Pastoral Sharings October 2019
24 Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he
did not prevail against Jacob, he struck him on the
hip socket; and Jacob’s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. 26 Then he said, “Let me go,
for the day is breaking.” But Jacob said, “I will not
let you go, unless you bless me.” 27 So he said to
him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.” 28 Then the man said, “You shall no longer be
called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with
God and with humans, and have prevailed.” Gen-
esis 32:24-28
I was never a wrestler [or, as my father-in-law pronounces it, “wrassler.”], except with
my older brother [5 years my senior and bigger]. My sons competed in wrestling, so, I understand and appreciate the finesse of the sport.
It would seem that the goal was always to use your opponent’s momentum against him, to turn his body against him. It's not always the biggest or strongest who wins,
depending on skill and perseverance. It is a way developing self-discipline; fasting/dieting, working out, and doing your part for the team.
Of course, not all wrestling happens on the cushion of a mat, as in the case of Jacob’s wrestling match. Some wrestling, striving, struggling, happen on the hard ground or
path along the journey of faith. I have been striving, struggling and wrestling with life situations over the past month.
Sometime, like Jacob, I have felt alone (have you ever felt like that in your struggles?). It appears to be dark as I look at myself in the situation. It is then that I need to re-
member Jacob’s story of wrestling and prevailing (or better said, persistence in the bat-tle). I am also reminded of Paul’s letter to the Romans, chapter 5, “3 Not only so, but we[a] also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces persever-
ance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spir-
it, who has been given to us.” Even though, you don’t need to suffer alone. There are those of us who hear the call to "carry each other's burdens, and in this way…fulfill the law of Christ." Of course, God’s ears are al-ways open. God’s bless you if you struggle…even if you don’t.
Here’s hoping you find time away from struggle and hectic new schedules this Fall 2019. Remember worship times change in October [SEE BELOW].

The Staff at GFW thanks you for your generous donations of school supplies this year. When I
brought them over, there were so many smiles, thank you’s, and giddiness that they would not have
to spend so much of their own money. There are many students whose families cannot afford al the
items necessary for a successful year, so these supplies are so welcome.
