Ⅰ. General Instruction for Students

1. Signing up and Class Attendance

Students who intend to start from the beginning level should go to class with the Notice for

Class Permit (上课通知单). New students (except those intending to start from the beginning level)

need to take a placement test before being assigned to certain classes. All current students need to

present their Report of Arrival (报到单) and Report of the Examination Scores of the Previous

Semester (成绩单) to select the courses. After course selection, a detail time-table (课表) will be

given to each student together with attendance permit form (听课证) (one for each selected course).

The latter must be presented to the responsible teacher at the beginning of the first class.

2. Class Hours and Credits

2.1 The college adopts a course credit system. At the end of each semester, all students who

finally pass the examination of a certain course will be granted credit points for that course.

2.2 The number of credit point is normally equal to the number of class hours per week.

2.3 All students in lower elementary level (初级 上) are required to study 20 hours of compulsory

courses per week. Those in upper elementary level (初级 下) are required to study 18 hours

of compulsory courses and 0-2 hours of elective course per week.

2.4 All students in the intermediate level are required to take 10 hours of compulsory courses per

week and an additional 2-10 hours of elective courses per week.

2.5 All students in the advanced level are required to take 6 hours of compulsory courses per week

and an additional 6-12 hours of elective courses per week.

2.6 All students in the advanced research level are required to take 4-6 hours of compulsory

courses per week.

2.7 Select course as students like (without certificate): Students are required to take 12-18 hours of

elective courses per week and academic credits of these courses are not take into account.

3. Class Changing for Compulsory Courses

3.1 Students may move into other classes in either higher or lower levels. However, moving into

other classes of the same level for whatever reason is not allowed.

3.2 If the students decide to move into classes of different level, this must be done within the

first two weeks after the class begins.

Page 25: 北京语言大学 汉语进修学院学生手册 - mq.edu.au · 完成一学期学习,考试通过,可获得该学期所学课程的学分。 2.学分以周课时计算,周课时数为该课程的学分数。

~ 24 ~

4. Class Selection, Changing and Dropping for Elective Courses

4.1 Course selection is organized only once every semester. The number of elective course hours

(credits) should be chosen according to the regulations stated in 2. Class Hours and Credits

(Table 1).

4.2. Students in all levels (elementary, intermediate and advanced) may take any of the elective

courses available in our college. Courses in which credit points have been earned can be

retaken but the credit points cannot be relearned.

4.3 Students may change or drop elective courses they have already chosen within the first two

weeks after the course begins. In order to do so, the students must request the attendance

permit form (which was given to the teacher on the first day of that course) back from the

teacher. With the attendance permit form and unmarked textbooks, the courses can be

changed or dropped at Course Management Office (room 1018, Teaching Building 1). Those

who do not change or drop the courses within the first two weeks are considered to have

formally taken the courses.

4.4 An elective course will be available only if there are at least 15 students.

5. Attendance

5.1 For compulsory courses, students’ attendance will be recorded by the teacher from the first

day of the courses.

5.2 Students who are late for 15 minutes or more will be marked as being absent for a full class

hour. Being late for less than 15 minutes for 3 times will be marked as being absent for a full

class hour.

5.3 In each semester, if the number of total absent hours in compulsory courses (including sick

and business leaves) reaches those listed in the following table, the student will be

automatically disqualified for the final examination of that subject.

Table 2

Class hours

per week 10 6 4 2

Total absent

class hours 54 33 22 11

6. Examination and Scoring

6.1 The total score of each examination is 100. A minimum of 60 is required to pass the

examination.

6.2 For compulsory courses in elementary level, the final examination scores account for 40%, the

mid-term examination account for 30% and the general performance 30% of the total, while

in intermediate and advanced levels, the final examination scores account for 60% and the

general performance 40% of the total.

6.3 For elective courses in the elementary level, the final examination scores account for 60%

while the general performance account for 40% of the total. For elective courses in

intermediate and advanced levels, the final examination scores account for 60% and the

general performance 40% of the total.

6.4 Students who fail to achieve passing scores may take a make-up examination. But this is not

applicable to those who are disqualified for the final examination.

6.5 Students who fail to attend the examination without a good reason are also ineligible to take

the make-up exam. There will be no score for that examination.

7. Skipping to a Higher Level

During the enrollment period, before the beginning of each new semester, the current students

can apply for class skipping to a higher level at the Course Management Office (Room 921,

Teaching Building 1).

8. Certificates

Notes: 1. If the credits earned during the semester are not enough to be eligible to earn a

certificate, students can make up for the deficit from higher grade of the same

semester, however, students cannot use the lower grade of the same semester to

compensate for the higher courses, and students cannot use the credits or elective

courses to compensate for the credits of compulsory courses.

2. Certificate is unavailable for students who select course as they like in the semester

they learned.

9. College Certificate Program

9.1 Students in College Certificate Program who have finished 2 academic years and have

acquired 80 credits, or have gotten credits certification(学分认定), finished one and a half

academic years and have acquired 60 credits, will be granted a College Certificate for

Chinese Language. Those whose credits don't reach the required standard, but have

accumulated enough credits as required by the College, are still qualified to get the

Certificate for Chinese Training.

9.2 During the elementary Chinese study period, students are required to take 40 credits.

However, those who have obtained at least 36 credits are still eligible to proceed, provided

that all the deficient credits are fully made up during the Chinese specialty study period.

9.3 During the Chinese specialty study period, students are required to take 36 credits (at least 10

credits of which are for compulsory courses per semester). In addition, the students are also

required to attend the field study and write a report upon the completion (4 credits). However,

those who can’t attend the filed study under some special circumstances are required to take
