm to be
donated to the Church of St.
Nicholas (now known as the
Sanctuary of St. Maria Goretti) in
her birth town of Corinaldo. It was
with her right arm that Maria
defended her purity and prevented
Alessandro Serenelli from raping
her. The arm is contained within a
reliquary above the high altar.
A Transformation to God
St. Maria Goretti's heroic story of
love and forgiveness would not be
complete without one of its first
miraculous fruits: the conversion of
Alessandro Serenelli, Maria's
murderer.
Immediately after his brutal
assault on young Maria Goretti,
Alessandro was imprisoned
temporarily in Nettuno and then
transferred to Regina Coeli prison
in Rometo to stand trial. After
vehemently denying his guilt, he
finally broke down in the face of
overwhelming testimony. Since he
was a minor, he was sentenced to
only thirty years hard labor.
A priest came to see him soon
afterward, and he turned on the
cleric in rage, howling like a
maniac and lunging at him.
In the days which followed,
Alessandro lost his appetite and
grew nervous. After six years of
prison, he was near the brink of
despair. Then one night, Maria
appeared to him in his cell. She
smiled at Alessandro and was
surrounded by lilies, the flower
symbolic of purity.
From that moment, peace invaded
Alessandro's heart, and he began to
live a constructive life.
After serving his sentence,
Alessandro took up residence at a
Capuchin monastery, working in
the garden as a tertiary. He asked
pardon of Maria's mother and
accompanied her to Christmas
Mass in the parish church where he
spoke before the hushed
congregation, acknowledging his
sin and asking God's forgiveness
and the pardon of the community.
Forty years later, on June 24, 1950,
Maria was canonized at St. Peter's
basilica in Rome, with Alessandro's
heart now firmly converted to the
Lord. A miraculous fruit of Maria's
life, indeed!
Testament of Alessandro
Serenelli
Alessandro Serenelli died on May
6th, 1970 in the Capuchin convent
of Macerata. He left the following
testimony, dated May 5, 1961, as
his spiritual legacy:
"I'm nearly 80 years old. I'm about
to depart.
"Looking back at my past, I can see
that in my early youth, I chose a
bad path which led me to ruin
myself.

October 1 marks the
beginning of the 2nd quarter
of our fraternal year. Let’s
not wait. The time to start
recruiting is now, today, not
later. Let’s start recruiting
new members today and
help keep the vision of our
founding father, Venerable
Father Michael J. McGivney
alive. We need to continue to work with our Bishops and Priests and
provide them with our solidarity and support.
Recruiting new members is essential to the continued growth and well-
being of your council and the Order. Offering a man membership in the
Knights of Columbus gives him the opportunity to improve his own life and
his community. Membership allows him to experience the fraternal bond
that Knights share while growing closer to his family and faith.
Time and again Carl Anderson, our Supreme Knight has stressed that we
have nothing less than a moral obligation to offer membership in the
Knights of Columbus to every eligible Catholic man. To accomplish this, he
is asking dedicated brother Knights like you to be ambassadors, to reach
out to Catholic men and their families and invite them to become part of
our Order.
The Servant of God Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney founded our
Order more than 120 years ago, and yet we have only just begun to realize
our true potential. New members are essential to our success; the Order’s
tomorrow depends on our recruitment today!
We must be creative in our recruitment efforts, and our Supreme Knight
along with his team of Supreme officers has given us a tool to aide us.
Please encourage prospective members and their families to visit the “Why
Join?” feature at their convenience and in the comfort of their own homes.
In doing so, they can see why being a Knight of Columbus truly is an
experience of a lifetime.
So with record numbers in charity and charitable works, we as Knights
should not relax on our charitable works this should be a call for all of us to
strive to increase these numbers to even greater levels. To help keep us
moving in the correct direction we need to look at all possible avenues to
increase these numbers, for some it may be to help at one more event and
for others it might be to bring in new members or ask non-members to
help. As Supreme Knight Carl Anderson says we should offer the

experience of being a Knight of
Columbus to all eligible Catholic
men over 18 years of age. When
we do bring in a new member
don’t just bring him in, but help
mentor and listen to what they
have to say. They may have a
good idea of new events or even
how to revitalize an older event
if it has been declining over the
last few times you have tried it.
Remember to make all activities
a membership activity. This can
be as easy as just having a
membership table at each event
with pamphlets and information
about your council.
Our efforts should be focused on
Recruiting, Retention, New
Council Development and
Council Retention. With these
goals, we can surely keep the
vision alive and ensure the
continued growth of the Knights
of Columbus.
Thank you in advance for your
efforts to bring new members
into our ranks. Working
together, we are confident that
the Knights of Columbus will
continue to thrive as the
preeminent lay Catholic
organization in the world and in
our GREAT state of Ohio, “The
Membership State.”

