The month of February sees a modern day exodus of the rectory…this is the time of the year for each of the 4 priests to make their plans for winter time away…we try to spread the Good News of our lives into different corners of the Western Hemisphere…Fr. Ray in the Caribbean, Msgr. Gerry and Fr. Al out West to two different states for skiing and I will head off tomorrow for 2 weeks in Florida…now you know why I was so happy last weekend in an-nouncing that the pic line for the IV was out of my arm…no antibiotics to carry, no pic line to clean and use…freedom...I am looking forward to this time away and hope that the warmer clime of Florida will help and move for-ward the healing process. With the absence of our priests, our weekday Mass schedule has to be changed for the next two weeks…we will have a Communion Service led by Deacon John this coming Tuesday at 11 am…and only one weekday Mass, Monday through Friday this week and next at 11 am…and no 9 am Mass this Saturday…we will welcome Fr. Jim Fisher at the 9 am Mass on Sunday, the 15th, and Fr. John Mulligan at the 11 am Mass that same day…Fr. Ray will be here alone that weekend so be gentle with him…Fr. Jim is from McQuaid and Fr. John is one of the Vicar Generals of the Diocese…on Feb 23, we will re-turn to our usual schedule and prepare ourselves for the season of Lent, be-ginning Feb. 25. This coming week, our Catholic School will begin the registration process for the 2009 - 10 school year…we look forward to welcoming several new fami-lies from St. Louis parish to our school…parents are reminded that before the registration process is complete, you have to have your Parish Commitment form signed…I invited many people who needed this to be done to make an appointment with me before I went on vacation, but not too many did so…you will have to wait now until my return and I will gladly meet with you by March 5…we have several openings in the pre-school program and some in the upper grades…if you are interested in a Catholic school education for your child, pre-K to grade 6, you should call Ms Kathleen Carroll at St. Louis or Mr. Tim Leahy at Siena Academy on East Ave. for grades 7 - 8…our schools

YOU’RE INVITED

are a wonderful choice that integrates faith into the learning of the children. It is not too soon to begin to talk about what I think will be one of the best Parish Missions that the three parishes of Pittsford-Mendon have offered…Fr. Richard Fragomini from Chicago will be with us and will offer some uplifting and challenging talks about life in the troubled times in which we live…Fr. Richard is an engaging speaker and has a won-derful knack to speak to the hearts of people…plan now to participate in this Mission, March 2 to 4...Monday evening’s session will be here; Tuesday will be at Transfiguration; Wednesday will be at St. Catherine’s…each at 7 pm…Fr. Rich-ard will be with us for the 11am Mass on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday also…we invite you to join him for a light lunch following Mass and then he will offer some thoughts…this luncheon format was quite popular last year and so we have planned it again this year. We continue to receive affirming comments from a wide range of people about the 2 weekends in which we spoke about the Teaching Mass...this was a very worthwhile experience and we will try to incorporate some of the ideas on an on-going basis. Have a good week…stay well… Peace!

“Project Mark”

“Project Mark” is part of the diocesan-wide “Spirit Alive” effort studying the Gospel of Mark this new year.

Chapter of Mark to read: 10. Reflection Questions:

[Mk 10: 1 - 11] What do you like best and least about weddings? How were the Pharisees trying to test Jesus by their question? How can you apply the principles of marriage underlined here? Do you think Jesus would respond the same way to someone in a troubled marriage who is sincerely asking the question in verse 2?

[Mk 10: 46 - 30] How can respond when a beggar approaches you on the street? What is significant about the way Bartimaeus ad-dresses Jesus? About the way the beggar is treated by the crowd?

If Jesus asked you, “What do you want me to do for you?”

ADJUSTED MASS SCHEDULE

With our priests taking some time away dur-ing February, we will need to adjust our week-day Mass schedule. We will have only one Mass on February 9 to 13 ; no 9:00 am Mass on February 14; only one Mass on February 16 to 20. We will resume our regular schedule on Feb. 21 and the follow-ing week. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you in advance for your understanding.

Thoughts on Giving

5th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed…He told them, “Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.” - Mark 1:35, 38 Through today’s Gospel reading we see a perfect example of stewardship. Jesus gives His time to doing all that God wishes - healing the sick and preaching. Yet Jesus also makes time to be alone in prayer. It is only through prayer, through spend-ing time with God, that any of us can find the strength to do all that God wishes us to do. Be sure to find time this week to be with God.

