PASTOR’S MESSAGE 3

This Sunday we begin our Holy Season of Advent. The word Advent is from the Latin adventus for "coming" and is associated with the four weeks of preparation for Christmas. Advent always contains four Sundays, beginning on the Sunday nearest the feast of St. Andrew the Apostle, (November 30) and continuing until December 24. It blends together a penitential spirit, very simi-lar to Lent, a liturgical theme of preparation for the Second and Final Coming of the Lord, called the Parousia, and a joyful theme of getting ready for the Bethlehem event. Since the 900s Advent has been considered the beginning of the Church year. This does not mean that Advent is the most important time of the year. Easter has always had this honor. The traditional color of Advent is purple or violet which symbolizes the penitential spirit. Religious traditions associated with Advent express all these themes. When we talk about the second coming of Jesus, we also have to talk about waiting, waiting is something that we don’t like, especially in a hustle society and the latest technology where everything has to be fast, keep going please, that is why we are impatience with children and the elderly because sometime they are slow in doing things, however we have to slow down, and think about where I am going, what I am doing. Many times we waste our energy in trifle things, getting on time for the gymn, a restaurant, a meeting, football game, and when we go to Church, we want the Mass to finish as early as possible, with a shorter homily, no hymns, no extra prayers and get out before Mass ends. That is not how we must celebrate Advent. We must reflect how I will meet the Lord Jesus when he comes. Will He find us watchful in prayer? Will He sit down and wait on us because we have been faithful to Him? The message of Advent also tells us not to be afraid, because our liberation is near. Our liberation or freedom is near us all the time, when we go to the sacrament of confession and receive forgiveness from the priest in the name of Jesus. When we get out of our comfort zone and set on volunteer work in order to serve others, in visiting a sick person or one in prison. Doing this is what brings us peace and joy in our soul. We don’t have to mix up the real meaning of Advent as a time of preparing for Christmas shopping, no, Advent is more than that. Awaiting for the Lord who comes to renews us when we approach Him. May our Blessed Mother help us to find time during this season of Advent so that we may prepare our heart as she did to receive Jesus with a clean and pure heart. From the Catechism of the Catholic Church: #522 The coming of God's Son to earth is an event of such immensity that God willed to prepare for it over centuries. He makes everything converge on Christ: all the rituals and sacrifices, figures and symbols of the "First Covenant". He announces Him through the mouths of the prophets who succeeded one another in Israel. Moreover, He awakens in the hearts of the pagans, a dim expectation of this coming. #523 St. John the Baptist is the Lord's immediate precursor or forerunner, sent to prepare His way. "Prophet of the Most High", John surpasses all the prophets, of whom he is the last. He inaugurates the Gospel, already from His mother's womb welcomes the coming of Christ, and rejoices in being "the friend of the bridegroom", whom He points out as "the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world". Going before Jesus "in the spirit and power of Elijah", John bears witness to Christ in his preaching, by his Baptism of conversion, and through his martyrdom. 524 When the Church celebrates the liturgy of Advent each year, she makes present this ancient expectancy of the Messiah, for by sharing in the long preparation for the Savior's first coming, the faithful renew their ardent desire for his second coming. By celebrating the precursor's birth and martyrdom, the Church unites herself to His desire: "He must increase, but I must decrease." Father Mariano Varela, IVE

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