PROACTIVE RETENTION Michael Jordon & William Wirtz,

It’s hard to believe that the first
quarter of our Fraternal Year
has come to a close.
This quarter has been a strong
one for membership and that is
great and let’s keep it up.
As we start the second quarter
it’s time to take a look at
another program that should
play an important part in our
councils and that program is the
Helping Hands Program. Why is
this program vital to us as
Brother Knights? This program
gives us the opportunity to help
our Brothers who are struggling.
We all know that in schools we
have the “No Child Left Behind”
parents and teachers are
responsible that all children
have the same opportunity to
learn. It is the same with our
program. We should never leave
a Brother behind. The Helping
Hands program fits into our
theme so well “Through Him,
With Him, In Him”.

Queen of Peace Council in
Cleveland. Installation of
Officers took place Sunday,
September 27. District Deputy
Tom Buehner has been a very
busy man. Not only has he
started two new councils within
the past year, he’s a new dad too
– talk about muli-tasking…
As I write this, three new
councils are in the works (there
may be more, but these are the
ones I know about right now) –
two in the Cleveland Diocese and
one in the Archdiocese of
Cincinnati. I think our Worthy
State Warden is looking to regain
that “Dynamo” label – rumor has
it he’s working Richard
Chunnick (Membership Director
for the Archdiocese) hard. So, if
my math is correct, and these
three in the works come to
fruition, that will make five for
the year – by December. Be still
my heart. That’s a great start,
but there are many more
opportunities out there to
bring Fr. McGivney’s dream
to life. That can only
happen if we all work
toward the same goal.
The great state of Ohio has
awakened from her long
slumber. A better way to state
that is that you guys are doing
an amazing job. Fr. Janoch’s
letter to pastors across the state
has produced several
opportunities – some for new
councils and some to revitalize
current councils.
If your council has become less
than dynamic, we have a way to
help cure that. The same process
we use to start new councils can
work wonders to revitalize your
council. Turn your council into a
force for good in your parish and
your community. For information
and help on turning things
around, you can contact me or
your Diocesan Membership
Director. Together we will work
to make your council stronger,
more vital, able to leap tall
buildings at a single bound. OK,
I can’t promise that last one, but
the other two are definitely do-
able.
New Council Development is not
a puzzle. It’s not brain surgery. It
is definitely not that difficult. We
have a proven process that just
works. Its’ been proven time and
time again across this great state
and across the country. The only
way the process doesn’t work is if
you don’t try it. Contact your
Diocesan Membership Director
or me with any questions. We’d
love to help you strengthen and
grow your council. Oh yeah, we
won’t turn down any new
councils either…

There still are 250 councils that have not recruited a new member this year so far! We would like for
this list down to be 200 or less by the end of October. Lets work hard at accomplishing this. We can
do this together!
DD's if you see one of your councils on this list help them this month get a new member.
Diocesan Membership Directors if you see councils in your diocese pay them a visit this
month or get on the phone and call them and help them recruit a new member this month.
Grand Knights if you see your council on this list what are you going to do this month to
recruit a new member into your council?
Remember—MORE Knights bring MORE hands and hearts, to raise MORE funds and to
evangelize, doing God's good works helping MORE people!
Go out there and get a bunch of new members this month! Inspector Membership knows we can get
this list to 200 or less by the end of October!!! The Inspector will be on the phone this weekend help-
ing councils. What is your council or district going to do to decrease this list?

GENERAL SERVICE PROGRAMS
Congratulations to the July, and August Family of the Month from Supreme.
In July from Council 1756 in Versailles is the Travis and Carolyn Wilker
Family. For August, from Council 7879 in Perrysburg, is the Robert and
Carol Warnimont Family. This program from Supreme is a great way to
recognize the families that work hard for your Council. Just submit your
Monthly winner at the Council level.
Remember the second reporting period ends at the end of the month, and are
due by November 5th to the Reporting Director. Also remember to review the
comments made by the Directors and make sure that he did not return it for
more information. Is your Council using the poster given on the State Tour to
keep track of your programming? It will make filling out the SP#7 form for
the Columbian Award easier.
October 3rd thru 11th was designated Charitable Service Outreach Week.
What will your Council be doing for your Community and Church? Consider
doing a worthy project even if it takes longer than this week.
Mike Nau, the Youth Director, would like for me to remind the Diocesan
District Deputies that it is their responsibility to hold the Regional Soccer
Challenge and send him the winners from the contest. By the end of October
your Council should be ordering the Free Throw Championship Kits from
Supreme. Looking ahead to November it will be time to order the Catholic
Citizenship Essay Contest, and Christmas Poster Contest.
The work your Council is doing will only strengthen the Community, and
Church in the area your Council serves.