Next Week’s Tithing is for

Father Protus

Next week’s tithing will support the ministry of Fr. Protus Hamisi – a Kenyan priest who lived in residence at St. Louis Parish in the late 1990s. Since returning home, Fr. Protus has been involved in the creation of an elementary school (supported through the outreach efforts of St. Louis School), a home for orphaned and disabled children (funded through the generosity of several Rochester-area donors), and is now working to build a church to house his growing congrega-tion. As always, your support and prayers are appreciated.

Parish Support

As part of our registration process to be-come members of St. Louis Church, we ask you to make a commitment to our common life. We use the Stewardship for-mat for this commitment. We ask everyone to consider your abilities and to pledge your Time, Talent and Treasure to our community. We realize that we all do not have equal amounts of these categories, but we all can give some-thing in each. Your gift, large or small, expresses your giving back to the Lord for the blessings that God has graced you with. Give back to God from the top of your life and not from the bottom; give your first fruits as Abel did.

WE GROW IN FAITH: FAITH FORMATION AND YOUTH MINISTRY

First Sunday ... …Skate!!

Hey all. Today is February 8 and we are celebrating our First Sunday pro-gram (for first time readers, don’t worry, the Super Bowl itself doesn’t take precedence over our programs.. it’s the chili...just kidding). So, the SUNDAY 5 pm Mass is going to be a great lead in to a night of fun. We are having our teen oriented Mass, with great singing and participation, and then we get FED. After food, we truck on over to Manhattan Square for Skating. We have rented it just for you – our teens and middle school students. No one else. Our treat to you – thanks for all your involvement. Permission forms at the back of church if you need them – friends invited too! And, without question, YOU HAVE TO attend. The reason is next Sunday is the start of break week so there is no formal youth group. We’ll start up again on Sunday the 22 (history ques-tion – who’s official birthday is that?). Over break though, I’m still looking for folks who want to help at the Shel-ter Home for Volunteers of America. They are in constant need. Last year we were an instrumental part of the creation of this home. Our teens/youth group adopted a room and make it beautiful. Today, our room is one of the favorites of residents and I can’t tell you how much this means to a homeless family needing some help. Please, Please, call me, email, send me a text, but please say you can help. I’m thinking we’ll do a later afternoon and then even maybe we can skate af-ter that too!!! Enjoy!! Greg Farrell, Youth Coordinator

gfarrell@stlouischurch.

SCHIP

Jesus heals Peter’s mother-in-law and many others possessed and sick in today’s Gospel. As his fol-lowers we can celebrate the “good news” of heal-ing today as our Congress has voted for an expan-sion of health care insurance for children (SCHIP) in the United States.

We continue to urge our congress that:

As the discussion of health care continues, we request that the follow-ing core values be the foundation of the new legislation and policies: respect for the dignity of each person, special care for the poor and vul-nerable, consideration of the common good, justice, and prudent stew-ardship of resources. Health care begins with good prenatal care for mothers and chil-dren and we urge that preventive, acute, long-term, and palliative care services be made available to all people.

First Communion Update

All registered families for the First Com-munion preparation program should have received a letter in the mail with details about the program and a sign-up form. This sign-up form is due by Friday, Feb. 13. If you have not already turned this form in please do so ASAP.

If you have not sent in a copy of your child’s baptismal certificate, you need to do this also before your child can begin the program. Our program will begin with a kick-off for parents only on either Tuesday February 24 OR Thursday February 26 from 7:00 to 8:00 pm in the Parish Meeting Hall. If you have any questions please contact Sue Payne at 586-5675 or email [email protected]

PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS

Vocations

5th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Unlike Job, who described his life on earth a “drudgery” and felt he would “not see happiness again,” we have Jesus Christ who makes our true happiness possible. How do you share Jesus – and his promise of eter-nal joy – with others? Might God be calling you to do that by way of a vocation in the Church? Have you ever considered religious life, ordained priesthood, or lay ecclesial ministry? Would you like to know more?

Please pray about it and, if you’d like to speak with someone, contact the Office of Vocation Awareness @ 461-2890.

