ПРАЗНИК СВЯТОГО ОТЦЯ МИКОЛАЯ.

"Величаємо тебе, святителю Христовий, Ми-колаю, і почитаємо пам'ять твою, бо ти молиш за нас Христа Бога нашого." (Величання празника).

Серед різних празників на честь святих, що їх пам'ять відзначаємо в нашому церковному році, на окрему увагу заслуговує празник святого Миколая. Святого Отця Миколая з давніх-давен наш народ дуже поважав. Не було в нас ні однієї хати на Рід-них Землях, у якій би не було ікони святого Мико-лая. Наш народ почитає його, наче свого націона-льного святого. І хоч від його смерті минуло понад півтори тисячі літ, та все-таки він через свою доб-родійну любов і щедре милосердя вічно живе в се-рцях мільйонів людей. А його любов до ближнього кожного разу символічно відживає у дні його праз-ника по цілому світу, коли він тисячі й тисячі дітей обдаровує своїми дарунками. Таємниця його вели-кого й постійного культу серед усіх християнських народів полягає у тому, що він для всіх став симво-лом жертвенної любові ближнього та співчутливо-го милосердя. Про це свідчать історія його культу, наші богослужіння та ревне почитання його ікон.

1. Культ святого Миколая. Не багато знає-мо про життя святого Миколая. І навіть те, що зна-ємо, повите різними легендами. Знаємо, що святий Миколай довгі літа був єпископом у Мирах, прові-нція Лікія, у Малій Азії. Він брав участь у Першо-му Вселенському Соборі (325) у Нікеї. Помер бли-зько 345 року. Усе своє життя присвятив справі милосердя для душі й тіла. Тож ще за життя нази-вали його батьком сиріт, удів і бідних. Після смерті Господь Бог прославив його даром творення чудес, і тому він отримав імення великого чудотворця. Славні чуда були якраз головною причиною його швидкого й широкого культу.

THE FEAST OF ST. NICHOLAS «Wo praise you, O bishop of Christ, Nicholas, and we venerate your memory, for you pray for us to Christ our God.» (Hymn of Praise of the Feast)

Among the various feasts of the Saints whose memory we commemorate during the Church Year, St. Nicholas merits special consideration. From earliest times our holy Father, St. Nicholas, enjoyed great ven-eration and universal respect among our people. Not a single home in our native land was without an icon of St. Nicholas, and his icon is almost always seen among the icons on the iconastases of our churches. Our people venerate him as though he were a native Saint. Alt-hough over one thousand five hundred years have passed since his death, because of his works of charity and merciful generosity, he continues to live in the hearts of millions of people. Every year on his feast day, his love of neighbor continues to live symbolically throughout the world, as thousands upon thousands of children receive gifts in his name. The secret of his great and continuous cult among all the Christian na-tions lies in the fact that he has become a symbol of sacrificial love and compassionate mercy. This is at-tested by the history of his cult, our church services and the fervent veneration of his icons.

1. The Cult of his Person. We do not know very much about the life of St. Nicholas, and what we do know is somewhat embellished with various legends. We know for certain that St. Nicholas was a bishop for many years in Myra, a city in the province of Lycia, in Asia Minor; that he took part in the First Ecumenical Council in 325 at Nicea; and that he died around the year 345. His whole life was dedicated to works of mer-cy, both corporal and spiritual. Even during his lifetime he was called the father of orphans, widows, and the poor. After his death, the Lord glorified him with the gift of working miracles, for which he received the title “Great Wonder-worker”. His celebrated miracles were the chief reason for the rapid spread of his cult.

Культ святого Миколая починає поширюватися від часу, коли цісар Юстиніян І (527-565) збудував на його честь церкву в Царгороді. Єрусалимський Кано-нар з VII ст. 6 грудня каже: "Пам'ять Миколая, єпис-копа одного великого города". Цісар Мануїл Комнен (1143-1181) державним законом приписав святкувати Cвятого Миколая 6 грудня. З Візантії його культ по-ширюється по цілому світу. На Заході папа Миколай (858-867) — перший папа з цим іменем — близько 860 року збудував у Римі церкву Cвятого Миколая. До Німеччини його культ принесла візантійська княж-на Теофано, жінка цісаря Оттона II (973-983). Латин-ська Церква також святкує празник Миколая 6 грудня. У Франції і Німеччині є понад дві тисячі, а в Англії близько 400 церков, які названо в честь Миколая.

На наші українські землі культ святого Миколая приходить разом із християнською вірою. У другій половині XI сторіччя в Києві, на могилі Аскольда, було збудовано церкву Cвятого Миколая. У Києві під покровом Cвятого Миколая був жіночий монастир, який фондувала жінка князя Ізяслава Святославича († 1078). На рідних землях в нас було багато церков на честь Cвятого Миколая. До найдавніших з них нале-жить церква Cвятого Миколая у Львові, що походить з кінця XIII ст. Енциклопедія Українознавства про почитання святого Миколая в нашому народі каже: “У численних народних переказах Миколай боронить людей від стихійного лиха; найбільше він опікується тими, хто перебуває у плаванні, тому чорноморські рибалки, виходячи на промисел, брали з собою образ Миколая…” Пісні про святого Миколая належать до найдавніших зразків української поезії, серед них такі популярні, як “О хто, хто Миколая любить”.