FAMILY
Each Sunday at mass I
see the same woman.
She has some ailment,
possible the remnants of
a stroke, that causes her
difficulty in walking.
She sits in the back so
her walker can be put
against the wall and is
assisted to communion
by a gentleman I can
only assume is her
husband. He holds her
arm the whole way to
the altar while the
walker stays against the
wall.
A few weeks ago, it
occurred to me what a
beautiful sight this truly
is, what a great example
it is, and how blessed I
am to see it each week.
This woman fights and
struggles each week to
make it to the altar on
her own two legs to
receive our Lord. She
keeps her eye on the
Eucharist the whole
time. She puts her heart
and soul into that
struggle just to stand
before her savior and
receive Him. What an
incredible example of
love and respect for his
sacrifice!
Her struggle made me
aware of my
shortcomings. Do I work
that hard to get to our
Lord? Do I accept the
struggle each week to
give my all to make it to
Him? Do I keep my eye
on Christ during the
struggles of my week? It
was quite humbling.
The whole time her
husband is right there at
her side; holding her up

and assisting her to reach the
altar and the salvation of the
Eucharist. Are we that spouse?
Are we that support within our
families? Are we the force that
assists others in reaching Christ
in their daily lives?
You might be asking yourselves
what the heck this has to do with
family programs and with the
Knights of Columbus? Honestly,
I don't know. I could struggle for
a loop in but it would be
painfully transparent as me
reaching to tie it in. Every time I
thought about what to write this
month my thoughts always came
back to this observation and the
revelation it brought me. I
couldn't shake the feeling that
this must be shared especially
with our theme; Through Him,
With Him, In Him. So dear
brothers, I can only trust that
the Holy Spirit inspired me to
share this so that it touches one
of you and is the catalyst for
some good that God needs done.

Allowing Popups and Other
Browser Maintenance. When
you use the Internet, it is
important to remember that the
web browser you are using has
settings to allow or disallow popup
windows.
There are some sections of the
State Council website that use
popup windows, such as in
viewing programs, that will open a
new window to allow you to view
multiple programs at once. The
main “View Programs” window
will stay open and cause a new
browser window to open. If your
browser is not allowing popups,
then it will not work properly. To
enable this feature, go to your
browser settings and look for
popups. It will usually have a
checkmark stating “Block Popup
Windows” or something about
popup windows. Make sure that
this is unchecked or allowing
popups. If you do want to continue
blocking popup windows, then at
least allow popups from
www.kofcohio.org so that the
browser will view the popup
windows correctly.
Your browser also helps make
your Internet web faster by
keeping a copy of the web page
you visited on your computer for
faster retrieval. This is called a
“cache”. After a while these copies
can take up disk space and also
cause your browser to perform
incorrectly. It will sometimes use
the copy on disk and not see the
page on the Internet, or it will
take time to see going through all
of the files in the Cache to see if
the page you are visiting is
already on disk, and the browser
will seem slower as a result. So,
just like “Spring Cleaning”, you
can clear out the old history by
deleting the browsing history,
cookies, etc. in your browser. Go to
your browser settings and find the
Internet history or Internet
History (depending on your
browser), then find
the clear history or delete history
option. Here are windows from
Internet Explorer and FireFox.