Building Peace

with Justice

In our Sunday readings, Job, Paul, Peter’s mother-in-law, and Jesus teach us the power of merely at-tending to what is at hand, to what we can do to improve the health of our communities. Grand ges-ture is set aside in favor of real service. 25 years ago the U.S. Catholic Bishop’s document, The Challenge of Peace: God’s Promise and Our Re-sponse, proclaimed the same wisdom:

Let us have the courage to believe in the bright fu-ture and in a God who wills it for us - not a perfect world, but a better one. The perfect world, we Christians believe, is beyond the horizon, in an endless eternity where God will be all in all. But a better world is here for human hands and hearts and minds to make. (#337)

Reflection: We take pride in our sense of perfec-tion. Can we also take pride in doing something that is imperfect but good?

Contribution Letters Mailed

Two weeks ago, we sent out to all those who contributed through the envelope system their record of contributions for the calendar year of 2008. Please review your statement, as we are still a human institution and mistakes are made. We already have caught some errors in that those who use elec-tronic transfer were not credited with their October contribu-tion. (Corrected statements are being mailed to these folks.). Our intention in mailing this letter is to conform with the IRS requirement, but also to provide you with a statement of your monetary contributions to the parish. If you detect any error, please call us at the Ministry Center (586-5675) so we can adjust our records. And…Thank you!!! For what you share with our community here.

TITHING REQUESTS

Ever wonder how a cause becomes the tithing designation for each week? Our Tithing Com-mittee meets each quarter to review the various causes that are submitted by parishioners or from those that directly contact us. The committee assigns one or more causes to a particular weekend and writes a brief summary that appears in the bulletin of the purpose of the group or how they will use the tithe.

If you would like to submit a cause for consideration, please send it: c/o the Tithing Committee at the Ministry Center.

You should give a brief description of the organization, their re-sources, a possible financial statement, and how they will use the tithe. A personal statement of why you believe this cause is a wor-thy one is helpful. Include your name and phone number so we can contact you if there are any questions.

Saint’s Place Annual Sale

Saint’s Place is getting organized for its Annual Sale to be held April 22, 23 and 24. We begin our plan-ning early so that we are well-organized and can make the shopper’s experience pleasurable. Proceeds from the sale will be used to offset the cost of running the ministry, and purchasing needed items for the refugees (Especially beds, pillows, new underwear, cleaning supplies, etc.). We are now looking for good quality (almost new) items for the sale. Items you have sitting in your china cabinet that you really never use or the lovely set of dishes that were left to you by a dear aunt but you don’t really have a need for; lamps, painting, decorative items that are lovely but just don’t fit your new décor – please consider donating them to us. Tax receipts are available! Last year we exceeded our goal thanks to your generosity. Your donations make the sale a great shopping experience for so many parishioners and shoppers throughout our county. Our Annual Sale is becoming renowned in the area because of the out-standing selection of goods and the wonderful way all the items are displayed. We need your help to volunteer your time, talents or treasures. Please call Michele at 385-6860 to vol-unteer or obtain additional information. We need YOU to help us make this sale a success.

ITEMS THAT WE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTING FOR THE SALE: Holiday Decorations, exercise equipment, typewriters, word processors, luggage, clothing, medical supplies, building supplies and heavy duty tools. If you have any questions about items please call 385-6860.

“I speak to you from my heart of our obligation to study the truth in deep prayer and meditation, and bear witness to the light that comes from the All-Holy God into this world of darkness where He is not known and not remembered. The world we live in has become an awful void, a desecrated sanctuary, reflecting outwardly the emptiness and blindness of the hearts of men who have gone crazy with their love for money and power and with pride in their technology.”

PARISH & COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS

Billy Graham (1918- ). The most visible religious leader to generations of twentieth-century Americans, Billy Graham served for decades as a globe-trotting evangelist, preaching to more people than anyone else in| history. Raised a Southern Presbyterian in Charlotte, North Carolina, he was converted during a revival in his hometown in 1934 and be-gan his career as an evangelist at Youth for Christ revivals in 1945. Although Graham got off on the wrong foot with President Harry Truman, who judged him a "counterfeit," he later served as an unofficial American Protestant pope, consulting and praying with Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Nixon, Johnson, Reagan, Bush, and Clinton. President George W Bush has credited Graham with helping to crack his drinking habit and to bring him to Jesus. Although of-ten labeled a fundamentalist, Graham is actually an evangelical who has repeatedly drawn fire from fundamentalists for his policy of involving in his revivals (which he calls "crusades") all the Christian denominations in a given city, including liberal Protestant groups. Graham ceded many of the activities of his Billy Graham Evangelical Association to his son Franklin Graham in 2000.

This feature continues articles from Stephen Prothero’s Book Religious Literacy. His thesis is that we all need to become more literate in matters of religion.