2. Культ мощей святого Миколая. Дуже важли-вим чинником у поширенні культу святого Миколая, передусім в Італії і на Заході, а також і в нашого наро-ду, було перенесення мощей Cвятого Миколая у кінці XI ст. з Мир Лікійських до міста Барі в південній Іта-лії. У другій половині XI століття магометани зайняли Малу Азію, а при тому й місцевість, де спочивали мощі святого Миколая. Італійські купці з Барі вважа-ли Миколая за великого святого й опікуна мореплав-ців. Ведучи торгівлю з Малою Азією, вони вирішили викрасти мощі Cвятого Миколая і перевезти їх до Іта-лії. Викрадені мощі Cвятого Миколая прибули до Барі 9 травня 1087 року. Біля мощей відразу почали діяти-ся великі чуда, тому папа Урбан II в 1089 році устано-вив свято перенесення мощей святого Миколая на 9 травня. Три роки пізніше там побудовано величну церкву, у якій покладено його мощі. Місто Барі стало великим і славним місцем відпустів.

Після того, як мощі святого Миколая перенесли до Барі, і у нас на Русі-Україні установили празник перенесення мощей на 9 травня. Через це у нас є зим-ний і теплий Миколай. Запровадження цього празника в нас приписують переяславському митрополитові Єфремові. Йому також приписують опис події перене-сення мощей, укладення служби перенесення та ака-фісту на честь Cвятого Миколая.

The cult of St. Nicholas began to grow when the Emperor Justinian I (527-565) built a church in his honor in Constan-tinople. In the Jerusalem Canonarium of the seventh century, under the day of the 6th of December, it is stated: “Com-memoration of Nicholas, Bishop of a great city”. All the Greek menologies of the ninth century have his feast. Emper-or Manuel Comnen (1143-1181), prescribed by civil legisla-tion that the feast of St. Nicholas be celebrated on the 6th of December. From Byzantium his cult spread throughout the entire world. In the West, Pope Nicholas (858-867) — the first Pope bearing this name — erected a church in Rome in honor of St. Nicholas around the year 860. His cult was in-troduced into Germany by the Princess Theophano, wife of Emperor Otto П (973-983). The Latin Church also celebrates the feast of St. Nicholas on the 6th of December. In France and Germany over two thousand churches are dedicated to his name; an additional four hundred such churches are found in England.

The cult of St. Nicholas came to our native Ukraine along with the Christian faith. In the second half of the elev-enth century, a church was built in Kiev in honor of St. Nich-olas, over the grave of Askold. In Kiev there was a convent (monastery for women) under the patronage of St. Nicholas, founded by the wife of Prince Iziaslav Sviatoslavych (†1078). In our native land, there were numerous churches in honor of St. Nicholas. The Church of St. Nicholas in Lviv, which dates back to the thirteenth century, is one of the old-est. Our Ukrainian Encyclopedia says the following about the veneration of St. Nicholas among our people: “In a great number of oral traditions, Nicholas protects people from dis-asters caused by the elements: mostly he protects those who sail on the sea. Hence, the Black Sea fishermen, when going out to fish, take the icon of St. Nicholas with them. Songs about St. Nicholas are among the earliest examples of Ukrainian poetry and include such popular ones as "O Who-ever, whoever loves St Nicholas...”

2. Cult of the Relics of St. Nicholas. A very significant factor which contributed to the spread of the cult of St. Nich-olas, especially in Italy and in the West, as well as among our people, was the translation of the relics of St. Nicholas, from Myra in Lycia, Asia Minor, to the city of Bari in south-ern Italy toward the end of the eleventh century. In the sec-ond half of the eleventh century, the Moham-medans occu-pied Asia Minor and the city where the relics of St. Nicholas were preserved. The Italian merchants of Bari regarded St. Nicholas as a great Saint and protector of seamen. While trading with Asia Minor, they decided they would steal the relics of St. Nicholas and carry them off to Italy. The stolen relics of the Saint reached Bari on the 9th of May, 1087. As a result, great miracles began to take place immediately. For this reason, in 1089 Pope Urban II instituted the feast of the translation of the relics of St. Nicholas and ordered it to be celebrated on the 9th of May. Three years later a magnificent church was built there and his relics were deposited in it. The city of Bari became a great and famous place for pilgrimag-es.

Not long after the relics were transferred to Bari, the feast of the translation of the relics of St. Nicholas was also established on the 9th of May in Rus-Ukraine. Hence, our people speak of the cold and warm Nicholas. He is also said to have described the event of the translation of the relics and to have composed the service of the translation and an akathistos in honor of St. Nicholas.

December nights, when everything is covered with snow, kind St. Nicholas looks in the win-dows where good and polite boys and girls live. He comes quietly to those who were obedient and helped mom and dad throughout the year. But for Saint Nicholas to find out about this, he certainly needs you to write a letter to him by December 6, 2019.

In this letter, describe all your good deeds and actions, your wishes and dreams. And if you yourself cannot do this, then ask your father or mother to help you write this letter.

St. Nicholas’ mailbox is located in the church of St. Constantine.

WE INVITE ADULTS AND CHILDREN A master class in painting New Year’s toys is a pleasant and useful

vacation for the family. Few things strengthen the family as common interests and hobbies. For children, painting Christmas tree decorations will be the best beginning of a festive fairy tale, and it will help parents to plunge into childhood. Only your desire is needed to participate.

Participants will create New Year's miracles at a master class at the Church of St. Constantine under the guidance of an experienced master Tetyana Yurchyshyn. She will help to make the Christmas ball not only symbolic, but also truly beautiful.

The photos above are the works of our parishioner, Tatiana Yurchyshyn. Майстер-клас з розпису новорічної іграшки – це приємний та

корисний відпочинок для родини. Мало, що так зміцнює сім’ю, як спільні інтереси та захоплення. Для діточок розпис ялинкової прикраси стане кращим початком святкової казки, а батькам він допоможе поринути у дитинство. Потрібно лише бажання.

Створювати новорічні дива на майстер-класі при церкві Святого Константина учасники будуть під керівництвом досвідченої майстрині Тетяни Юрчишин. Вона допоможе зробити ялинкову кульку не лише символічною, а й по-справжньому гарною.