any help, please feel free to email

FOOTBALL
SWEEPSTAKES
JULY KICKOFF until OCT.
27, 2015
Over the past thirteen years,
Ohio State councils have sold
over 165,000 tickets earning
councils over $500,000 in rebates
from the Football Sweepstakes
program. These are rebates that
councils may use to pay expenses
that they choose to
cover from their
proceeds.
Last year there was
a nearly 5%
increase in tickets
sales and a 15%
increase in rebates
to participating
councils. This is a
“Win-Win” situation
for councils – a win
- where $1000 is
awarded to weekly
winners and a win -
where councils will
receive rebate
proceeds. And you
get all of this - 10
weeks of excitement
for only $10.00 a
ticket.
Once again, the basic incentives
will remain the same as in
previous years, so over $125,000
in rebates can be earn, simply by
selling these football sweepstakes
tickets. The bottom line is that
the more tickets sold the larger
the rebate to your council.
EXTRA BONUS REBATE: A
bonus rebate of an extra $1.00
per ticket will be given to all
councils in the diocese that show
greatest increase in sales –
minimum of 10% increase over
2014. A bonus rebate of .50 for
the diocese that has the second
greatest increase in sales, and an
extra .25 for the diocese with the
third greatest increase in sales.
MINIMUM OF 10%
INCREASE !!
The 2015 sweepstakes involves
the last 10 weeks of games played
by the National Football League
this season – games that will be
played between Nov. 1 and Jan.
3. Donations are $10.00 per
ticket. There are 32 NFL teams
and each ticket has four different
teams each week No other ticket
has the same teams in any given
week.
A total of $1,000 in prizes is
awarded each week to ticket
holders with the four teams that
score the most – or the least –
number of points in that given
week of games. The scores from
the previous week’s games are
used for teams that are not
scheduled to play on any given
week. It makes no
difference whether teams win or
lose.
Total prizes awarded for the 10
weeks are $10,000.00. A winners’
list will be posted on
www.fundcrazr.com – Password
is going to your ticket number.
Tickets that are sold can be
turned in any time
before October 27,
which is the final
deadline. Sold
tickets, and money,
are to be sent to:
PSD Gary
Eckstein, 1498
River Trail Drive,
Grove City, Ohio
43123. You also
may contact me at
614-679-4238 for
additional tickets.
Winners will be
notified and paid
automatically each
week by the Ohio
State Council.
Remember:
participants must
print legibly their
name, address,
telephone number, and name and
number of the selling council, on
the ticket stub. The stub, and
$10, is turned in. The participant
keeps the rest of the ticket.

"My behavior was influenced by print,
mass-media and bad examples which
are followed by the majority of young
people without even thinking. And I did
the same. I was not worried.
"There were a lot of generous and
devoted people who surrounded me, but
I paid no attention to them because a
violent force blinded me and pushed me
toward a wrong way of life.
"When I was 20 years-old, I committed
a crime of passion. Now, that memory
represents something horrible for me.
Maria Goretti, now a Saint, was my
good Angel, sent to me through
Providence to guide and save me. I still
have impressed upon my heart her
words of rebuke and of pardon. She
prayed for me, she interceded for her
murderer. Thirty years of prison
followed.
"If I had been of age, I
would have spent all my
life in prison. I accepted
to be condemned
because it was my own
fault.
"Little Maria was really
my light, my
protectress; with her
help, I behaved well
during the 27 years of
prison and tried to live
honestly when I was
again accepted among
the members of society.
The Brothers of St.
Francis, Capuchins from
Marche, welcomed me
with angelic charity into
their monastery as a
brother, not as a
servant. I've been living
with their community
for 24 years, and now I
am serenely waiting to
witness the vision of
God, to hug my loved
ones again, and to be
next to my Guardian
Angel and her dear
mother, Assunta.
"I hope this letter that I
wrote can teach others
the happy lesson of
avoiding evil and of
always following the
right path, like little
children. I feel that
religion with its
precepts is not
something we can live
without, but rather it is
the real comfort, the
real strength in life and
the only safe way in
every circumstance,
even the most painful
ones of life."

I have chosen “Providing needs for Catholic Education” as the theme of the 2015 Matching Funds
Program. Your council’s contribution to the fund will assist in strengthening the Catholic Education efforts
in every Catholic school, in every religious program, and in every RCIA program of your diocese
The Matching Funds Program will run from September 1, 2015 through November 15, 2015. The Ohio
Charity Foundation, Inc. of the Ohio State Council is matching the first $25,000 donated to this year’s
program.
My goal for the 2015 Matching Funds Program is $70,000 combined with a100% participation of our Ohio
councils. I would hope that all councils across this great state will contribute as generously as they have in
past years.
There are several ways to fund your council’s donation to the Matching Funds Program:
Donate a portion of your Super Cash Bonanza Charity Ticket rebate
Host a council fundraising event with proceeds earmarked for the fund
Pass the hat for donations at council meetings
Ask your members to make a personal pledge to the Matching Funds Program.
Here are several ideas for a successful campaign within your council:
Appoint a chairman
Set a goal of at least 10% higher than last year
Contribute early in the campaign so that your donation will be matched
Send your council’s donation to me, Bob Byers, between September 1 and November 15, 2014.
The Matching Funds 2015 Contribution Form is printed on the back of this letter for your convenience.
All awards will be presented to the District Deputies at the January mid-year meeting for distribution to the
Councils. The following is a list of this year’s awards:
The highest donation overall by a council
The highest donation by a council in each diocese
The highest donation per member by a council in each diocese
The highest donation by a chapter, an assembly, or a squires circle will each receive an award
For those district deputies with 100% council participation in their districts.
Please pray for the success of this year’s Matching Funds campaign. In advance, may God bless you for your
work for religious education and for “Providing needs for Catholic Education”.
Thank you.
Fraternally,
Mark Siracusa
